A study on the imputation solution for missing speed data on UTIS by using adaptive k-NN algorithm (적응형 k-NN 기법을 이용한 UTIS 속도정보 결측값 보정처리에 관한 연구)

  • UTIS(Urban Traffic Information System) directly collects link travel time in urban area by using probe vehicles. Therefore it can estimate more accurate link travel speed compared to other traffic detection systems. However, UTIS includes some missing data caused by the lack of probe vehicles and RSEs on road network, system failures, and other factors. In this study, we suggest a new model, based on k-NN algorithm, for imputing missing data to provide more accurate travel time information. New imputation model is an adaptive k-NN which can flexibly adjust the number of nearest neighbors(NN) depending on the distribution of candidate objects. The evaluation result indicates that the new model successfully imputed missing speed data and significantly reduced the imputation error as compared with other models(ARIMA and etc). We have a plan to use the new imputation model improving traffic information service by applying UTIS Central Traffic Information Center.

An Experimental Study on the Penetration of Ilmenite System Coated Arc Welding Electrodes (Ilmenite계(系) 아아크용접봉(鎔接棒)의 Penetration에 관(關)한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • Penetrations of arc welding electrades are different by changing welding conditions, welding speed of travel and current, even though quite same ones. Changing status of penetration is studied by changing welding speed of travel keeping welding current constant, at first, and by changing welding current keeping welding speed of travel which was obtained prior experiment constant, afterward. The F-100 4mm $\phi$ rods, E4301 class, which covering substance is mainly ilmenite and a domestic representative product of this class electrode, are used for this experiment. The Marquette's No.130 5/32"(4mm)$\phi$ rods, E6011 class, and No. 140 5/32"(4mm)$\phi$, E6013 class, which were produced in the United Stated, are used to compare penetration with F-100 at same welding conditions. The covering substance of Marquette's No. 130 rods is mainly cellulose, and belong to deep penetration arc welding electrodes, the covering material of another rods is titania, and a kind f shallow penetration rods. The result of this study is as follow : penetration of F-100, domestic ilmentite covering electrade, E4301 class, is between E6011 and E6013 of the United States products. At the lower range of welding current, penetration is closer to E6013 than E6011, at the higher range, closer to E6011 than another; and the value of penetration ranges $1.65{\sim}2.70mm$ for 4mm$\phi$ rods in the adequate current range.   • A train performance simulation (TPS) software is a computer program that simulates the operation of a train system over a specified railway route and it is widely used in railroad operation and research applications. Numerical and graphical results from the simulation software, which is developed in this study, provide information on such performance variables as travel time. running speed, energy consumption at a specific time interval and in overall service time as the train moves along the route. Three types of input data are required for a computer simulation: track information, train information, and running conditions. The simulation of train performance starts with several simple mathematical models including train configuration. traction efforts, running resistance. and braking requirements. Based on the basic specifications of Korean High Speed Railway, System. this study, puts a focus on the estimation and assessment of train performance comparing. the specific train configurations of KEST20/11. CPLE20/10. PROP20/10, which are proposed from the previous G7 projects.

  • This paper presents a novel Intelligent-Welding-Carriage (IWC) for automation of curved block in shipbuilding. The curved block is usually used in both front and back side of the ship. In curved block root gap is big, 1-7 (mm) and inclination, 0-30 (deg). Since available conventional carriage type is limited to use below root gap of 3 (mm), only manual welding is employed in curved block. To adopt an IWC in curved block, it requires control of the welding conditions, i.e., voltage. current, weaving speed, dwell time and travel speed, with respect to root gap and inclination to achieve good welding qualify. In this paper, an IWC is developed for automization of welding operation to accommodate gap and inclination. Kinematics model and dynamics using Lagrangian formulation of the manipulator is introduced. IWC utilizes a database to perform accurate welding. The database is programmed based on numerous experimental test results with respect to gap, inclination, material, travel speed, weaving condition, voltage, and current. Finally, experimental result using PID control is addressed for verifying the trajectory tracking accuracy of end-effector.

  • This study was to evaluate the walking speed of elderly people by using the travel route big data collected by travel diary and smart phone application. We analyzed the change of walking behavior in the residential street environments of the elderly whether they had a company or not. We interpreted the meaning based on previous studies. In addition, the characteristics of elderly people's use of the residential street environment were analyzed by comparing the change in spatial speed according to the companion. The result reveals that the usage patterns of the residential street environments change depending on whether they were accompanied or not. First, the elderly tend to do more social activities while walking alone than when they were accompanied. When they were accompanied the social activities occur in empty lot near the residential area. However, the social activities of the elderly occur in open space such as neighborhood park or playground while walking alone. Finally, This study has strength that it empirically analyzes the elderly's walking behavior and usage paths in small outdoor spaces, including residential streets.

