This paper is aimed to analyze the achievements of the Tunnel Monitoring System(TMS), implemented in Seoul subway L5~L8, and to find out improved methods. By introducing the TMS, it is possible to inspect tunnel facilities for 24 hours a day while trains are operated. The inspection capability could be expanded, the accuracy was improved, and the cycle was shortened. The efficiency of manpower was improved and the surplus manpower could be used for other tasks of facilities maintenance. As a result, by introduction of the TMS, the amount of tunnel maintenance was increased by 225% and the train service troubles caused by facility problems were decreased by 53%.
Purpose: This paper investigates and analyzes the loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring sensor in metropolitan and high speed railroad tunnel in Korea and abroad. Method: After 5~6 years from the installation, the maintenance monitoring sensor on metropolitan transit tunnels showed the loss and damage ratio from 14.2% to 14.8% in Seoul metro line no. 5, 6, 7, 9, and 13.9% in UK channel tunnel. Based on the result, 15% is thought to be a proper set for the elapsed years, which is 5 years from the installation. Results: The maintenance monitoring sensor on high speed railroad tunnels showed the loss and damage ratio of 60.9% in Ho-Nam high speed railroad on 1 stage after 3 ~ 5 years from the installation, which was approximately 4 times as high as that of Seoul metro line no. 5, 6, 7, 9. Conclusion: Kyung-Bu high speed railroad on 2 stage, after 8~10 years from the installation, showed the loss and damage ratio of 66.8%. Based on the result, it can be inferred that the loss and damage ratio increases drastically after 5~10 years from the installation. Therefore, it is necessary to study on the loss and damage ratio of long term elapsed years, especially more than 10 years from the installation.

In order to ensure the safety of the subsea tunnel during its construction and operation, unlike the underground structures on land, the special monitoring system is essential which considers the characteristics of subsea tunnels in addition to conventional stress and displacement measurements applied to existing land tunnels. Therefore, the concept applied to NATM is reorganized to evaluate the stability of subsea tunnels. And the observation system for making a monitoring plan, the critical strain theory for tunnel safety management and MS monitoring methods for detecting the local failure and crack initiation of rock and supports, are introduced. Finally, the scheme of monitoring and management for subsea tunnels by using these methods is suggested.

This paper is a follow-up to previous papers entitled, "Development of Tunnel-Environment Monitoring System and Its Installation" I [1] and II [2]. The target tunnel of these studies is the Solan Tunnel, which is a loop-type, single-track, 16.7-km-long tunnel located in mountainous terrain and passing through the Baekdudaegan mountain range. It is an ordinary railway tunnel designed for both freight and passenger trains. We analyzed the environmental conditions of the tunnel using temperature and humidity data recorded over approximately one year. The data were recorded using the Tunnel Rough Environment Measuring System (TREMS), which measures environmental data in subway and high-speed train tunnels and is installed in three locations inside the tunnel. Previous studies analyzed environmental conditions inside tunnels located in or near a city, whereas the tunnel in this study is located in a mountainous area. The tunnel conditions were compared with those measured outside the tunnel for each month. Hourly changes during summer and winter periods were also analyzed, and the environmental conditions at different locations inside the tunnel were compared. The results are widely applicable in studies on the thermal environment and air quality of tunnels, as well as for computer analysis of tunnel airflow such as tunnel ventilation and fire simulations.

Subway tunnel structure has been rapidly developed in many cities for its strong transport capacity. The model-based damage detection of subway tunnel structure is usually difficult due to the complex modeling of soil-structure interaction, the indetermination of boundary and so on. This paper proposes a new data-based method for the damage detection of subway tunnel structure. The root mean square acceleration and cross correlation function are used to derive a statistical pattern recognition algorithm for damage detection. A damage sensitive feature is proposed based on the root mean square deviations of the cross correlation functions. X-bar control charts are utilized to monitor the variation of the damage sensitive features before and after damage. The proposed algorithm is validated by the experiment of a full-scale two-rings subway tunnel lining, and damages are simulated by loosening the connection bolts of the rings. The results verify that root mean square deviation is sensitive to bolt loosening in the tunnel lining and X-bar control charts are feasible to be used in damage detection. The proposed data-based damage detection method is applicable to the online structural health monitoring system of subway tunnel lining.

