  • This study is purposed to investigate the role of grasses as the Green Foundation effect on the visual preference to flowering tree and shrub being the principal elements of natural landscape early in the spring. As the flowering shrub materials, Rhododendron mucronulatum and Forsythia Kreana were adopted. Total 48 slides were photographed at the 8 different lawn areas with the 6 planting combinations of flowering shrub materials, and 10 landscape variables - dimensional and color - were measured and preference scores were taken by slide evaluations. The results were : 1) The visual preference to the landscape of flowering shrub in the lawn area was changed with the different lawn situations. 2) With important 4 variables, multilinear regression model was established, hence Y =40.4 + 9.6($X_1$) -7.8($X_2$) -26.8($X_3$) + 15.2($X_4$) where, Y : estimated preference score $X_1$: perimeter of flower zone $X_2$: value of green covered zone $X_3$: hue of green covered zone $X_4$: chroma of green covered zone 3) Most effective variable was 'hue of green covered zone', hence the more green the lawn area ism the more preferred landscape or the more effective green foundation is.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate ways to control the wind dispersal of contton-wrapped seeds of such poplars and willows as Poplus alba, P. tomentiglandulosa, P. euramericana, P. deltoides, and Salix pseudo-lasiogyne. These trees are hated by many people because of their seeds blowing all over the place during May. These cottony seeds can be nuisance to various types of outdoor activities, pose safely threat to drivers, become fire hazards during prolonged spring dry spells, and cause many types of health hazards of allergy such as sneezing. rhinitis, asthma, and skin rashes. Four control methods can be used to resolve the problem. First, pruning can be a solution, but it is unsatisfactory in terms of costs and outcome. Second, planting of male trees only can be a solution, but it is hard to identify sexes of saplings. Third, female trees can he replaced with other species. But it requires high costs and takes at least ten years to functionally replace the removed ones. As an alternative to such unsatisfactory control methods, the possibility of applying plant growth regulators has been investigated since 1983. During the pre-test, various concentrations and mixtures of them were either sprayed or injected, but failed to achieve any promising results. But the injection of a mixture made up of 0.75g of 2-chloroethane phosphonic acid with 0.2 mg of GA in 300cc water in the end of March produced premature falling of almost all aments and capsules of treated poplars and willows. It was found that the effect of the injection lasts two years. The results of the main experiment of 1987 can be summarized as follows ; First, the injection of the mixture of 2-chloroethane phosphonic acid and GA increases the premature abscisin of aments and capsules, thus reducing the wind dispersal of the cottony seeds of S. pseudolasiogyne, P. tomentiglandulosa, and P. euramericana 1644.09, 1200.61, and 1485.11 times, respectively, than that of the naural abscisin, It is estimated that the average number of wind-blown seeds reduced are approximatively 6,185,100, 4062,900, and 2,830,670 per tree, respectively. Second, the treatment causes no observable side effects on the growth of the samples tested.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the backgrounds and spatial characteristics of the sericulture in the rear garden of the palace in Joseon Dynasty. Joseon Dynasty made the various efforts not only to enhance the promotion of agriculture but also sericulture since the main industry of Joseon Dynasty was farming. At the very beginning, Joseon Dynasty planted mulberry trees and built a silkworm-raising room(蠶室) around the Donggung(東宮). Then, King Sungjong(成宗) made Chaesangdan(採桑壇) in Changgyeong Palace and performed Chinzamryae(親蠶禮). The location of Chaesangdan varied as time goes on until the king Gwanghaegun(光海君). Lastly, King Yeongjo(英祖) made Chaesangdan and Junghaechinzambi(丁亥親蠶碑) in Gyeongbok Palace. Yeongjo(英祖) showed a strong attachment to Gyeongbok Palace and actively encouraged the sericulture. Chaesangdan was built in the east side of the palace which was appropriate for planting mulberry trees. Furthermore, a silkworm-raising room was located in this place at the era of King Sejong(世宗).

  • In this work, in order to quantitatively predict the radiation flux and propose an idea about how to reduce the radiation damage, the radiation flux caused by pool fire of an LNG storage tank has been calculated using the RISC (Risk and Industrial Safety Consultant) proposed model under various conditions. Model predictions showed that the most important parameter affecting the radiation flux by the LNG pool fire is the wind speed. The extent of radiation damage to a target from fire flame was more significant with variation of wind speed at a low wind speed than with that at a high wind speed. It was found that the radiation damage by the former is substantially reduced with planting windbreak system around the plant. Since the windbreak is most economical than any other method, it is strongly suggested to plant a tree belt in the factory surroundings, especially near by the area of gas storage facilities, linking with water cooling and fire protection systems.

  • In this study, warmth and cold-indices were calculated from the climatic records for 30 year from 1931 to 1960 observed at the 80 weather stations as illustrated in Table 1 and Figs. 4 and 5. Iso-warmth index and iso-cold index lines were carefully tracked. However, subjectivity might be involved in this delimitation. The well recognized phenomena of phenology, the natural distribution of specified tree species and potentially cultivable zones of some species of economic importance were discussed with regard to these indices. It is seemed that the forest zones of Korea accepted commonly by foresters and researchers were more rationally matched with the cold indices rather than warmth indices. The forest improvement works by introduction, planting works and other related fields could be refered to these data.

  • We analyzed the profitability of Korea's forestry by evaluating stumpage prices of the main economic tree species. Stumpage prices are evaluated with a market value formula, subtracting logging and transporting costs from market prices of logs. If trees are sold at the current cutting age, the stumpage price of larch is about 4.5 million KRW per hectare and that of Korean pine is about 3.7 million KRW per hectare. The stumpage prices do not cover reforestation cost, which is about 6.1 million KRW per hectare. If government subsidies did not support the cost of reforestation and silviculture, there would be no profits at all. The cost of forestry is very high in terms of planting and silviculture. In the future, the prices of logs are not predicted to rise and the wages for labor are not predicted to fall. Without reforming the current forestry regime, Korean forestry is, thus, not sustainable. Therefore, low-cost forestry efforts like natural regeneration should be adopted to make forestry viable. Investments in forestry infrastructure like forest roads are also required to decrease the timber logging and transporting costs.

