  • Long-range guided wave inspection is a new emerging technology for rapidly and globally inspecting a large area of a structure from a single test location. This paper describes a general overview of the guided wave properties and its application for long-range inspection of structures the principle and instrument system for a guided wave inspection technology called "magnetostrictive sensor (MsS)" that generates and detects guided waves electromagnetically in the material under testing, and examples of long-range guided wave inspection of structures that can be accomplished using the MsS.

Simulation and Analysis of ECT Signals Obtained at Tubesheet and Tube Expansion Area

  • Steam generator (SG) tubes are expanded inside tubesheet holes by using explosive or hydraulic methods to be fixed in a tubesheet. In the tube expansion process, it is important to minimize the crevice gap between expanded tube and tube sheet. In this paper, absolute and differential signals are computed by a numerical method for several different locations of tube expansion inside and outside a tubesheet and signal variations due to tubesheet, tube expansion and operating frequencies are observed. Results show that low frequency is good for detecting tubesheet location in both types of signals and high frequency is suitable for sizing of tube diameter as well as the detection of transition region. Also learned is that the absolute signal is good for measuring tube diameter, while the differential signal is good for locating the top of tubesheet and both ends of the transition region. In the case of mingled anomaly with tube expansion and tubesheet, low frequency inspection is found to be useful to analyze the mixed signal.

  • This paper describes evaluation of oxidation stability for diesel engine oils by Hot-tube oxidation tester at high temperature. Evaluation was rated by visual inspection of lacquer in capillary glass tube and TAN determination of used oil. Air, NO$_2$-air and SO$_2$-air mixed gases were used as oxidizing gas. One oil which has low oxidation stability is selected and reformulated by addition of some additives such as antioxidant, detergent and disperant to improve oxidation stability. As a results of reformulation, antioxidant and detergent was effective for improvement of high temperture oxidation stability on diesel engine oil.

  • There have been little reports on the degradation of medium-carbon steel tubes served at high temperature for a long period. The purpose of this research was to provide the information of the proper replacement span of the tubes with the new ones. We investigated the medium-carbon steel tubes which were used at petrochemical plant for about 50,000 hrs to examine their mechanical properties and microstructures. Experimental results showed that the tubes satisfied the specification of ASTM despite such a long period of service, but mechanical properties, especially charpy impact values, were reduced. It concludes that the tubes on service at the plants needs a periodical inspection.

Detectability evaluation of the loose parts in steam generator by eddy current testing techniques

  • Detectability of the loose parts (LPs) in steam generator (SG) was studied with eddy current testing technique such as X-probe, bobbin and rotating coils ($MRPC^{(R)}$) as a function of LP size and spacing between LP and tube or between LP and support structures. SG mockup simulating SG tube and support structures with LP was fabricated. The X-probe showed slightly better detectability than $MRPC^{(R)}$ for LP of ferrous (F-LP) material and vice versa for LP of nonferrous (NF-LP) material. In terms of feasibility, inspection rate and other predictable features of the SG tubing inspections, X-probe can be used reliably for monitoring the LPs and the flaws formed by LPs on SG tubes.

원자력발전 고방사선구역 소구경 노즐에 대한 자동화검사 기술 (Automatic Inspection Technology for Small Bore Penetration Nozzle in High Radiation Area of Nuclear Power Plant)

  • 원자력발전소의 노후화에 따른 이종금속용접부에서 결함 발생 사례가 지속적으로 보고되고 있으며, 국내에서도 원자력발전소 가동연수 증가에 따라 이종금속부에 결함 발생도 점점 증가할 것으로 판단된다. 국내에서는 증기발생기 배수 노즐 이종금속용접부, 원자로냉각재계통(RCS) 고온관 시료 채취 노즐에서 결함 사례가 보고되었고, 원자력발전소의 인력 접근이 제한적인 고방사선구역 내 소구경 노즐의 이종금속용접부에 대한 검사 시 인력 투입을 최소화 하는 신뢰성 있는 자동화 비파괴검사 가능 기술 및 시스템 개발 필요성이 증대되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 원자력발전소의 소구경 노즐 결함 검출을 위해 1) beam simulation을 통한 최적 검사 탐촉자 설계, 2) 소구경 이종용접부 검사용 multi-directions UT 최적 검사기술, 3) 원격제어 automatic inspection system을 개발하였으며, 표준결함시편을 이용하여 개발된 기술 및 시스템의 결함 검출능을 검증하였다. 개발된 최적기술과 시스템은 실제 발전소에서 발생된 결함 (RCS 고온관 시료 채취 노즐)에 대한 검사에 적용하여 결함을 검출함으로써 개발 검사 기술 및 시스템의 적합성이 검증되었다. 개발된 기술은 원전의 다양한 소구경 건전성 평가에 활용함으로써 원자력발전 안전성 확보에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

