  • In this paper, the design criteria of future container crane for megaships are investigated. The current loading/unloading capacity of a typical container crane, roughly 30 moves/hr, is too law to meet the requirements of future super containerships, which are expected over 15,000 TEU. After examining the transition of containerships through the years and studying the research trend in developed countries, the specifications of the container crane that can Meet a 15,000 TEU containership are proposed. The structure, trolley and hoist mechanism, outreach, backreach, capacity, speeds, durability, and stability of the future container crane are described.

  • This paper is concerned with automation of tower cranes in view of the robust control of tower crane during take-off, load hoisting, load lowering and landing. The model equation of the tower crane is induced by using Lagrange's equation and it is linearized at equillibrium point. The control is realized by adopting the optimal regulator method. The effectiveness is proved through the experimental results for the oscillation control of cargo rope and the position controls of trolley and boom by the implementation of digital control using 16 bits microcomputer for the designed optimal control law.

  • In this paper, a simulator is designed along with S/W package for crane controllers. Due to trolley's acceleration or deceleration, cranes inherently cause swing motion of the objects in transporting heavy objects. This swing not only deteriorates the crane handling safety but also increases the processing time. To overcome these drawbacks, the fuzzy rule-based simulator is developed with inhibitory swing at final action. The computer simulation shows that the swing at initial and final positions is removed fast with small position error. The proposed simulator can be used for handling object stablely and the study of effectiveness in unmanned operation of cranes.

  • This paper presents an algorithm to control the undesirable sway of a suspended load in the crane system that has a trade-off between positioning the load and suppressing the sway of the load. The aim is to transport the load to a specified place with small sway angle as quickly as possible. Dynamic model is based on a simple pendulum driven by a velocity drive that is mostly used for actuating a trolley in industry. Proposed algorithm is composed of two parts : one is a off-line optimal trajectory generator, the other on-line tracking control. The former produces optimal trajectories minimizing energy under the speed constraint of velocity drive. The latter controls outputs to track the generated trajectories. Digital simulations and experiments are performed on a pilot crane to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control algorithm.

  • During the operation of crane system in container yard, the objective is to transport the load to a goal position as quick as possible without rope oscillation. The container crane is generally operated by an expert operator, but recently an automatic control system with high speed and rapid transportation is required. Therefore, we developed an optimal controller which has to control the crane system with disturbances. In this paper, we present a design of optima 2-DOF PID controller for the control of gantry crane which has to control swing motion and trolley position. We used evolution strategy(ES) to tune the parameters of 2-DOF PID controller. It was compared with general PID controller. The computer simulations show that the proposed method has better performances than the other method.

  • An urban railway power substation consists of three thyristor dual converters. Two converters are connected to up and down trolley line to supply the electric energy or feed the regenerative energy back to the distribution. When the two converters break down, the remaining converter is used in an emergency. One thyristor dual converter system (TDCS) manages the energy of two or three railway stations. If the TDCS fails, the trains stop operating. To solve the problem, this paper proposes the three parallel operation control algorithm of thyristor dual converter system using the emergency converter. The broken TDCS can be replaced by the emergency converter in other TDCS. The effectiveness of this proposed control is verified by simulation.

  • Productivity of container cranes and gantry cranes is influenced by the performance of crane hardware and cycle time. Cycle time in container handling is influenced by the path of containers and relative positioning of containers. So we have to minimize the sway of containers and spreaders to minimize relative positioning time. And sway minimization is influenced by the skill of workers in manual gantry cranes. In this paper, we will develop anti-sway system using mechanical and electrical method. Proposed hybrid system uses the basic structure of general manual gantry crane. So, it is very useful and effective. Electrical methods are main methods and mechanical methods are auxiliary methods.

  • Yard cranes are very useful equipments for handing of heavy containers, But rope-driven yard cranes must have a little of sway and skew motion because ropes are passive mechanical device. Therefore rope-driven yard cranes require skilled drivers to depress sway and skew motions. So many researches have been concentrated on anti-sway and anti-skew algorithm controlling trolley speed or rope tension. Although many efforts, the rope-driven method is not proper to an automated yard equipment because of sway and skew motion. This paper will propose a new concept yard crane which has a new structure, overcomes defects of rope-driven cranes and is proper to automation. And we will study its actuality

  • In conventional automatic container-terminal, the gantry cranes are operated manually or semi-automatically. But UGC is an unmanned-operated gantry crane and the positioning information for UGC is supplied only by position-measuring devices. In order to enhance the operation efficiency of UGC, it is required that the position-measuring devices have long maintenance period and are not sensitive to the weather and environment condition. And in order to be used practically in container terminal, the cost of position-measuring devices is not higher than currently used measuring devices. In the study, it is discussed the requirements for position-measuring devices in UGC, And it is studied on the measuring devices suitable to UGC. From this study, it is expected that the combination of a rotary encoder and a ferrous metal detector is useful for position-measuring devices in UGC.
