  • Compliance mismatch across an end-to-end anastomosis was measured In the In vitro experimental setup. A 35mm camera was used and Image process was done in Gould/ DeAnza Image processor. The results showed that compliances of Penrose tubing and synthetic PTFE grafts were In good agreement with the previously reported In vivo data. PTFE grafts exhibited a nonlinear behavior with compliance decreasing with Increasing transmural pressure, whereas the compliance of the Penrose tubing remained relatively constant within the range of the pressures in which data were obtained. The lumen cross sections at the anastomosis were affected by the suture and the mismatch In compliance between the Penrose tubing and vascular grafts. The varla~lons In the lumen dtameter at the anastomosis was more pronounced with increasing transmural pressures. From the present study, it was clearly demonstrated that the compliance of prosthetic grafts Is much lower than that of the arteries. In addition to the hemodynamlc consequences, compliance mismatch across the anastomosis has been known to lead to Increased anastomotlc and suture stresses with resultant suture line dehlscence and false aneurysm formation. Thus, there are good hemodynamic reasons to suppose that Introduction of a less compliant arterial graft Into the arterial circulation wlll be damaging and that grafts should be made to match the elastic behavior of their host arteries as closely possible.

  • In MHz operating wireless power transfer systems, skin- and proximity-effect losses in the transmitter and the receiver coils dominate the coil-to-coil efficiency of the system. A Litz-wire was regarded as a common solution for minimizing such Ohmic losses in high frequencies. In this paper, equivalent series resistances of 12 different cables including Litz-wire and copper tubing have been calculated and measured for a 6.78 MHz, 100W, 30 cm wireless power transfer system. It has been shown that the copper tubing has lower resistances compared to the Litz-wire in that frequency and a wireless power transfer system with the copper tubing was able to achieve much higher efficiency than a system using the Litz-wire. Calculations of the resistances and efficiencies were accomplished with analytical equations and those calculations were evaluated by experimental results.

  • A State-of-art methodologies on implementing conventional piezoelectric and flexible PVDF elements for generating ultrasonic guided waves in a tubing are presented. Comb transducers with PVDF can be efficiently applied to selectively excite a guided wave mode by wrapping around any size pipe while a conventional immersion type piezo-elements can be also possibly used with a modification of transducer fabrication. Technical comparisons between the use of angle beam probe and comb one will be also discussed in detail. The presented technique can be easily applied to NDE for a long range inspection of tubular structures.

  • Measurement of fluctuating pressure by tube system is carefully designed due to the organ-pipe resonance. It is necessary to correct the pressure before analysis. The three method for correction the distortion fluctuation pressure short tube length and the frequency response functions and insert a restrictor in the tube to increase the damping. The first method is useful when the tube length is short. In second method, the distorted signal through the tubing transformed into the frequency domain, dividing by transfer function and inverse fourier transforming back into the time domain gives the required pressure signal. In this paper three types of tubing which have different length of 100cm, 150cm, 200cm were experimented the distorted signal and correct the distortion signal

  • A finite analytic(FA) numerical study was performed to determin'e flow dynamics in the vicinity of an end-to-end anastomosis. Experimental data of instantaneous lumen cross-section were used to simulate steady flow through an end-to-end anastomosis In order to solve the governing axisymmetric Wavier-Stokes equations. Wall shear stresses increased proximal to the anastomosis In flow from the Penrose tubing to the PTFE graft. In flow the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stresses were observed distal to the anastomosis. The present study suggests a correlation betweerl regions of low wall shear stress and the do velopment of pnastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANFH ) in end-to-end anastomoses.

  • Biodegradation of toluene in liquid effluent stream was carried out using biofilms of Pseudomonas putida formed on celite particles in the bubble column bioreactor. Silicon rubber tubing was installed at the bottom of the bioreactor and liquid toluene was circulated within the tubing. Toluene diffused out of the tube wall and was transferred into the culture broth where degradation by biofilms occurred. The operating variables affecting the formation of biofihns on celite particles were investigated in the bubble column bioreactor, and it was found that formation of bifilm is favored by high dilution rate and supply rate of carbon source which stimulate the growth of initially attached cells. Continuous biodegradation of toluene using biofilms was stablely conducted in the bioreactor for more than one month without any significant fluctuation, showing a removal efficiency higher than 95% at the toluene transfer rate of 1.2 g/L/h.

  • The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses.