Effects of railway tunnel excavation on water level at a national groundwater monitoring station in Mokpo were evaluated by field investigation and numerical groundwater modeling. The water level at the station has experienced a decline of about 5 m within 1 year since July 2002. From the field investigation, it was concluded that decrease of precipitation oo increase of grundwater use was not reason for the decline. The Mokpo tunnel of new Honam railway, 70 m apart from the national station, appeared most plausible cause and a period of the tunnel excavation generally well matches up that of the drawdown. To quantify the effects of the tunneling on the water level, a groundwater flow modeling was performed. Especially, a most probable conceptual model was optimized through multiple preliminary simulations of various scenarios because there were few hydrogeological data available for the study area. The optimized model was finally used for the quantification. Based on the field investigation and the numerical simulations, it was concluded that the tunnel excavation was one of the most probable reasons for the substantial water level decline but further hydrogeologic investigation and continuous monitoring are essentially required for the surrounding area.

The introduction of geodetic methods of absolute displacement monitoring in tunnels has significantly improved the value of the measurements. Structurally controlled behavior and influences of an anisotropic rock mass can be determined, and the excavation and support adjusted accordingly. Three-dimensional finite element simulations of different weakness zone properties, thicknesses, and orientations relative to the tunnel axis were carried out and the function parameters were evaluated from the results. The results were compared to monitoring results from Alpine tunnels in heterogeneous rock. The good qualitative correlation between trends observed on site and numerical results gives hope that by a routine determination of the function parameters during excavation the prediction of rock mass conditions ahead of the tunnel face can be improved. Implementing the rules developed from experience and simulations into the monitoring data evaluation program allows to automatically issuing information on the expected rock mass quality ahead of the tunnel.

The 3D absolute displacement monitoring system has been developed to analyze the tunnel convergence measured under construction of underground structures and to manage effectively the measured data. The system is comprised of the total station, the anchor-typed target pin and the 3D absolute displacement measurement and management program. In this paper, the types and specifications of the 3D total station were presented. The anchor-typed target pin, an improved model of traditional one, was developed and its sightable distance and measurement accuracy were checked by field tests. Also a 3D absolute displacement measurement and management program, TEMS 3D, was developed to provide some analysis tools including the trend and influence lines. L/C ratio, S/C ratio and the like. The developed system was applied the construction stage of a railway tunnel for testing purpose. It is verified that the developed system is capable of predicting weak zones ahead of tunnel face by comparing with results of TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) survey.
Face mapping and displacement monitoring during tunnel construction are the most influential information for the stability assessment of ground and around structures. Especially, the result of face mapping and displacement analysis is essential to the excavation and support design in NATM which is based on the drilling and blasting. However, there have not been so many studies to put those useful information into practice for decision-making process during construction. The study reviewed the tunnel behaviour based on the RMR rating and displacement monitoring when the geological condition of rock mass varies inevitably. The study analysed the crown settlement using convergence equation in order to compensate the disparity induced by the location and time of measurement and found a distinct relation between the geological condition and the line of influence. As a result of analysing the various parameters related to the tunnel convergence according to the geological condition, the study suggested the basic knowledge about the relation between face mapping and displacement behaviour of tunnel.

In this study, we dealt with an analysis and development of measurement systems for tunnel and slope structures under a high velocity. Deterioration of tunnel and slope structures becomes a critical issue in regard to both safety and economic concerns. Deterioration itself is inevitable, but condition assessment technology and nondestructive evaluation techniques could provide solutions to ensure public safety by means of detecting damage before serious and expensive degradation consequences occur. We reviewed the existing monitoring and maintenance systems of slopes and tunnels and more advanced directions, especially for highways under high-speed vehicles.
