In this paper, the interaction between two neighboring tunnel has been investigated using PFC2D. For this purpose, firstly calibration of PFC was performed using Brazilian experimental test. Secondly, various configuration of two neighboring tunnel was prepared and tested by biaxial test. The maximum and minimum principle stresses were 0.2 and 30 MPa respectively. The modeling results show that in most cases, the tensile cracks are dominant mode of cracks that occurred in the model. With increasing the diameter of internal circle, number of cracks decreases in rock pillar also number of total cracks decreases in the model. The rock pillar was heavily broken when its width was too small. In fixed quarter size of tunnel, the crack initiation stress decreases with increasing the central tunnel diameter. In fixed central tunnel size, the crack initiation stress decreases with increasing the quarter size of tunnel.
The "Ondong tunnel" is not used now where is one of the tunnels in the Janghang line which is from Cheonan to Iksan. The length of the tunnel is 214 m. The location of the fire source is center of the tunnel and the pool fire with heptane is for the fire source. Tests are carried out for the various fire sizes, the height and obstructed/open condition of the fire source. Temperature on the top of the tunnel is measured. Even if the fire size is same, the maximum temperature on the ceiling of the tunnel for the elevated fire source is very larger than the maximum for the ground fire source. As the fire size is lager the maximum temperature on the ceiling is higher. These test results can be very useful for design and guidelines of fire detectors in tunnels.

In this paper, the full-size structural performance test for a lightweight soundproof tunnel composed of partitioned pipe truss members is carried out to investigate the structural performance. In addition, a nonlinear structural analysis of the same finite element model as the full-size testing model is performed to compare the test result. The test and analysis results showed that the lightweight soundproof tunnel ensures the structural safety against wind loads, snow loads and load combinations. As a result, the full-size test and analysis results meet all the design load conditions, hence the proposed lightweight soundproof tunnel is ready for the field application.
It is important to study the problem of durability for tunnel structures. As a main influence on the durability of tunnel structures, carbonation-induced corrosion is studied. For the complicated environment of tunnel structures, based on the data samples from real engineering examples, the intelligent method (genetic programming) is used to construct the service life prediction model of tunnel structures. Based on the model, the prediction of service life for tunnel structures in carbonation environments is studied. Using the data samples from some tunnel engineering examples in China under carbonation environment, the proposed method is verified. In addition, the performance of the proposed prediction model is compared with that of the artificial neural network method. Finally, the effect of two main controlling parameters, the population size and sample size, on the performance of the prediction model by genetic programming is analyzed in detail.
In the present study, naturally generated bubbles were investigated to be sure if they could be adopted as the tracer for PIV techniques. The bubble can be grown from the nuclei melted in the water of tunnel and the size of bubbles is changed through the variation of tunnel pressure. Since the trace ability and appropriate size of tracer are so important for PIV techniques, the characteristics of bubbles as tracer are revealed in terms of trace ability and bubble size with the variation of flow speed and tunnel pressure in this study. In addition, PIV measurements of (low behind a rotating propeller are conducted to confirm the trace ability of bubbles even in a highly vortical flow.
Background: The objectives of this study were to establish a swimming capability model for largemouth bass using the FishXing (version 3) program, and to determine the swimming speed and feasibility of fish passage through a waterway tunnel. This modeling aimed to replicate the waterway tunnel connecting the Andong and Imha Reservoirs in South Korea, where there is a concern that largemouth bass may be able to pass through this structure. As largemouth bass are considered an invasive species, this spread could have repercussions for the local environment. Results: Flow regime of water through the waterway tunnel was calculated via the simulation of waterway tunnel operation, and the capability of largemouth bass to pass through the waterway tunnel was then estimated. The swimming speed and distance of the largemouth bass had a positive linear function with total length and negative linear function with the flow rate of the waterway tunnel. The passing rate of small-size largemouth bass (10-30 cm) was 0%at a flow of $10m^3/s$ due to rapid exhaustion from prolonged upstream swimming through the long (1.952 km) waterway tunnel. Conclusions: The results of FishXing showed that the potential passing rate of large size largemouth bass (>40 cm) through the waterway tunnel was greater than 10%; however, the passage of largemouth bass was not possible because of the mesh size ($3.4{\times}6.0cm$) of the pre-screening structures at the entrance of the waterway tunnel. Overall, this study suggests that the spread of largemouth bass population in the Imha Reservoir through the waterway tunnel is most likely impossible.
