Comparing NDVI to maximum latewood density of annual tree rings in a boreal coniferous forest in North China

  • In boreal conifers in China's Northeast area, maximum latewood density (MXD) of tree-ring varies in response to growing season temperature. Forest net productivity can be estimated using the Normalized-difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from satellite sensor data. MXD from the Mohe site in this area was compared with estimates of NPP for 1982-1999 produced by the NDVI model, which was established based on the relationship of leaf area index (LAI) and NDVI. The result shows that the MXD series correlated significantly with the NDVI model estimates series, suggesting that MXD appeared to be an appropriate index for productivity or canopy growth in region where forest productivity is strongly temperature-related.

Effect of Sowing Time on Germination and Early Seedling Growth of Quercus floribunda Lindl.

  • Quercus floribunda (Tilonj oak) is among the five species of Quercus and an evergreen tree found in Kumaun Himalayan region. Timing of germination is a crucial event determining the success of seedling establishment and survival. The aims of the study were to investigate the effect of sowing date on the germination and morphological responses of Tilonj oak (Quercus floribunda), cultivated during the month of August-September, with supplementary irrigation. The experiment was conducted by sowing seeds at two dates with one month interval in glass house conditions at DSB Campus, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India. Present study revealed that higher germination percentage (46.67 %) was recorded at sowing time $S_2$ as compared to the sowing time $S_1$ (32.86 %). Germination percentage as well as seedling growth were affected by sowing date though the differences were insignificant. At both the sowing dates, highest germination percentage was recorded for large seeds (32.86-46.67 %) followed by medium (31.43-33.33 %) and lowest germination (6.67-7.14 %) was recorded for small size seeds. In all parameters assessed, sowing time $S_2$ had the best performance in combination with large seed size. Thus, September is suitable month for best germination, growth and seedling vigour and large seed size is recommended to silviculturists and tree planters. The information on seed germination and seedling growth is vital both for conservation and rehabilitation of degraded lands.

내장산 지역 굴거리나무의 연륜생장과 기후요소와의 관계 (Growth of Daphniphyllum macropodum and Climatic Factors at Mt. Naejang, Korea)

  • 굴거리나무의 연륜생장과 기후와의 관계를 조사하기 위하여 굴거리나무의 분포상 북방한계선 지역인 내장산에서 연륜분석을 실시하였다. 연륜분석을 실시하기 위하여 연자봉 지역에 분포하고 있는 18그루의 굴거리나무에서 생장편을 각 2개씩 채취하였다. 굴거리나무의 연륜을 분석한 결과 마스터 연대기의 연대 구간은 1915년부터 생장편의 채취시기인 1998년으로 작성되었으며, 생장이 매우 저조했던 시기는 1920년, 1932년, 1934년, 1937년, 1942번, 1946년, 1964년, 1969년, 1985년으로 나타났다. 반응 함수를 이용하여 연륜 지수와 기후요소와의 관계를 분석한 결과, 8월 및 9월 강수량과 음의 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 굴거리나무의 생장이 8월 및 9월 강수량과 음의 관계를 갖는 것은 이 시기에 강수량이 많아 상대적으로 일사량이 적어지고 적은 일사량은 광합성량을 감소시켜 굴거리나무의 생장에 부정적인 영향을 미쳤기 때문인 것으로 추정된다.

임간재배지 내 부엽토 및 차광수준에 따른 갯기름나물의 광합성과 엽생장 특성 (Characteristics of Photosynthesis and Leaf Growth of Peucedanum japonicum by Leaf Mold and Shading Level in Forest Farming)

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the photosynthesis response and leaf characteristics of Peucedanum japonicum growing in forest farming. The experiment was performed by leaf mold (pine tree and chestnut tree) and shading levels (0%, 35%, 50% and 75% shading). Light relative intensity was 100% (full sunlight), 60.3% (35% shading), 35.1% (50% shading), and 17.4% (75% shading) respectively. Light response curves of pine-leaf mold and chestnut-leaf mold were the highest in control (full sunlight) and these were getting lower in the higher shading level. Photosynthesis capacity and light saturation point were indicated higher in chestnut-leaf mold within the same shading level. As the shading level increased, maximum photosynthesis rate decreased. And apparent quantum yield was not indicated statistically significant difference from all treatment. Leaf area, leaf length and leaf width were significant higher in 35% shading and control under chestnut-leaf mold in all treatment. As the shading level increased, LAR (leaf area ratio), SLA (specific leaf area) and SPAD value decreased in pine-leaf mold and chestnut-leaf mold. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, P. japonicum is judged better growth and higher yield by maintaining 35% shading (relative light intensity 60%) under chestnut-leaf mold in forest farming.

