The extract and fractions of Rumex acetosa (Polygonaceae), a Korean medicinal plant, were examined for their cytotoxicities against five cultured human tumor cell lines, i.e. A549 (non-small cell lung), SK-OV-3 (ovary), SK-MEL-2 (melanoma), XF498 (central nerve system) and HCY15 (colon), using the SRB (sulforhodamine-B) method in vitro and antimutagenic activities by Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 and SOS chromotest with E. coli PQ37. Among the tested samples, the methylene chloride fraction strongly inhibited the proliferation of each examined tumor cell line with $IC_{50}$ values ranged from 13.2 to $18.7\;{\mu}g/ml$ and showed potent antimutagenic activities with 96.1% and 96.7% at the concentration of 1 mg/plate against the mutagens, NPD and sodium azide, respectively. Its antigenotoxic activity was also very effective at the final concentration of $10\;{\mu}g/reaction$ tube against the mutagens, MNNG and NQO by SOS chromotest.

The behaviour of Modular GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers) decks for use in deteriorated bridge decks replacement are investigated experimentally in this study. As for the performance evaluation of bridge decks, experimental studies on the 3 test specimens with 1/5 scale of full size were carried out. Three specimens were sandwich plates with box tube cores. The constituents of bridge decks were glass fiber preforms and epoxy resin. The experimental results of all the specimens were summarized for maximum strength, stiffness and deformation capacity. A finite element analyses were compared to verify validity of experimental results.
In this study, we measured the anti-bacterial activity of radioisotope Lu-177 using a new laboratory instrument. The disk method used for the measurement of existing anti-bacterial antibiotics is drug diffusion into the medium. To measure the antimicrobial activity of a radioisotope, a new type of laboratory instrument is necessary to prevent the drug from spreading and the present invention was thus tested. In the medium, a space isolated separately for radioisotope injection was used to prevent the radioisotope from spreading and radioisotopes are actually injected by this system. We found that the antibacterial activity increased according to the radiation dose increases. It is expected that, through the present study, measuring the antibacterial activity of the other radioisotopes easily in the laboratory will be possible.
The laser welding and its analysis of thin-sheet carbon steels were carried out with high power $CO_{2}$ laser. The main factor of weld quality of laser welding is gap and edge quality. This work was preformed to focus on the gap tolerance problem during laser welding. First, bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of laser welding variables, and to obtain optimum welding condition. Butt welding was also carried out to show the effect of gap on the laser weldability of thin sheet. In order to investigate the effect of gap on formability of welded thin sheet, LDH test was caried out. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Otherwise, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of too much heat input. The optimum welding condition of welding was derived from bead width, penetration and hardness property. The maximum gap tolerance on laser welding was observed to be about 0.2mm. This gap size has good relationship with beam size of laser spot(about 0.3mm). The formability of welded sheet was about $80{\%}$ value of base metal and the gap size has not affected on the formability, although weld quality is dependent on the gap size.
In designing a 300 meter high skyscraper expected to be the tallest building in Japan, an earthquake-ridden country, we launched on the full-scale performance based design to ensure redundancy and establish new specifications using below new techniques. The following new techniques are applied because the existing techniques/materials are not enough to meet the established design criteria for the large-scale, irregularly-shaped building, and earth-conscious material saving and construction streamlining for reconstructing a station building are also required: ${\bullet}$ High strength materials: Concrete filled steel tube ("CFT") columns made of high-strength concrete and steels; ${\bullet}$ New joint system: Combination of outer diaphragm and aluminium spray jointing; ${\bullet}$ Various dampers including corrugated steel-plate walls, rotational friction dampers, oil dampers, and inverted-pendulum adaptive tuned mass damper (ATMD): Installed as appropriate; and ${\bullet}$ Foundation system: Piled raft foundation, soil cement earth-retaining wall construction, and beer bottle shaped high-strength CFT piles.
This paper presents a novel electrostatic drop-on-demand inkjet device featured by a MEMS fabricated pole-type and hole-type nozzle with tube shaped orifice and investigates the feasibility of applying the inkjet device to display fabrication process. The electric voltage signal applied to the ring shaped upper electrode plate, against the hole-shaped ground or pole-shaped ground, referred here pole-type and hole-type nozzle respectively, allows ejection of small droplet to take place: That is, a tiny droplet is taken away from the peak of the mountain shaped liquid meniscus formed at the nozzle orifice. It is verified experimentally that the use of the pole type nozzle allows a stable and sustainable micro-dripping mode of droplet ejection for a wider range of applied voltages and of liquid viscosities. This demonstrates a feasibility of electrostatic drop-on-demand inkjet device as a disruptive alternative to conventional print heads such as thermal bubble or piezoelectric inkjet heads.

