The Impact of Foreign Exchange Rates on International Travel: The Case of South Korea

  • Purpose - The objective of the paper is to explain both the price sensitivity of international tourists to South Korea and the price sensitivity of Korean tourists to international travel. The study examines long-run equilibrium relationships and Granger causal relationships between foreign exchange rates and inbound and outbound tourism demand in South Korea. Research design/ data / methodology - The study employs monthly time series data from January 1990 to September 2010. The paper examines the long-run equilibrium relationship using the Johansen cointegration test approach after unit root tests. The short-run Granger causality was tested using the vector error correction model with the Wald test. Results - Hypothesis 1 testing whether there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between exchange rates, inbound and outbound tourism demand is supported. Hypothesis 2 testing whether exchange rates lead to a change in touristarrivals and expenditure is not supported. Hypothesis 3 testing whether exchange rates lead to a change in tourist departures and expenditure is supported. Conclusions - The findings of this study show that the impacts of tourism price competitiveness are changing quite significantly with regard to destination competitiveness. In other words, the elasticity of tourism price over tourism demand has been moderated.

Model and Heuristics for the Heterogeneous Fixed Fleet Vehicle Routing Problem with Pick-Up and Delivery

  • Purpose - This paper discusses the heterogeneous fixed fleet vehicle routing problem with pick-up and delivery (HFFVRPPD), for vehicles with different capacities, fixed costs, and travel costs. Research Design, data, methodology - This paper made nine assumptions for establishing a mathematical model to describe HFFVRPPD. It established a practical mathematical model, and because of the non-deterministic polynomial-time hard (NP-hard), improved the traditional simulated annealing algorithm and tested a new algorithm using a certain scale model. Result - We calculated the minimum cost of the heterogeneous fixed fleet vehicle routing problem (HFFVRP) with a single task and, on comparing the results with the actual HFFVRP for the single task alone, observed that the total cost of HFFVRPPD reduced significantly by 46.7%. The results showed that the new algorithm provides better solutions and stability. Conclusions - This paper, by comparing the HFFVRP and HFFVRPPD results, highlights certain advantages of using HFFVRPPD in physical distribution enterprises, such as saving distribution vehicles, reducing logistics cost, and raising economic benefits.

경사 2층 구조를 위한 3차원 굴절탄성파 주시 토모그래피 (Three-dimensional Seismic Refraction Travel Time Tomography for Dipping Two Layers)

  • 본 논문은 3차원 굴절탄성파 탐사시 얻게 되는 굴절주시를 이용하여 경사진 지층경계면상 속도 분포를 추정하는 방법을 수립코자 수행한 연구를 요약한 것이다. 자료획득은 토모그래피 기법에, 주시 역산은 under-relaxation ART 기법에 의거하였다. 모델은 경사 2층 구조이며, 관련된 매개변수는 지반조사시 만나게 되는 지층을 염두에 두고 선정하였다. 하부 지층에는 수직으로 저속도 혹은 고속도 이상대가 존재하며, 따라서 탐사의 주목적은 이러한 이상대를 탐지하는 것이다. 몇 가지 경우에 대하여 역산을 수행한 결과, 경사 지층 경계면의 경우, 경사 보정을 수행치 않으면 역산 결과는 판독이 어렵거나, 판독하더라도 착오를 일으킬 수 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 종래 심도 추정을 위한 굴절탄성파 탐사에서, $15^{\circ}$ 이내의 경사지층 경계면을 평균적으로 수평이라고 가정해도 큰 오차가 나지 않는다는 사실을 상기할 때, 앞에 말한 사실은 특이한 일이다.

강우의 개념적 시간분포와 설계홍수량 산정에 관한 연구 (The Estimations of A Conceptual Time Distribution of Rainfall and Design Flood)

  • It is necessary to estimate the runoff hydrograph and peak flood discharge using law of probability for synthetic flood control policy and design of hydraulic structures. Rainfall analysis is needed in the process of peak flood discharge estimation and the time distribution of a design rainfall is a very important process in the analysis. In this study, we estimate design flood for a small urban basin and a rural basin of medium scale which have different travel times. The Huff method is widely used in Korea for the time distribution of design rainfall to estimate design flood. So, we use Huff method and a conceptual method which is suggested in this study for the comparative purpose. The 100-year frequency rainfall is used to estimate design flood for each basin and the design flood is compared with the existing design flood. As the result, the design flood is overestimated $14.6m^3/sec$ by Huff method and is underestimated $70.9m^3/sec$ by a conceptual method for the rural basin. For the small urban basin, the design flood is excessively overestimated $294.65m^3/sec$ by Huff method and is overestimated $173m^3/sec$ by a conceptual method. The reason of excessive overestimation by Huff method in the small urban basin is that the increased rate of rainfall intensity according to the decrease of duration is large and the duration exceeds the time of concentration when the increased rainfall intensity is concentrated in a quartile. Therefore, we suggested a conceptual method for the time distribution of design rainfall by considering the rainless period and duration. Especially, the conceptual method might be useful for the small urban basin with short concentration time which the design flood is overestimated by Huff method.