균근연구(菌根硏究)의 농림업(農林業)에의 응용(應用) (Application of Mycorrhizal Research to Agriculture and Forestry)

  • Recently mycorrhizal research has been one of the most fast-growing research areas in modern plant science and microbiology. The application potential of mycorrhizal techniques to agriculture and forestry is enormous in view of the ubiquitous nature of mycorrhizae and known benefits of mycorrhizae to host plants. Unfortunately, very few scientists in Korea are currently involved in mycorrhizal research. When a team of American plant pathologists visited Korea in September 1982 to participate in the Korea-U.S.A. Joint Seminar on Forest Diseases and Insect Pests, they were surprised by the principal author's statement that there was no single research project on mycorrhizae sponsored by Korean government or any scientific institutions. The author initiated a few years ago a research project on the ecology of tree mycorrhizae with a foreign financial support. Major areas of interest were survey of ectomycorrhizae in relation to soil fertility, taxonomic distribution of mycorrhizae among woody plants, identification of ectomycorrhizal fungi, and growth response of woody plants to artificial inoculation. In spite of the enormous application potential of mycorrhizae to agronomic plants, the subject of mycorrhizae has not been recognized by Korean agronomists, foresters or pathologists. The purpose of this review rather written in Korean is to introduce the techniques of mycorrhizal research to Korean scientists and to urge them to participate in challenging new scientific field which might bring us a remarkable increase in crop productivity and tree growth through manipulation of this unique symbiosis. In this review, following topics were discussed in the same order: introduction; brief history of mycorrhizal research; morphology and classification of mycorrhizae; distribution of mycorrhizae in plant kingdom and in soil profile; physiology of mycorrhizae (functions, mineral nutrition, mycorrhizal formation); interaction of mycorrhizae with soil-born plant pathogens. mycorrhizae in nitrogen-fixing plants; application of mycorrhizal techniques to nursery practices (isolation, culture, inoculation, and response); prospect in the future.

지리산 천왕봉지역 구상나무의 연륜기후학적 해석 (A Dendroclimatic Analysis on Abies koreana in Cheonwang-bong Area of Mt. Chiri, Korea)

  • 지리산 천왕봉 아고산 지역 (해발 1,600∼l,700m)에 자라는 구상나무의 연륜생장과 기후와의 관계를 북사면(장군봉)과 남사면(중봉)을 대상으로 조사하였다. 각 지역에서 10여 본에서 생장편을 임목당 2개씩을 채취하였다. 채취된 코어는 크로스데이팅후 연륜폭을 측정하여 얻어진 연륜시리즈(연대기)를 표준화한 후, 기후인자(월강수량과 월평균기온)와 연륜생장과의 관계를 반응함수를 이용하여 분석하였다. 반응함수로 즉 월기후인자로 연륜연대기 총변동의 45.9∼53.8%를 설명할 수 있었다. 강수와 연륜생장과의 관계는 중봉과 장군지역 모두에서 3∼5월, 8월에 대해 정의 관계를 보이고 2월과 7월에 대해서는 부의 관계를 나타내 유사한 결과를 보였다. 기온에 대한 관계는 남사면에 위치한 구상나무가 북사면에 위치한 구상나무에 비해 2월과 8월에서 높은 부의 관계를 나타내었으며 4월 기온과는 두 지역 모두 유의한 정의 관계를 나타내었다. 두 사면지역의 구상나무 연륜생장과 기후와의 관계는 전체적으로는 큰 차이를 보여주지 않았다. 아한대 수종의 연륜생장이 강수보다는 기온에 민감하여 월기온과 대체로 정의 관계를 갖는 반면에 지리산 구상나무의 경우는 기온과 부의 관계를 갖는 경향이 크며 강수의 영향 특히 봄기간 동안의 수분수지가 중요한 것으로 생각된다. 구상나무 연륜과 기후와의 유의한 관계를 이용하여 향후 소빙기를 포함하는 장기간의 고기후를 복원할 수 있을 것이다.

오존 환경(環境)이 잡종(雜種) 포플러의 생장(生長)과 기공개폐(氣孔開閉)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Ozone Environmental Stress on Growth and Stomatal Response in the F2 Hybrid Poplar (Populus trichocarpa × Populus deltoides))

  • 오존에 약(弱)하거나 저항성(抵抗性)을 가지는 포플러 개체(個體)를 선발(選拔)하기 위해서 36개의 잡종(雜種)포플러 클론을 오존에 노출(露出)시켰다. Open-top chamber를 이용(利用)하여 하루에 6-8시간, 3개월 동안 90-115ppb의 농도(濃度)로 오존을 노출시켰다. 수고(樹高), 직경(直徑), 엽수(葉數), 물질생산량(物質生産量), root/shoot비율(比率), 낙엽률(落葉率), 기공반응(氣孔反應) 조사(調査)하였다. 수고, 직경, 엽수, 물질생산량, root/shoot비율, 기공 conductance는 오존 때문에 감소(減少)하였고, 낙엽률은 증가(增加)하였다. 이 연구에서는 기공 conductance와 물질생산량과의 관계(關係)는 아주 낮게 나타났다. 오존환경(環境)에 대해서 저항성을 갖는 것은 기공(氣孔)의 개폐(開閉)와 항상(恒常) 관계(關係)가 있는 것은 아니라고 사료(思料)되며, 아마도 생화학적(生化學的)이고 생리적(生理的)인 다른 요인(要因)에 대(對)한 연구(硏究)가 포플러 클론이 갖는 저항성을 이해(理解)하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

