Shield tunnels are widely used throughout the world. However, their seismic performance has not been well studied. This paper focuses on the seismic response of a large scale model tunnel in compacted sand. A 9.3 m long, 3.7 m wide and 2.5 m high rigid box was filled with sand so as to simulate the sandy soil surrounding the tunnel. The setup was excited on a large-scale shake table. The model tunnel used was a 1:8 scaled model with a cross-sectional diameter of 900 mm. The effective shock absorbing layer (SAL) on the seismic response of the model tunnel was also investigated. The thickness of the tunnel lining is 60 mm. The earthquake motion recorded from the Kobe earthquake waves was used. The ground motions were scaled to have the same peak accelerations. A total of three peak accelerations were considered (i.e., 0.1 g, 0.2 g and 0.4 g). During the tests, the strain, acceleration and soil pressure on the surface of the tunnel were measured. In order to investigate the effect of shock absorbing layer on the dynamic response of the sand- tunnel system, two tunnel models were set up, one with and one without the shock absorbing layer of foam board were used. The results shows the longitudinal direction acceleration of the model tunnel with a shock absorbing layer were lower than those of model tunnel without the shock absorbing layer, Which indicates that the shock absorbing layer has a beneficial effect on the acceleration reduction. In addition, the shock absorbing layer has influence on the hoop strain and earth pressure of the model tunnel, this the effect of shock absorbing layer to the model tunnel will be discussed in the paper.

This paper presents a new approach of closing the tunnel face with sprayed concrete to reduce the stress at the tunnel face and displacement occurring at the ground surface during tunnel excavation. In order to carry out this research, the experimental and numerical studies are performed. In the experimental study, the model tests are carried out according to the closure ratio of tunnel face, tunnel depth and tunnel excavation length. The model test results are analyzed and interpreted by numerical calculation in order to verify both results obtained from experimental and numerical studies. It is clearly found that the tunnel face stability is decreased in decreasing the closure ratio of tunnel face. The results also show that the tunnel face is stable when the closure ratio of tunnel face is larger than 80%. This research will be very useful to develop the economical tunnel face closing system.
Scientific forensic techniques are used to verify environmental impact of groundwater pollution, surface water pollution, air pollution, noise, and vibration according to residents' complaints in connection with construction and civil engineering works. In this study, we investigated the contamination of groundwater and the lowering of the groundwater level in an area surrounding a tunnel excavation site for the Andong-Yeongdeok national road, using a forensic hydrogeological technique. We reviewed the groundwater level and water quality of well GW1 in the area surrounding the tunnel excavation site as well as tunnel construction information and then we analyzed the correlations among the obtained data. Before tunnel excavation, the water level of well GW1 was lower than the tunnel elevation. Considering the relationship between the precipitation, tunnel discharge, tunnel depth, and groundwater level of well GW1, the groundwater flowed from the tunnel to well GW1. Moreover, the tunnel discharge and groundwater levels were not related to each other. The pH of well GW1 was 8.4 before tunnel excavation. During excavation, the pH declined to 8.1-8.2 at the beginning, and increased to 8.8 at the end of the excavation. The fluorine concentration in well GW1 was 2.49 mg/L, 1.91-3.22 mg/L, and 1.7-2.67 mg/L, respectively, before, during, and after the excavation. The sulfate ion concentration was very high, over 2,000 mg/L, before and during the excavation; after the excavation, it was between 200 and 323 mg/L. Turbidity was 1.47, 10.5, and 4.51 NTU before, during, and after tunnel excavation, respectively. Therefore, the excavation of this tunnel is not related to the groundwater quality of well GW1.

Government plans to construct a double-deck tunnel under a portion of Gyeongbu Expressway that will solve traffic problems and could also be used as a flood storage facility. Divergence tunnels connect the main tunnel to the urban areas and their construction effects on adjacent structures at shallow depth need to be analyzed. This study primarily includes the numerical analysis of construction effects of divergence tunnels on utility tunnels. The utility tunnel was analyzed for three cases of volume loss applied to the divergence tunnel and two cases of the angle between main tunnel and divergence tunnel ($36^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$). The results show that the more the volume loss was applied and the shorter the distance was between utility tunnel and divergence tunnel, the more the utility tunnel was affected in terms of induced displacements, angular displacement and stability. The worst scenario was found out to be the one where the angle between main tunnel and divergence tunnel was $36^{\circ}$ and the distance between divergence tunnel and utility tunnel was 10 m, resulting in the largest displacement and differential settlement at the bottom of the utility tunnel. A relationship between the angular displacement and the distance to diameter ratio was also established.
In this study, the behavior and safety of an existing tunnel and its facilities are investigated when a new tunnel adjacent to the existing tunnel is blasted. The design of the new tunnel puts priority on stability of the tunnel itself over the safety of the facilities which are installed within the existing tunnel such as jet fans. And thus, a detailed consideration on securing the safety of the existing facilities has been insufficient. An analysis on the types of traffic accidents in the last ten years shows that most incidents were due to the driver's improper response in emergency situations and unexpected obstacles. In consideration of this analysis, the safety of the facilities in the existing tunnel was secured by minimizing the charging amount for each hangfire and changing the excavation method of evacuation communication shelters to the large center hole cut blasting method to reduce blasting vibration. For a more quantitative analysis, measurement devices were installed inside the existing tunnel, at houses adjacent to the new tunnel, near jet fans in the existing tunnel. This enabled real time measurement of displacements of the existing tunnel, adjacent houses, and jet fans without interrupting traffic flow. Therefore, the improvements of charging amount for each hangfire, the blasting method, and the measurement method are suggested in this paper to secure the safety of the facilities in the existing tunnel when a new tunnel, located on a large city and adjacent to an existing tunnel, is designed.

