  • In this study, fire resistance of a fireproof material sprayed upon an immersed tunnel was experimentally evaluated under $HC_{inc}$ and IS0834(duration of 4 hours) fire scenarios. Under $HC_{inc}$ fire scenario, the maximum inner temperatures of a concrete specimen at the depth of 0, 25 and 50 mm from the interface between the structure and the fire-proofing layer were $311^{\circ}C$, $194^{\circ}C$ and $142^{\circ}C$ respectively. Similarly, the corresponding maximum temperatures under IS0834 fire scenario were $332^{\circ}C$, $222^{\circ}C$ and $179^{\circ}C$ respectively. From the results, it was revealed that the two different fire scenarios assumed in this study have almost the same fire capacity as each other in the maximum temperature concept. In addition, a structural analysis of the immersed tunnel under $HC_{inc}$ fire scenario was carried out to verify the effects of the fireproof material on its structural stability. Material loss and deterioration of a concrete specimen without any fire-proofing measure was also experimentally evaluated to obtain input parameters for the structural analysis under such a severe fire scenario. From the results, it was confirmed that the application of fireproof measures to the immersed tunnel is essential for its structural stability even under a severe fire scenario.

  • While displacement type Deep-V mono hulls have superior seakeeping behaviour at speed, catamarans typically have modest behaviour in rough seas. It is therefore a logical progression to combine the superior seakeeping performance of a displacement type Deep-V mono-hull with the high-speed benefits of a catamaran to take the advantages of both hull forms. The displacement Deep-V catamaran concept was developed in Newcastle University and Newcastle University's own multi-purpose research vessel, which was launched in 2011, pushed the design envelope still further with the successful adoption of a novel anti-slamming bulbous bow and tunnel stern for improved efficiency. This paper presents the hullform development of this unique vessel to understand the contribution of the novel bow and stern features on the performance of the Deep-V catamaran. The study is also a further validation of the hull resistance by using advanced numerical analysis methods in conjunction with the model test. An assessment of the numerical predictions of the hull resistance is also made against physical model test results and shows a good agreement between them.

  • The switching characteristics and the magnetization-flop behavior in magnetic tunnel junctions exchange biased by synthetic antiferromagnets (SyAFs) are investigated by using a computer simulations based on a single-domain multilayer model. The bias field acting on the free layer is found to be sensitive to the thickness of neighboring layers, and the thickness dependence of the bias field is greater at smaller cell dimensions due to larger magnetostatic interactions. The resistance to magnetization flop increases with decreasing cell size due to increased shape anisotropy. When the cell dimensions are small and the synthetic antiferromagnet is weakly, or not pinned, the magnetization directions of the two layers sandwiching the insulating layer are aligned antiparallel due to a strong magnetostatic interaction, resulting in an abnormal magneto resistance (MR) change from the high-MR state to zero, irrespective of the direction of the free-layer switching. The threshold field for magnetization-flop is found to increase linearly with increasing antiferromagnetic exchange coupling in the synthetic antiferromagnet. Irrespective of the magnetic parameters and cell sizes, magnetization flop does not exist near zero applied field, indicating that magnetization flop is driven by the Zeeman energy.

  • This paper discusses the nonlinear time-invarient circuit composed of a tunnel diode. Prior to determine the solution of the nonlinear network which has negative resistance elements, the static characteristics of the nonlinear resistance elements need to be represented by function. Polynomial curve fitting is discussed to represent the static characteristies by least squares approximation. In order to solve the nonlinear network, the state equations for the networks are set up and solved by prediction corrector method. Finally, the limit cycle is plotted to discuss the stability of the nonlinear network and the oscillation condition.

  • Comprehensive experimental works are carried out for the optimal design of a centrifugal blower adopted in an indoor unit of an air-conditioner. The models for consideration are typical multi-blade turbo blower and limit loaded one, respectively. The main interest lies on the fluid dynamics performance when the blower Is installed in the practical system. The methodologies are an experimental estimations with a wind tunnel for blower performance and PIV measurement for the detail flow information. A centrifugal blower with limit loaded fan shows pronounced performances in terms of the flow rate and static pressure rise and the reason is explained by the precise measurement of the flows between blades using PIV. Consequently, it is found that the blower is proper for the flows with a resistance in down stream such as a heat exchanger.

  • Tunnel diode oscillator consisting of a tunnel diode(negative-resistance element) and a passive linear load. In this paper maximizing the frequeney of a negative reistance oscillator with varying a passive linear load is investigated. The method of theoretical analysis, utiliying impedance loei in the complex plane and experimental data shows that the maximum frequencies of quasi-harmonic oscillation is higher in the parrallal-RL load than in the resistive load.

  • Republic of korea has begun operating high speed train service according as KTX service operation starts in 2004. Also, EMU whose maximum speed is over 150 kph will be starting to service with electrification and improvement of existing railroad. Moreover, metropolitan electric railways have begun an express service to increase scheduled speed. Therefore, running resistance of rolling stock becomes more important factor effects on the performance. Running resistance of rolling stock is the factor which is necessary for the performance or operation plan of rolling stock, and it's related to rolling friction, slip friction, drag force, gradient, acceleration, curvature, tunnel condition and so on. It is possible to be calculated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). However it is predicted by experimental equation from running resistance test because of the complex calculation and manifold variables. In this paper, studies about running resistance of rolling stock is introduced, and each term of experimental equation is studied through theoretical approximation. Also, running resistance of rolling stock is estimated by the result of running resistance test, and effects being related to friction, drag force, gradient is examined.

  • We fabricated TMR devices which have doubly oxidized tunnel barrier using plasma oxidation method to form homogeneously oxidized AlO tunnel barrier. We sputtered 10 $\AA$-bottom Al layer and oxidized it with oxidation time of 10 sec. Subsequent sputtering of 13 $\AA$-Al was performed and the metallic layer was oxidized for 50, 80, and 120 sec., respectively. The electrical resistance changed from 500 Ω to 2000 Ω with increase of oxidation time, while variation of MR ratio was little spreading 27∼31 % which is larger than that of TMR device of ordinary single tunnel barrier. We calculated effective barrier height and width by measuring I-V curves, from which we found the barrier height was 1.3∼1.8 eV sufficient for tunnel barrier, and the barrier width (<15.0 $\AA$) was smaller than physical thickness. Our results may be caused by insufficient oxidation of Al precursor into A1$_2$O$_3$. However, doubly oxidized tunnel barriers were superior to conventional single tunnel barrier in uniformity and density. Our results imply that we were able to improve MR ratio and tune resistance by employing doubly oxidized tunnel barrier process.
