  • When a train passes a conventional tunnel at high speed, an environmental noise issue arises by pressure variation and micro-pressure waves at the exit of the tunnel. It is known that this issue can be reduced by using dummy tunnel duct on the tunnel entrance. We studied the variances of micro-pressure waves at the exit of tunnel and pressure variation within the tunnel, by altering surface area and length of the dummy tunnel duct. For analyze this train-tunnel relation problem, axi-simmetric steady compressible flow solver was used. Changing the length of the dummy tunnel duct can adjust pressure variation, changing the surface area of the dummy tunnel duct can adjust volume and pressure variation of the micro-pressure wave. Thus, optimized surface area and length of the dummy tunnel duct can simultaneously reduce environmental noise pollution by micro-pressure wave and issues by the pressure variation.

  • Despite the role of tunnels in today's roadway environment, the study on tunnel lighting is still scant. Drivers passing through a tunnel face some difficulties caused by the visual differences between outside and inside of the tunnel. The whitehole phenomenon at a tunnel exit-zone severely decreases the driver's visibility in the daytime. A probeam lighting is generally recommended for the prevention of it. This paper simulates an exit-zone with a whitehole phenomenon to verify the effect of probeam lighting. Even though the tunnel lighting is important, it is not easy to consider enough number of lighting alternatives at the stage of tunnel design due to the complexity of tunnel conditions. This paper is expected to contribute improving the visibility in tunnels, especially at the exit-zone.

  • Recently, tunnel constructions have been increased in Korea. According to the increment of tunnel constructions, cases of tunnel collapses also have been increased under tunnel construction. Among these tunnel collapses, after a certain amount of time has elapsed due to excessive displacements on slope of tunnel exit or entrance, cases of tunnel collapse have been increased rapidly. Therefore, the case study was conducted in this study to figure out factors effect on the tunnel collapses due to excessive displacements on tunnel exit or entrance slopes. Base on the case study, the fragmental zone of fault and the rainfall were most important factors on the collapse.

  • As a high-speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of it due to the piston action of train. The compression waves propagate along the tunnel and reflect backward at the exit of tunnel. A complex wave phenomenon appears in the tunnel, because of the successive reflections of the pressure waves at the exit and entrance of tunnel. The pressure waves can give rise to large pressure transients which impose the fluctuating loads on the running train. It is highly needed that the pressure transients should be predicted to design the train body and to improve the comfort for the passengers in the train. In the present study, the pressure transients and aerodynamic drag for two-trains running in a tunnel were calculated numerically for a wide range of train speed, and compared with the results of the previous tunnel tests and calculations for one train. The present calculation results agreed with ones of the tunnel tests, and the mechanism of pressure transients was made clear.

  • Tunnel lighting is composed of entrance zone, interior zone and exit zone by KS C 3703. We have to consider adaptation at entrance zone and exit zone lighting to prevent deteriorate visibility like black hole and white hole phenomenon. So External luminance, vehicle velocity and traffic volume should be considered in threshold zone lighting and vehicle speed and traffic volume should be considered in interior zone lighting. But existing tunnel lighting system is not good at visibility and economic because that is only controled by external luminance. So in this paper, We improve visibility and economic of tunnel lighting system using fuzzy reasoning according to external luminance, vehicle velocity, traffic volume.

  • In this study, reduced-scale experiments were conducted to analyze smoke movement in tunnel fire with roof vent. The 1/20 scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling using gasoline pool fire ranging from 7.3 to 15.4 cm in diameter with total heat release rate from 1.0 to 8.46kw. In case of 1 m high vent, smoke front reached to the tunnel exit at about 16 sec delayed with ventilation. The delay time grew longer with the vent height. The temperature after the vent was lower than that without the vent. The exit temperature declined maximum of $20^{\circ}C$ after passing the vent. It was confirmed that the thickness of smoke layer was maintained uniformly under the 25% height of the tunnel through the visualized smoke now by a laser sheet and the digital camcorder.

  • In this research, tunnel stern was applied on the asymmetric high-speed catamaran to evaluate vessel's hydrodynamic performance by numerical method, and the tunnel stern types are distinguished by angle of inclination of tunnel exit region into 3cases ($0^{\circ}$, $3^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$). Consequently, it is confirmed that the total resistances of tunnel stern which have $0^{\circ}$ of inclination are lower about 4.8-17.9% than the bare hull in the wide speed range, but those of $3^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$ of inclination tunnel stern are higher than bare hull about 5-14% and 5-29%, respectively. On the other hand, trim angles of $0^{\circ}$ of inclination tunnel stern show similar trend with those of bare hull in whole ranges of FnV but those of $3^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$ of inclination tunnel stern are stabilized and declined respectively after FnV=1.54. These phenomena indicated that increasing angle of inclination of tunnel exit region had negative influence on resistance performance, however, it could make vessel's operation performance better than bare hull.

  • When a high-speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates along the tunnel. This wave subsequently emerges form the exit portal of the tunnel, which causes an impulsive noise. In the present study, experimental investigation is carried out on the sonic boom noise with parameters of train speed, blockage ratio, nose shape of train and airshaft. These experimental results show that several countermeasures could be used to efficiently reduce the sonic boom. In addition, numerical analysis is performed to predict the sonic boom. The predicted sound waves are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify, evaluate and grade the existing highway tunnels to increase landscape and natural statistics keeping the structural safety about tunnel gates area and induce the ones that will be constructed in the future by drawing the improvements and restoring the techniques as an environment-friendly. To examine the types of tunnel gate area, total 54 tunnels were investigated by selecting Gyeongbu Expressway, Yeongdong Expressway, and Jungang Expressway. Tunnel entrances and exit ports were classified as a Wall-closed type and Protruding type, which is based on tunnel gate type. Vegetation Landscape types were classified as Multilayer-Same as the surrounding landscape_(MS), Multilayer-Difference of surrounding landscape_(MD), Single layer-Same as the surrounding landscape_(SS), Single layer-Difference of surrounding landscape_(SD), and a Desolate type which based on vegetation layers and environment-friendly. Potential vegetation recovery was identified based on the structural stability and revegetation potential of the tunnel. The factors include the structural stability of the slope height and slope gradient were selected. Revegetation potential was identified as a growth potential. This factor was used in the step to classify vegetation recovery potential of a tunnel. The result, which investigated the types of tunnel entrances and exit parts has found that the most typical in 33 places was a Wall closed type with 61.1% of the total ones. The case of vegetation landscape types was created but different from the ones surrounding it with 85.2% of the total ones. It is judged that the currently constructed vegetation of tunnel entrance and exit parts had put convenience on the safety and management before landscape consideration. In addition, tunnel entrance and exit parts with excellent potential for vegetation recovery were all Protruding type. In addition, it is judged that slope stability can easily obtain growth. Therefore, entrance and exist of the highway tunnels, which will be constructed in the future, should reflect location and the result of the natural and ecological survey in design by performing it in advance and their types, which minimize the damage area range, should be applied to the local characteristics suitably. In addition, the ecologically healthy tunnel construction should be done by introducing active vegetation recovery techniques based on its safety.