  • With the fast development of modern society, the interests concerned about the significance of nature and environment become major issue nowadays. Especially, threats for our health due to severe environmental pollution and fine dusts become serious problem with the fast industrialization of our society, and extra attention is focused on interests about conservation of nature and management of forest resources. Precious forest resources, however, are not properly managed and destroyed vainly due to frequent fire, damage by storms and floods, and unplanned land development. So systematic and scientific construction and management of forest resources are required in order to solve these problems efficiently. Furthermore, implementation of the forest resource information database that contains information of trees, Topography, ecosystem of the forest is urgently needed. In this paper, we design and implement the forest resource information database based on the information of location based forest resources and Topography using forest images taken by a drone, that enables us to manage forest resources efficiently, make decision for logging, and construct a future tree-planting project easily.

  • This study evaluated the species composition, diversity and phorophyte preference of epiphytes at the University of Port Harcourt located in southern part of Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was used to select sites representing major avenues in the three campuses (Abuja, Choba and Delta) of the University. Data were collected on species name of phorophytes, number of individuals, diameter at breast height (dbh) and height, and species/number of epiphytes present on them. The points/sections of attachment of epiphytes on phorophytes were also recorded. A total of eight species of epiphyte belonging to six families were recorded in the study. Species diversity was higher in Abuja campus (Simpson 1-D=0.81; Shannon H=1.79), followed by Choba campus (Simpson 1-D=0.73; Shannon H=1.09) and Delta campus (Simpson 1-D=0.56; Shannon H=0.93). Species richness was highest in Abuja campus (n=8) followed by Delta campus (n=4) and Choba campus (n=3). Similarity in epiphyte species composition was highest between Choba and Delta campuses (85.71%), followed by Delta and Abuja campuses (66.67%) and lowest between Choba and Abuja campuses (54.55%). The family-Polypodiaceae, had the highest number of species (n=3). Microgramma owariensis had the highest relative abundance (27%) followed by Platycerium bifurcatum (26%) while Tillandsia utriculata and Peperomia pellucida had the least relative abundance (3%). Epiphyte abundance was weakly correlated with both the dbh and height of phorophytes. However, epiphytes were more abundant on phorophytes with rough/scaly/corky/flaky barks than on those with smooth barks. The planting of avenue tree species with rough barks is recommended to enhance the diversity of epiphytes in the study area.

  • Background and objective: Particulate matter (PM) is one of the serious environmental problems and threatens human health. Plants can clean the air by removing PM from the atmosphere. This study was carried out to investigate the PM removal efficiency of 12 species of woody plants. Methods: Actinidia arguta, Dendropanax morbiferus, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Pittosporum tobira, Rhaphiolepis indica, Rhapis, Salix integra, Salix koreensis, Schisandra chinensis, Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki, and Vitis coignetiae were used as plant material. Six 15 cm (D) pots were placed in an acrylic chamber of 800 (D) × 800 (W) × 1000 (H) mm. The LED panel was used as a light source. The reduction of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 for 300 minutes after the injection of PM was automatically measured. Results: The leaf area and the amount of PM in the chamber showed a negative correlation. 12 species of plants were compared by dividing the plants into 3 groups according to their characteristics: vines, trees, and shrubs and small trees. In the vine plant group, the averages of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were 7.917%, 8.796%, and 30.275%, respectively. In the shrubs and small trees group, the average of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were 10.142%, 11.133%, and 36.448%, respectively. In the trees group, the average of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were 11.475%, 12.892%, and 40.421%, respectively. When the initial concentration was 100%, PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 of Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki with the largest leaf area were 5.6%, 6.3%, and 21.0% after 5 hours, respectively, the best results among 12 species of plants. Conclusion: The vine plant group was more effective in removing PM than the other two groups. In the tree groups, the fact that the leaf development was relatively inactive at a plant height of 30 cm was considered to have an effect on the removal of particulate matter.

  • As a part of improving the effect of stream restoration, the study selected 90 domestic natural streams that are not damaged and researched their riparian vegetations. Among them, the results of streams, whose naturalized ratio were more than 5 % and valley type flood plains were not developed, were excluded. By using the results of final 49 streams, plant communities and companion species that commonly appeared in high frequency, depending on stream type, were drawn. The result revealed that Quercus mongolica community, Hemiptelea davidii community and Salix koreensis community were representative in the mid-northern district (latitude: N $37{\sim}37.9^{\circ}$) with Salix koreensis community in the central district (latitude: N $36{\sim}36.9^{\circ}$) and Quercus serrata community in the southern district (latitude: $34{\sim}35.9^{\circ}$). For the stream type depending on altitude, Quercus serrata community and Phragmites japonica community were representative in the altitude of 200~500 m and there was no stream, in which flood plain is developed naturally, in the altitude of more than 500 m. In addition, the study drew representative communities depending on width of stretches of water at mean water level indicating the size of stream. Quercus serrata community was major vegetation at sites which are less than 20 m wide and Salix koreensis community was common at sites which are more than 20 m and less than 100 m wide of stretches of water at mean water level. Meanwhile the major vegetations at sites which are more than 100 m wide were Salix koreensis community, Morus bombycis community and Salix nipponica community. The study selected the kind of tree for planning riparian forest in flood plain by stream type on the basis of the result and suggested tree planting pattern that can be used in actual work by referring to the result of hydraulic review.
