Wind tunnel test is often adopted to assess the site-specific wind characteristics for the design of bridges as suggested by current design standards. To investigate the wind characteristics of flat and mountainous terrain, two topographic models are tested in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind characteristics, including the vertical and horizontal mean wind speed distributions, the turbulence intensity, and the wind power spectra, are presented. They are investigated intensively in present study with the discussions on the effect of wind direction and the effect of topography. It is indicated that for flat terrain, the wind direction has negligible effect on the wind characteristics, however, the assumption of a homogenous wind field for the mountainous terrain is not applicable. Further, the non-homogeneous wind field can be defined based on a proposed approach if the wind tunnel test or on-site measurement is performed. The calculated turbulence intensities and wind power spectra by using the measured wind speeds are also given. It is shown that for the mountainous terrain, engineers should take into account the variability of the wind characteristics for design considerations.

In this study, the total loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring which is installed and operated in the domestic and foreign tunnel structure is researched and analyzed for estimating the loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring sensor of subway tunnel. The total loss and damage ratio at the elapsed time of 5-6 years after installation is 14.2% in the Seoul metro line no.5,6 and 7, 14.8% in the section 1 of the Seoul metro line no.9, 13.9% in the Channel tunnel of England and all of them are close to 15%. Therefore, it is reasonable to reflect that the total loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring sensor of subway tunnel is estimated provisionally 15% on design, and hence the study of the loss and damage ratio with the number of elapsed years in long-term by the measurement category will be needed.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate tibial tunnel widening prospectively after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring tendon grafts using Rigidfix (DePuy Mitek, Raynham, MA) femoral fixation and Intrafix (DePuy Mitek) tibial fixation. 56 consecutive patients who underwent ACL reconstruction with a minimum of 2 years' postoperative evaluation were reviewed. On the anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral radiographs, the diameter of the tibial tunnel was measured at proximal, middle, and distal positions and the shape of the tibial tunnels were classified. Tunnel widening was defined as widening of greater than 2 mm. Group I was defined as cases with no tunnel widening and group II defined as cases with tunnel widening. Postoperative laxity evaluations were performed using Lachman test, pivot-shift test, and Instrumented laxity testing using the KT-1000 arthrometer. On the AP radiographs, the average diameter of the tibial tunnel increased 8.8% at 6 months and 8.5% at 12 months postoperatively compared to the immediate postoperative day. On the lateral radiographs, the average diameter of the tibial tunnel increased 7.2% at 6 months and 8.1% at 12 months year postoperatively compared to the immediate postoperative day. The tunnel shape evaluation revealed predominantly linear type in 53 patients (95%). Group I was 42 patients (75%) and group II was 14 (25%). The average KT-1000 measurement was 1.0~1.8 mm in group I and 2.1~2.8 mm in group II (p>0.05) The Lachman and pivot-shift showed tests no significant differences between the two groups. In conclusion, hamstring ACL reconstruction using Rigidfix and Intrafix fixation showed less widening of the tibial tunnels than observed in previously published studies.
In the cold region, the frozen damages in highway tunnels and regular road tunnels have widely been investigated and reported, but the measurement has not been sufficient made. The average temperature in cold region is below the zero, resulting in that the damage due to freezing at the entrance/exit of tunnel is more severe than in the middle of tunnel. In this study, a heating element was developed to prevent the tunnel lining from being frozen by enforcing to increase the temperature of tunnel lining. Then field tests using the developed heating element were performed and it was ensured that the temperature of tunnel lining increased after a certain time.