Nowadays, the construction of tunnels with a shallow depth drastically in urban areas increases. But the effect of sidewall displacement in shallow tunnel on its behavior is not well known yet. Most studies on the shallow tunnel have been limited to the stability and the failure of the tunnel and the adjacent ground in plane strain state. Therefore, the model tests were conducted in a model ground which was built with carbon rods, in order to investigate the impact of the tunnel sidewall displacement on the lateral load transfer to the adjacent ground. The lateral displacement of the tunnel sidewall and the load transfered to the adjacent ground were measured in model tests for various overburdens (0.50D, 0.75D, 1.00D, 1.25D). As results, if the cover depth of tunnel was over a constant depth (0.75D) in a shallow tunnel, the tunnel sidewall was failed with a constant shape not depending on the tunnel cover depth and also not affected by the opposite side of the wall. But, if the cover depth of tunnel was under a constant depth (0.75D), the failure of the tunnel sidewall could affect the opposite sidewall. In addition, if the displacement of tunnel sidewall with 50% of the critical displacement occurred, the tunnel failure was found to be at least 75%. However, additional studies are deemed necessary, since they may differ depending on the ground conditions.

This paper is a follow-up to previous papers entitled, "Development of Tunnel-Environment Monitoring System and Its Installation" I [1] and II [2]. The target tunnel of these studies is the Solan Tunnel, which is a loop-type, single-track, 16.7-km-long tunnel located in mountainous terrain and passing through the Baekdudaegan mountain range. It is an ordinary railway tunnel designed for both freight and passenger trains. We analyzed the environmental conditions of the tunnel using temperature and humidity data recorded over approximately one year. The data were recorded using the Tunnel Rough Environment Measuring System (TREMS), which measures environmental data in subway and high-speed train tunnels and is installed in three locations inside the tunnel. Previous studies analyzed environmental conditions inside tunnels located in or near a city, whereas the tunnel in this study is located in a mountainous area. The tunnel conditions were compared with those measured outside the tunnel for each month. Hourly changes during summer and winter periods were also analyzed, and the environmental conditions at different locations inside the tunnel were compared. The results are widely applicable in studies on the thermal environment and air quality of tunnels, as well as for computer analysis of tunnel airflow such as tunnel ventilation and fire simulations.

The Second Namsan Tunnel required renovation. The landscape design was conducted as part of the comprehensive programs for renovation. The landscape design covered site analysis, design development, a working drawing and a maintenance plan. In May of 2001, the Second Namsan Tunnel was renovated and reopened to traffic. The tunnel was recreated as a new type of tunnel with function and beauty. The entrance and retaining wall of the tunnel has public character. Users are greatly affected by the entrance and retaining walls along roads. The landscape architect had to find new materials and methods to improve the environment and to combine artwork with the entrance and walls of the tunnel. The surface of the tunnel entrance and retaining walls are artistically treated with ceramic tiles and paint. Various regional characteristics and cultural meaning are symbolically expressed. Or the tunnel entrance from the Joong-gu side, entitled "Glory of the Future", the hibiscus symbolizes the bright and glorious future of Korea. On the retaining walls, entitled "Hope", the promising Joong-gu is symbolized through image of Korean magpies, mountains, rocks, roses, winds and nature. As for the tunnel entrance from the Yongsan-gu side, entitled "Vivid Spirit", pine trees symbolize the Koreans′strong will and an enterprising spirit. On the retaining walls, entitled "Lively Motions", Yongsan-gu is symbolized through image of pigeons, mountains, rocks, roses, winds and clear skys. The entrance and retaining wall of the Second Namsan Tunnel, whose surfaces are treated with tiles and paint with artistic value, would create an atmosphere using large-scale wall paintings. In this artwork, users would perceive a unique sense of place through the symbolic images of the vertical planes of the tunnel.

Recently, because of the various factors by uncertainty of underground, the risks in tunnelling have been occurred increasingly. Therefore, it is very important to estimate and control the risks considering geotechnical conditions for tunnel stability and environmental problems by tunnel construction. In this study, the risk analysis for tunnel stability was carried out by classifying the risk factors such as ground support capacity, ground settlement, the inflow of groundwater into the tunnel and the damage by the earthquake. Also, the risk assessment for the environmental problems was performed by calculating the vibration and noise by blasting and the drawdown of the groundwater level caused by tunnel construction. Each risk factor was evaluated quantitatively based on the probabilistic and statistic technique, then it was analyzed the distribution characteristic along overall tunnel site. Finally, it was evaluated that how much each risk factor influences on the construction cost with a period for tunnel construction, so it is possible to perform reasonable tunnel design which was capable of minimizing the risks in the tunnel construction.

Many Studies of tunnel and tunnelling safety have been developed continuously based on the increasing social interests in underground space since 1990's in Korea. Because the growth of population in metropolitan has been accelerated at a faster pace than the development of the cities, underground facilities have been created as a great extent in view of less land space available. In this study, a lot of types of tunnel failure were surveyed and the detail causes were studied after many cases of tunnel failure were collected. There were suggested brief countermeasure of tunnel failure through case study. An expert system was developed to predict the safety of tunnel and choose proper tunnel reinforcement system using fuzzy quantification theory and fuzzy inference rule based on tunnel information database. The comparison result between the predicted reinforcement system level and measured ones was very similar. In-situ data were obtained in three tunnel sites including subway tunnel under Han river. This system will be very helpful to make the most of in-situ data and suggest proper applicability of tunnel reinforcement system developing more resonable tunnel support method from dependance of some experienced experts for the absent of guide.