빅데이터 분류 기법에 따른 벤처 기업의 성장 단계별 차이 분석 (The Difference Analysis between Maturity Stages of Venture Firms by Classification Techniques of Big Data)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the maturity stages of venture firms through classification analysis, which is widely used as a big data technique. Venture companies should develop a competitive advantage in the market. And the maturity stage of a company can be classified into five stages. I will analyze a difference in the growth stage of venture firms between the survey response and the statistical classification methods. The firm growth level distinguished five stages and was divided into the period of start-up and declines. A classification method of big data uses popularly k-mean cluster analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, artificial neural network, and decision tree analysis. I used variables that asset increase, capital increase, sales increase, operating profit increase, R&D investment increase, operation period and retirement number. The research results, each big data analysis technique showed a large difference of samples sized in the group. In particular, the decision tree and neural networks' methods were classified as three groups rather than five groups. The groups size of all classification analysis was all different by the big data analysis methods. Furthermore, according to the variables' selection and the sample size may be dissimilar results. Also, each classed group showed a number of competitive differences. The research implication is that an analysts need to interpret statistics through management theory in order to interpret classification of big data results correctly. In addition, the choice of classification analysis should be determined by considering not only management theory but also practical experience. Finally, the growth of venture firms needs to be examined by time-series analysis and closely monitored by individual firms. And, future research will need to include significant variables of the company's maturity stages.

저관리 옥상녹화의 식재기반 시스템 차이에 따른 순비기나무의 활용성 평가 (Application Analysis of Vitex rotundifolia by Difference of the Shallow-Extensive Green Roof System)

  • The objectives of this study were to compare the growth of Vitex rotundifolia as affected by the difference of soil depth and mixture ratio in a shallow-extensive green roof module system, and to identify the level of soil thickness and mixture ratio as suitable growing condition to achieve the desired plant growth in green roof. Different soil thickness levels were achieved under 7cm, 15cm and 25cm of shallow-extensive green roof module systems made by woody frame of $500{\times}500{\times}300mm$. Soil mixture ratio were eight types for perlite : peatmoss : leafmold = 7 : 1 : 2 (v/v/v, $P_7P_1L_2$), perlite : peatmoss : leafmold = 6 : 2 : 2 (v/v/v, $P_6P_2L_2$), perlite : peatmoss : leafmold = 5 : 3 : 2 (v/v/v, $P_5P_3L_2$), perlite : peatmoss : leafmold = 4 : 4 : 2 (v/v/v, $P_4P_4L_2$), only sand ($S_{10}$), sand : leafmold = 7 : 3 (v/v, $S_7L_3$), sand : leafmold = 5 : 5 (v/v, $S_5L_5$) and only leafmold ($L_{10}$). The growth response of Vitex rotundifolia had fine and sustain condition in $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$., Especially, in case of $P_6P_2L_2$, growth response appeared to be good even in soil thickness 7cm, which showed low survival rates of Vitex rotundifolia in other soil mixtures. Tree height, root diameter, photosynthesis and chlorophyll contents tended to increase with increased soil thickness.

Effect of agricultural materials of traditional agriculture on control of rice blast (Pyricularia oryzae)

  • The objective of this research was to determine controlling effects on rice blast (Pyricularia oryzae) in rice plants by using plant extracts from different extraction methods (water, boiling water, fermentation, and ethanol) from 38 agricultural materials of traditional agriculture. Rice blast was completely suppressed by 3% ethanol extracts in Rheum palmatum roots, and suppressed 97% and 77% by 10% ethanol extracts in onion bulb and pine tree leaves, respectively in a laboratory test. However, other agricultural materials showed low effect on suppression of rice blast. Additionally, in a seedling test, rice injury of two cultivars (Ilmibyeo and Hopyoungbyeo) against rice blast was reduced 40-71%, 29-63%, and 23-63% by 5 and 10% ethanol extracts in Rheum palmatum roots, onion bulb, and pine tree leaves, respectively, compared with non-treated controls. Rice injury of two cultivars (Ilmibyeo and Hopyoungbyeo) against rice blast was reduced by 21-55%, 23-46%, and 5-39% in response to Rheum palmatum roots, onion bulb, and pine tree leaf applications at 100, 200 and $400g/m^2$ at 0 day after seeding, respectively, compared with non-treated controls. Rice plants did not show any leaf injuries and growth reduction after treatments of the Rheum palmatum roots, onion bulb, and pine tree leaf extracts or soil application. Thus, the above materials may be used for controlling rice blast in organically produced rice fields.