This paper is to analyze the behaviors of tunnel support by TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor using electrical pulse. To analysis the behaviors of tunnel support, Copper tape as sensing materials was studied for on-site installation. Copper tape to the top of the glass tape, foam tape, and shielding the lower part was used electromagnetic shield sheet. For a high sensitivity to load and fill out the measurement noise emissions has been developed for the production of materials. This sensing material through the tunnel model tests for the change by surcharge load in TDR data were analyzed. Varing stiffness and support of conditions were determined the change of TDR data through PVC pipe tunnel section model tests. By comparing TDR data and finite element analysis, the behaviors of the tunnel support materials were analyzed qualitatively.
Tunnel face mapping involves the determination of rock discontinuities or weak rock conditions where extra support might be required. In this study, we investigated the application of Lidar scanning and photogrammetry to quantitatively characterize discontinuities of the rock mass on the tunnel face during excavation. The 3D models of tunnel faces generated by using these methods enable accurate and automatic discontinuity measurement to overcome the limitations of manual mapping. The results of this study show that both photogrammetry and Lidar can be used to reconstruct the 3D model of the tunnel face, although the photogrammetric 3D model is less detailed than its counterpart produced by Lidar. Given acceptable accuracy and cost-effectiveness, photogrammetry can be a fast, reliable, and low-cost alternative to Lidar for acquiring 3D models and determining rock discontinuities on tunnel faces.
The characteristics of the coherence functions of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on the Shanghai World Trade Centre - a 492 m super-tall building with section varying along height are studied via a synchronous multi-pressure measurement of the rigid model in wind tunnel simulating of the turbulent, and the corresponding mathematical expressions are proposed there from. The investigations show that the mathematical expressions of coherence functions in across-wind and torsional-wind directions can be constructed by superimposition of a modified exponential decay function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding respectively, while that in along-wind direction need only be constructed by the former, similar to that of wind speed. Moreover, an inductive analysis method is proposed to summarize the fitted parameters of the wind force coherence functions of every two measurement levels of altitudes. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well. Later, the influences of coherence functions on wind-induced dynamic responses are analyzed in detail based on the proposed mathematical expressions and the frequency-domain method of random vibration theory.
The characteristics of amplitudes and power spectra of X axial, Y axial, and RZ axial (i.e., body axis) wind forces on a 492 m high-rise building with a section varying along height in typical wind directions are studied via a rigid model wind tunnel test of pressure measurement. Then the corresponding mathematical expressions of power spectra of X axial (across-wind), Y axial (along-wind) and torsional wind forces in $315^{\circ}$ wind directions are proposed. The investigation shows that the mathematical expressions of wind force spectra of the main structure in across-wind and torsional directions can be constructed by the superimposition of an modified wind spectrum function and a peak function caused by turbulent flow and vortex shedding, respectively. While that in along-wind direction can only be constructed by the former and is similar to wind spectrum. Moreover, the fitted parameters of the wind load spectra of each measurement level of altitude are summarized, and the unified parametric results are obtained. The comparisons of the first three order generalized force spectra show that the proposed mathematical expressions accord with the experimental results well.
This paper presents the field measurement results of wind effects on a super-tall building (CITIC Plaza, 391 m high) located in Guangzhou. The field data such as wind speed, wind direction and acceleration responses were simultaneously and continuously recorded from the tall building by a wind and vibration monitoring system during two typhoons. The typhoon-generated wind characteristics including turbulence intensity, gust factor, peak factor, turbulence integral length scale and power spectral density of fluctuating wind speed were presented and discussed. The dynamic characteristics of the tall building were determined based on the field measurements and compared with those calculated from a 3D finite element model of the building. The measured natural frequencies of the two fundamental sway modes of the building were found to be larger than those calculated. The damping ratios of the building were evaluated by the random decrement technique, which demonstrated amplitude-dependent characteristics. The field measured acceleration responses were compared with wind tunnel test results, which were found to be consistent with the model test data. Finally, the serviceability performance of the super-tall building was assessed based on the field measurement results.

Particulate matter produced by diesel engines is of concern to cngine manufactures because of its environmental impact. The majority of diesel particles are in the range of smaller than 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Because of their tiny volume, ultrafine diesel particles contribute very little to the total mass concentration which is currently regulated for automobile emissions. Ultrafinc particles are known to have deleterious effects upon human health cspecially because they penetrate deeply human respiratory tract and have negative effects on the health. In this study, the engine exhaust gas was diluted in a dilution tunnel and the particle size distribution was measured using the scanning mobility particel sizer system. Measurements of the number and the mass concentrations of the diesel exhaust were made under different engine ooperating conditions. The dilution sampling system provided a common basis for collection of the exhaust by cooling and diluting the source emission prior to the measurement. The measurement results showed that the particle size distributions of the exhaust from the diesel vehicles equipment with either heavy-duty or lignt-duty diesel engines, were similar in the particle size range of 0.08~0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