침출수 이동 해석을 통한 석탄재 처분방식의 평가 (Evaluation of Fly Ash Disposal Methods by Analysis of Leachate Migration)

  • 폐기물 처분장으로부터 인간생활 환경으로까지 침출수가 어떤 방향과 속도로 유출될 것인가하는 것은 많은 사람의 관심의 대상이며, 어떤 처분장 설계가 관련 규제법을 효과적으로 만족시키고 있는가를 알아야 할 필요가 있다. 침출수이동에 관한 해석방법을 제심함에 있어, 화력발전의 결과로 생기는 석탄재의 폐기 방식중 두 가지 대표적인 방식인 매립방식과 연못방식에 대한 평가를 예시하였다. 관련 규제법으로는 "100/100 룰", 즉, 처분장으로부터 100ft(30.5cm) 떨어진 곳까지 침출수가 도달하는데 100년이상 걸려야 한다는 제약조건을 적용하였다. 수치해석에 의한 지하수 유동방정식의 해는 압력수두 분포와 유동량(flux)에 관한 정보를 제시하여 주었으며, 유적선(pathline)의 해석은 침출수 이동 경로와 시간에 관한 예측을 가능케 하였다.을 가능케 하였다.

Using Light Travel Time Effect to Detect Circumbinary Planets with Ground-Based Telescopes

  • In the past few years, two-planet circumbinary systems (e.g., HW Vir, NN Ser, DP Leo and HU Aqr) have been detected around short-period eclipsing binaries using ground-based telescopes. The existence of these planets has been inferred by interpreting the O-C variations of the mid-eclipse times. We have tested the orbital stability of these systems and propose to use Light Travel Time Effect (LITE) to detect such circumbinary planets from the ground. We generated synthetically the LITE signal of a two-planet circumbinary system with the aim to apply an analytic LITE model to recover the underlying synthetic system. To mimic a degree of realism inherent to ground-based observations, we added to the synthetic LITE data white noise with a Gaussian distribution and sampled the synthetic LITE signal randomly. We successfully recovered the original system demonstrating that two-planet circumbinary systems can be detected using ground-based telescopes, provided the timing measurements of the mid-eclipses are sufficiently accurate and the observing baseline is long enough to ensure a sufficient coverage of all involved periods. We used HU Aqr as a test system and applied our model to its proposed planetary bodies considering near-circular orbits. We present the results of our calculations and discuss the LITE-detectability of a HU Aqr-like system.

접근성 지표를 도입한 중력모형의 2단계 정산기법 개발 및 적용 (Development and Implementation of a 2-Phase Calibration Method for Gravity Model Considering Accessibility)

  • 기존의 중력모형은 통행비용 변수만으로 존 간 특성을 설명하기 때문에 많은 한계점을 갖게 된다. 현대 도시의 통행 패턴은 거리나 비용뿐만이 아니라 존 별 특성과 교통인프라 수준 등의 영향을 받기 때문이다. 따라서 장래 통행을 합리적으로 추정하기 위해서는 이러한 특성을 고려한 모형이 개발되어야 한다. 본 연구는 이러한 관점에서 접근성 변수를 중력모형의 설명 변수로 도입하였다. 이와 함께 변수가 추가에 따른 2단계 정산기법을 제안하였다. 이는 통행저항함수의 계수를 회귀분석을 통해 우선 추정한 뒤, 존별 균형인자를 순차적으로 추정하는 방법이다. RMSE, E-norm, C.R을 활용한 접근성을 도입한 중력모형의 검증 결과, 기존의 중력모형보다 통행패턴의 구현 능력이 향상된 점을 확인하였다. 특히, 단거리 통행량 추정에 어려움을 겪은 기존 모형의 한계점을 해결하였다는 점이 주목할 만 하다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 새로운 중력모형의 정산기법을 제안함과 동시에 접근성 변수의 도입을 통해 존 간 특성을 구현하였다는 점에서 통행분포모형의 개선 가능성을 제시하였다.

  • An instantaneous unit sediment graph (IUSG) model is investigated for prediction of sediment yield from an upland watershed in Northwestern Mississippi. Sediment yields are predicted by convolving source runoff with an IUSG. The IUSG is the distribution of sediment from an instantaneous burst of rainfall producing one unit of runoff. The IUSG, defined as a product of the sediment concentration distribution (SCD) and the instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH), is known to depend on the characteristics of the effective rainfall. The IUH is derived by the Nash model for each event. The SCD is assumed to be an exponential function for each event and its parameters were correlated with the effective rainfall characteristics. A sediment routing function, based on travel time and sediment particle size, is used to predict the SCD.
