  • The recent outbreak of corona virus (COVID-19) infectious disease had made its forecasting critical cornerstones in most scientific studies. This study adopts a machine learning based time series model - Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model to forecast COVID-19 confirmed cases in Botswana over 60 days period. Findings of the study show that COVID-19 confirmed cases in Botswana are steadily rising in a steep upward trend with random fluctuations. This trend can also be described effectively using an additive model when scrutinized in Seasonal Trend Decomposition method by Loess. In selecting the best fit ARIMA model, a Grid Search Algorithm was developed with python language and was used to optimize an Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) metric. The best fit ARIMA model was determined at ARIMA (5, 1, 1), which depicted the least AIC score of 3885.091. Results of the study proved that ARIMA model can be useful in generating reliable and volatile forecasts that can used to guide on understanding of the future spread of infectious diseases or pandemics. Most significantly, findings of the study are expected to raise social awareness to disease monitoring institutions and government regulatory bodies where it can be used to support strategic health decisions and initiate policy improvement for better management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • This study investigates the effects of the dynamics of the firm's reputation on performance. Particularly, we argued that not only the level of reputation but also the trend and volatility of reputation plays an important role in formulating the stakeholders' perception about the firm. From our empirical analysis of the U.S. venture capital firms between 1990 and 2010, we found that the level and trend of reputation are positively related to performance and that these relationships are weakened when the volatility of reputation increases. This paper discusses the theoretical contributions and practical implications of these findings.

  • Purpose: As one of the continuous studies on the offline distribution industry, the purpose of this study is to find ways for offline stores to respond to the growth of online shopping by identifying research trends on department stores. Research design, data and methodology: To this end, this study conducted word frequency analysis, word co-occurrence frequency analysis, BERTopic, LDA, and dynamic topic modeling using Python 3.7 on a total of 551 English abstracts searched with the keyword 'department store' in scienceON as of October 10, 2022. Results: The results of word frequency analysis and co-occurrence frequency analysis revealed that research related to department stores frequently focuses on factors such as customers, consumers, products, satisfaction, services, and quality. BERTopic and LDA analyses identified five topics, including 'store image,' with 'shopping information' showing relatively high interest, while 'sales systems' were observed to have relatively lower interest. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that research related to department stores has so far been conducted in a limited scope, and it is insufficient to provide clues for department stores to secure competitiveness against online platforms. Therefore, it is suggested that additional research be conducted on topics such as the true role of department stores in the retail industry, consumer reinterpretation, customer value and lifetime value, department stores as future retail spaces, ethical management, and transparent ESG management.

  • This paper reviews research outputs in Korea Journal of Population Studies (KJPS) and the changes in their contents during the period of 1977-2004. In the early years of KJPS, various types of outputs were published, but changes have been made into a direction that research articles compose the main context of the journal. As the journal published twice a year, the total number of articles of the journal shows a trend of marked rise. An analysis of the themes of articles shows that the trend of research in Korean demography has changed hand in hand with transformations of the Korean society. The traditional topics such as population policy, fertility, mortality, and migration were popular before. Labor force, nuptiality, family, aging, regional studies are found to be more popular themes of research recently. Reflecting academic and social demands, KJPS has a broaden range of authors, such as professor, researcher, a government employee, post-doc, and graduate students. The articles written by those working in universities have increased continuously, while research outputs of research institutes have decreased recently. The data for analysis used in articles are varied from but concentrated in some materials - census, vital statistics and various survey data. In early years of KJPS, relatively simple techniques of analysis were adopted in the majority of articles. However, more sophisticated techniques including applied regression analysis, logistic analysis and analysis of survival ratio turn out to be more popular recently. Finally, several suggestions for the future research are presented in this paper.

  • This study analyzes the trend of domestic research related to science writing education. The subjects of analysis were 152 research papers related to science writing education in Korea from 2004 to 2021. The analysis criteria were set as the research problem, research subject, research method and research application etc. Result of the analysis shows a steady increase until 2014, but decreased afterwards. In the result of the research problems, it was found that most studies were about finding out the effects of scientific writing activities. The research subjects were mostly elementary, middle, and high school students. Qualitative research occupied a large proportion in the results of the research method analysis, and there were many mixed studies that combined quantitative and qualitative research. As for the research application method, the most applied research in regular classes. As a result of analyzing the effect of application, most of the studies were on science concepts, attitudes towards science, thinking skills, and creative problem-solving skills. Writing education such as experimental and observational writing in science classes has been steadily conducted since before the introduction of the 2007 revised curriculum. In particular, the importance of scientific writing as a text-based education is being emphasized from the 2007 revised curriculum to the 2022 revised curriculum overview. Writing is an important learning strategy in science education for students to generate, share, explain, and expand their ideas. Therefore, examining domestic research trends related to science writing education can provide important basic data for setting the future direction of science writing education.

  • Despite improvements in vaccine coverage, a resurgence of measles has been reported, especially in the infant and adult populations in recent years. We conducted a systematic review of seroprevalence studies conducted in the Western Pacific Region (WPR) to provide insights into seropositivity trends in different countries. This systematic review aimed to collect data from all available measles seroprevalence studies to characterize the differences in population immunity against measles in different countries. We searched the online databases PubMed and Embase to identify: 1) observational studies that investigated seroprevalence in all age groups, and 2) results reported as antibody levels. The following variables were extracted from different study arms: paper identification (title, first author, publication year), inclusion and exclusion criteria, study site, age of subjects, number of subjects, country/area, population, methods, and seropositivity (%). The search yielded a total of 69 studies included in the review. Among the 1-6-year-old group, seropositivity remained relatively high, at 81-100% in China, 86-94% in Korea, and 77-91% in Australia. In adolescents aged 7-18-years old, seropositivity was relatively constant in China and Australia over time; however, a decreasing trend was noted in Korea in 2011 (66%), 2014 (69%), and 2014 (50%) in this age group. A similar downward trend was observed among Korean adults aged 19-39 years in 2011 (74%), 2019 (71%), and 2019 (64%). Children are likely to be protected by universal vaccination programs in WPR countries and regions. However, susceptible individuals with waned immunity may be present among the adult population.
