This paper deals with the numerical study for excavation crossing the fault zone and the change of support pattern in field. The numerical analyses by FLAC program were performed to evaluate the suitable support pattern influenced by the width of Fault Zone, considering rock mass condition(RMR classification). Based on the results, it is found that partial reinforcement or degrading support pattern is suitable, when the width of Fault is under 3m. But when the width of Fault is more than 6m(0.5D), extra support pattern for fault zone is acceptable. At field, this result is generally used as a guide in the construction of roadway tunnel, but it is also possible to vary this assessment along the condition of fault.

In this study, a case study was introduced for the design of a twin tunnel along high speed national highway Route 12 from Damyang to Sungsan. It was related to determine the optimal tunnel support pattern and excavation method based on a risk analysis in order to incorporate the uncertainty of ground properties. To this end, three alternatives with different amounts of support and excavation method were selected and risk analysis was performed by applying Monte Carlo simulation technique, respectively. Stability of the tunnel was quantified by the factor of safety. To improve the result, the 729 cases of the combination of ground properties (deformation modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle) satisfying a Gaussian distribution were generated and applied. Also, stability of the tunnel was confirmed by analyzing the distribution of both displacement and shotcrete bending stress.

Recently, highway tunnel construction has rapidly been increased due to the limited ground usage and geographical characteristic in Korea, i.e. Korea consists of 70% mountains. In this paper, it was analyzed tunnel collapse patterns in the weathered rockmass. Recent tunnel collapse pattern is quite different from that of past ten years. Tunnels in past years have been collapsed at shallow valley area because of shear strength decrease after heavy rain. Tunnels, which have been constructed recently, were collapsed at even the deeper ground position after primary support. Also in the case that proper reinforcement was not applied, it caused excessive crack at shotcrete and local collapse near tunnel face. In this paper, it was analysed the cause of the recent tunnel collapses and proper reinforcement for the collapsed tunnels.

When the tunnel is designed, the ground is classified into several grades and the corresponding support system is applied according to the support pattern table. However, a simple pattern application based on rock grade does not take into account the longitudinal stress transitions occurring at rock grade boundaries. In this study, three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed to estimate the stress change in the longitudinal rock grade change of NATM tunnel, and the influence zone of load transfer was investigated using the influence line and trend line. As a result, the downward change of rock grade in the direction of tunnel excavation occurs in the range of 0.35~0.7D from low-strength rock to high-strength rock around the grade change boundary. It is necessary to apply a downward pattern of about 1.0D to the safety direction in consideration of the influence range of 0.35D to 0.7D.
The only three elements such as RQD, N -value and Es were used as a quantitative standard for the design of supporr pattern determidetion on subway line 8th in Seoul. Because the support pattern that was obtained by these elements could not he determined on the basis of the quantitative of geology and the orientations and properties of discontinuity planes, there have been some problems in determining the economic support pattern and tunnel stability. Therefore, in an attempt to determine the stable and economic support pattern with more quantitative elements, more flerrible rock mass classification with geologic conditions was performed by using RMR at 1745 sections and Q-system at 374 sections within Seongnam block on subway line 8th. Then, rusults by these two methods were compared with standard support pattern of the subway line 8th. Moreover, relationships between geology, geologic structures and topography to rock mass grades were studied. According to the rusult of this study, it is judged that the standard support pattern designed with PD-4 or PS - 4 should have been subdivided into 4~6 support patterns. Some sections where geologic structures such as faults and joints are developed tend to have rock mass grades. And they also have low rock mass grades near valley. On thr other hand, they show intermediate grades at piedmont area and the greatest ones at high mountains.
The selection of the support system is an important design parameter in design and construction of the tunnel using the new Australian tunnel method. It is a common practice to select the support based on the rock mass grade, in which the rock mass is classified into five rock groups. The method is applicable if the characteristics of the rock mass are uniform in the direction of tunnel excavation. However, such case is seldom encountered in practice and not applicable when the properties vary along the longitudinal direction. This study performs comprehensive three dimensional finite difference analyses to investigate the ground deformation pattern for cases in which the rock mass properties change in the direction of the tunnel axis. The numerically calculated displacements at the tunnel crown show that the displacement is highly dependent on the stiffness contrast of the rock masses. The results strongly indicate the need to select the support type $0.5{\sim}1.0D$ before the rock mass boundary. The paper proposes a new guideline for selecting the support type based the results of the analyses.

In tunnel construction, the information on the rock quality and the location of fault or fracture are crucial for economical design of support pattern and for safe construction of the tunnel. The grade of rock is commonly estimated through the observation with the naked eye of recovered cores in drilling or from physical parameters obtained by their laboratory test. Since drilling cost is quite expensive and terrains of planned sites for tunnel construction are rough in many cases, however, only limited information could be provided by core drilling Electrical resistivity and EM surveys may be a clue to get over this difficulty. Thus we have investigated electrical resistivity and EM field data providing regional Information of the rock Quality and delineating fault and fracture over a rough terrain. In this paper, we present some case histories using electrical resistivity and EM survey for the site investigation of tunnel construction. Through electrical resistivity and EM survey, the range and depth of coal seam was clearly estimated, cavities were detected in limestone area, and weak zones such as joint, fault and fracture have been delineated.
This study has analysed overbreaks, shotcrete rebound and the ratio between the actual quantity of shotcrete sprayed compared to designed quantity measured during a NATM tunnel construction. Based on the measurements of size of the excavated tunnel faces, an average overbreak was about 28.5 cm, which is about 260% of allowable overbreak. The measured shotcrete rebound was about 7.2% in average which is about half the allowable rebound(15%). In addition, due to overbreaks and rebound the actual quantity of shotcrete used in the tunnelling work was about 116.5 % of the designed value. It has been found from the field measurements that the quantity of shotcrete showed some relation with rock mass rating(RMR) and the standard guideline of tunnel supports, but the size of overbreak showed less correlation with RMR and the standard guideline of tunnel supports. Hence, the current tunnel design specifications stating the size of overbreak based entirely on the standard guideline for tunnel supports should perhaps be reestablished. The insight into the design guideline regarding overbreak and actual quantity of shotcrete will be reported and discussed.
It is the unavoidable problem that the RMR rock classification method has the uncertainty resulted from uncertain definition of measured value in RMR grade table, hence in this paper, the estimation of probability density function$(p{\cdot}d{\cdot}f)$ graph with the evaluation of continuos RMR and the Monte Carlo Simulation and statistic reasoning were carried out to evaluate the uncertainty quantitatively. Also, the modified RMR rock classification table was presented in order to apply the uncertainty of RMR to the practice, and then the design process of standard support pattern and the tunnel support material was proposed.

A large sectional tunnelling method using Shield TBM is expected to be popular as domestic demand of long tunnel gets growing. Although a shield tunnelling method has been recognized as prominent method in consideration of stability and applicability in shallow and poor ground, the cases of accident and constructional trouble have been often happened due to unexpected poor ground condition, or selection and use of improper shield machine. Especially, troubling cases at tunnel face are frequently occurred, so supporting pressure control of tunnel face would be the main issue for securing safer and more efficient tunnel excavation using Shield TBM. In this point, we carried out the numerical feed-back analysis to compare the ground deformation pattern with theoretical result at tunnel face.