We investigated the effects of scintillation crystal surface treatment on gamma camera imaging. The NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl) (20 mm (dia.) $\times10mm$ (thick) plate) scintillators were chosen for this study. Two different surface treatments, white and black reflectors, were applied to NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl). The optical properties of generated scintillation light were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation and postion sensitive photo multiplier tube (PSPMT). We measured sensitivity, energy resolution and spatial resolution of a gamma camera system with the scintillators coupled to a PSPMT. Based on the results, we concluded that the careful consideration of surface treatments of the scintillator was necessary in order to develop the gamma camera having good sensitivity and spatial resolution.
The application of analytical model(Archer et al. 1983) to shielding calculations in diagnostic radiology combined with measurements of the broad beam transmission properties of lead, steel, concrete, and plate glass for x-ray tube potential of 60-140 kVp using an x-ray inverter generator and total initial beam filtration sufficient to provide half-valve layer representative of those found in common practice and required by regulatory agencies. Our transmission measurements and numerical fits to the mathematical model of broad beam transmission(Archer et al. 1983) will assist medical or health physicist faced with the task of designing protective barriers for medical diagnostic x-ray facilities.

Results obtained from six secological tests for diagnosing bovine brucellosis-standard plate agglutination test (SPT), standard tube agglutination test(STT), complement fixation test(CFT), Rivanol test (RT), agar gel precipitation test (AGP) and counterimmunoelectrophoresis(CIEP) were compared using 38 sera from brucella reactors and 222 sera from dairy and beef cattle in field. The SPT gave 1.6% apparent false negative reactions and 15.4% apparent false positive reactions when compared with STT which is an official test for bovine brucellosis in this country. The distribution of antibody titers determined by STT showed that 37.5% of 38 reactors had antibody titers ranging from 100 to 200, and the remaining 62.5% had antibody titers of 400 or higher. when 38 reactor judged by STT were tested by CFT and RT, 32 cattle(82.4%) were positive by CFT and 33 cattle (86.8%) were positive by RT, respectively. This results suggest that RT is comparable to CFT in the diagnosis of bovine brucellosis. The results also indicated that both AGP and CIEP were insensitive to detect brucella infection in cattle.
In this paper, an investigation of a room temperature active magnetic regenerative refrigerator is carried out. Experimental apparatus includes two active magnetic regenerators containing 186 g of Gd spheres. Four E-type thermocouples are installed inside the Active magnetic regenerator(AMR) to observe the instantaneous temperature variation of AMR. Both warm and cold heat exchangers are designed for large temperature span. The cold heat exchanger, which separates the two AMRs, employs a copper tube with length of 80 mm and diameter of 6.35 mm. In order to minimize dead volume between the warm heat exchanger and AMRs, the warm heat exchangers are located close to the AMRs. The deionized water is used as a heat transfer fluid, and maximum 1.4 T magnetic field is supplied by Halbach array of permanent magnets. The AMR plate, which contains the warm and the cold heat exchangers and the AMRs, has reciprocating motion using a linear actuator and each AMR is alternatively magnetized and demagnetized by a Halbach array of permanent magnet. Since the gap of the Halbach array of permanent magnets is 25 mm and two warm heat exchangers have the motion through it, a compact printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is used as a warm heat exchanger. A maximum no-load temperature span of 26.8 K and a maximum cooling power of 33 W are obtained from the fabricated Active Magnetic Regenerative Refrigerator (AMRR).