Real-Time Variable Speed Limits for Urban Freeway (도시고속도로를 위한 실시간 가변 속도 제한)

  • Recently, the convergence of information technology with bio-technology, nano-technology or other technologies has been creating a new paradigm. In a field of transportation, the intelligent transport systems which is a convergence of intelligent technologies and transportation systems have been studied. The Variable Speed Limit(VSL), is one of ITS technologies, is thought to improve safety and efficiency of transportation while controlling speed limit based on road conditions. Legacy studies have considered only one station for VSL algorithm. However, it is not appropriate for an urban freeway installed with many stations. In this paper, new algorithm is proposed to not only enhance effectiveness of VSL based on cooperation of stations but also reflect road conditions within 30 seconds. The proposed algorithm consists of 4 steps: the first is a "searching bottleneck station" step, the second is a "calculating a size of congestion" step, the third is a "calculating the number of controlled stations" step, the final is a "calculating VSL" step. This algorithm guarantees improved safety and minimum additional travel time. The travel time should be considered because drivers would against the VSL algorithm when the proposed algorithm occurs additional travel time. In our experiments, microscopic traffic simulator VISSIM is selected to perform a modeling work. The results show that proposed algorithm provides the improved safety and minimum increase of travel time.

  • The work zone traffic management is of keen interest because the unstable traffic stream in work zones leads to not only less productive traffic operational efficiency but also negative impacts on traffic safety. A promising method to address such issues is variable speed limit systems(VSLS). VSLS is expected to increase in throughput and to enhance safety by diminishing the crash potential. In addition, the usefulness of VSLS has been demonstrated by significant amount of existing literature. The objective of this study is to identify the effectiveness of VSLS based on a meta analysis technique. Throughput and travel speed were used as measures of effectiveness for VSLS in terms of the operational efficiency and safety respectively. Results showed that approximately 16.4% increase in throughput and 16.5% decrease in travel speed were obtainable by VSLS. The outcomes of this study would be useful in developing technologies and polices for better operation of VSLS.

  • Travel time prediction is an indispensable to many advanced traveler information systems(ATIS) and intelligent transportation systems(ITS). In this paper we propose a method to predict travel time using $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayesian classification method which has exhibited high accuracy and processing speed when applied to classily large amounts of data. Our proposed prediction algorithm is also scalable to road networks with arbitrary travel routes. For a given route, we consider time-varying average segment velocity to perform more accuracy of travel time prediction. We compare the proposed method with the existing prediction algorithms like link-based prediction algorithm [1] and Micro T* algorithm [2]. It is shown from the performance comparison that the proposed predictor can reduce MARE (mean absolute relative error) significantly, compared with the existing predictors.

Highway Design Speed and Its Impacts: Some Evidence in South Korea

  • In an effort to increase the operational efficiency of highways, South Korea has been increasing its design speed recently. However, the use of higher design speed will also increase construction costs. Moreover, increasing the design speed is expected to have an impact on safety. Hence, there is a strong need to demonstrate that the benefits outweigh the cost of having a higher design speed. This study surveyed a sample of design engineers to determine their awareness of the consequences of increasing design speed and their assessment of the right design speed for an actual rural arterial. In addition to the survey, a case study of three recently upgraded highways was conducted to determine the changes in traffic volumes, speeds, travel times, and safety.

Determining Ideal Distance between Consecutive Exit Ramps (고속도로 연결로상 연속 분류지점 간의 이격거리 검토)

  • When an expressway intersects another expressway, a unique connector needs to be designed between the two consecutive exit ramps. In such a case, it is important to design a connector such that there is enough distance for drivers to find their way safely. A current design manual in Korea prescribes the minimum length of the connector as 240 m. In this research, we have suggested a method for calculating the minimum length of a connector in order to check the feasibility of the currently prescribed length. For this purpose, we have attempted to determine the total perception-reaction time and lane-changing time required by a driver. For determining the driver's perception-reaction time, we have used the driver's decision time in addition to the conventional 2.5 s of perception-reaction time for stopping sight distances. We have considered both the design speed and the average travel speed for the calculation of the length. To evaluate the accuracy of the new method, we have chosen four sites on expressways for which relatively high accident rates were recorded. As a result, we could verify that the current limit (240 m) was sufficient for drivers to be able to change lanes in the given specific geometry. However, the prescribed limit should be revised in case the drivers' decision time is considered to be their perception-reaction time. All new approaches for calculating the ideal length of a connector have been carried out by taking into account the design speed as well as the average travel speed. Owing to the characteristics of the specific geometry for two consecutive exit ramps and the large difference between the design speed and the average travel speed in the objective areas, it is more realistic to use the proposed method by keeping the decision time equal to a driver's perception-reaction time, in order to determine the ideal distance that should be maintained between two consecutive exit ramps.