If an underground research facility for the validation of disposal concept is constructed in KAERI, it is expected to have a thick weathered zone and varying surface topology. In this study, the influence of different geological conditions, tunnel slope, tunnel size, and sequential excavation is investigated by 3D mechanical analysis using FLAC3D. Around the tunnel, it is not expected to develop any plastic zone and the maximum stress might be as high as 5 ㎫. The maximum compressive stress will be developed at about 20 m to e dead end of the tunnel. There is no difference on stress and displacement distributions between the cases with and without sequential excavation. It is expected to have stress release in the roof and floor after the excavation of the tunnel. There is no significant influence of weathered zone size, tunnel size, and tunnel slope on the stress and displacement distributions. The modeling for the intersection shows the minimum factor of safety is above 3, when the in situ stress ratio K is 3. From the study, it was possible to demonstrate that the small scale disposal research tunnel in KAERI will be mechanically stable.

The objective of the present study is to develop a model to predict heat and gas flow movement by fire in a tunnel. The model includes component models such as turbulence model, combustion model, fire model, jet fan model, etc. It has been validated using the data from Memorial Tunnel Fire Ventilation Test Program. The predictions are in good quantitative agreement with the experimental data in the far-field region of the tunnel. It should be further investigated to develop models for radiation between surfaces, for composite boundary conditions for conduction and convection, and for vigorous turbulent mixing in a tunnel especially for a large size of fire.
Recently, fast-growing up railway transportations. Because, regional traffic congestion problem solving and a period of rapid expansion to meet the demand of industries. In addition the government also suggest to new paradigm for the future 'Low Carbon, Green Growth' is presented as a new national vision. To meet the social needs and the time demands, Last of the railway increase very long tunnels and huge deep tunnels. Especially this trend accelerated high speed up in the tunnel, the revision of design criteria and research challenges are being actively improved. Mainly in the tunnel cross-section was under the control of the vehicle train speed 150km/hr by the construction of the vehicle cross-section of the tunnel. More than 200km/hr rail tunnel depending on the vehicle's speed caused the tunnel to the pressure fluctuations will be governed by the aerodynamic changes. Considering the economy to ensure the optimum cross-section of the railway tunnel to the description scheme is selected cross-section of the railway tunnel to determine the size domestic or international railway tunnel for the elements((based on fast Algorithm design criteria, the center line spacing, streetcar line, cross-sectional shape, sectoral issues, such as interface and aerodynamics) based on design practices and to review results. In this study, to propose guidelines depending on the size of a railway tunnel cross section for the size of the determining reasonable factors when designing the railway tunnel and cost-effective standards guidelines.
Numerical analysis of wind turbine scale effect was performed by using commercial CFD code, Fluent. For the numerical analysis of wind turbine, the three dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with various turbulence models was tested. As a turbulence mode, the realizable k-e turbulence model was selected for the simulation of wind turbines. To validate the present method, performance of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI wind turbine model was analyzed and compared with its wind tunnel test and blind test data. Using the present method, numerical simulations for various size of wind tunnel models were carried out and characteristics were analyzed in detail. For wind tunnel test model, the size of nacelle may not be scaled down precisely because of available motor. The effect of nacelle size was also computed and analyzed though CFD simulation. The present results showed the good correlations in pre-stall region but much to be improved in post-stall region. In 2006 and 2007, the performance and the scale effect of standard wind turbine model will be tested in KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) LSWT(Low Speed Wind Tunnel) and the present results will be validated with the wind tunnel data.