수축모드 변화에 따른 대퇴사두근의 근 활성도와 근 피로도에 관한 연구 (A study on the Muscle Activity and Fatigue between Quadriceps Femoris Muscle during the Mode Shift of Contraction)

  • 본 논문에서는 등장성 수축(isotonic contraction)시 연령에 따른 변화의 추이 등을 알아보기 위해 일상생활에서 주로 사용하는 대퇴사두근의 근 활성도(muscle activity)와 근 피로도(muscle fatigue) 해석에 관한 연구를 하였다. 실험은 남자 20대와 50대 각 10명씩을 대상으로 무릎 확장운동으로 각 피 실험자가 할 수 있는 최대 부하(1RM)를 측정한 다음 그 부하의 20-90%부하를 차례로 증가 시키면서 대퇴사두근(Quadriceps Femoris :QF)은 내측광근(vastus medialis : VM), 대퇴직근(rectus femoris : RF), 외측광근(vastus lateralis : VL) 등을 각각 근전도 신호를 추출하고, 수축, 이완모드에서 각속도를 측정하였다. 20대와 50대의 속도를 비교분석한 결과 대퇴사두근의 20대 근육에서는 (p < 0.89)로 50대에서는 (p < 0.70)로 유의차가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 생체 동역학 연구와 체육 분야의 선수 훈련방법, 산업분야에서 상해방지와 근육부상방지, 재활의약분야의 부상치료 등에 응용할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

  • In this paper, we propose a tube-hole center detection vision algorithm verifying the position of a tele-controlled robot and providing visual information for increasing reliability and efficiency in the diagnosis of steam generator (SG) tubes in nuclear power plant. A tele-controlled robot plays a role in carrying the probe used in inspecting the integrity of SG tubes. Thus accurately locating a tele-controlled robot on the desired tube-hole center is important issue for reliability of inspection. To do this work, we have to find the tube-hole center locations from the input image. At first, we apply the three-class segmentation method modified for this application. WE extract minimum bounding rectangles (MBRs) in the theresholded binary image. Second, for discriminating between MBR by tube and MBR by noise, we introduce the MBR rejection rules as knowledge-based rule set. MBRs are divided into the very dark region MBRs and the very bright region MBRs. In order to describe the region of complete tube-hole, the MBRs need a process of pairing each other. We then can find the tube-hole center from the paired MBR. For more accurately finding the tube-hole center in several sequential images, the centers of some frames need to be averaged. We tested the performance of our method using hundreds of real images.

함정용 패키지 에어콘 응축기 핀튜브(Cu-Ni 70/30) 누설파괴 원인 분석 (Failure Analysis of Condenser Fin Tubes of Package Type Air Conditioner for Navy Vessel)

  • In 2015, a fin tube (Cu-Ni 70/30 alloy) of package type heat exchanger for navy vessel was perforated through the wall which led to refrigerant leakage. This failure occurred after only one year since its installation. In this study, cause of the failure was determined based on available documents, metallographic studies and computational fluid dynamics simulation conducted on this fin tube. The results showed that dimensional gap between inserted plastic tube and inside wall of fin tube is the cause of the swirling turbulent stream of sea water. As a result of combination of swirling turbulence and continuing collision of hard solid particles in sea water, erosion corrosion has begun at the end of inserted plastic tube area. Crevice corrosion followed later in the crevice between the outer wall of plastic tube and inner wall of fin tube. It was found that other remaining tubes also showed the same corrosion phenomena. Thorough inspection and prompt replacement will have to be accomplished for the fin tubes of the same model heat exchanger.
