  • In this study, an experimental investigation of the strength of R/C columns with 300mm square sections confined by head anchorage bar is presented. This initial phase of research considers only axial loading and consists of a total of 7 column tests. The main variables are distance and anchorage type of transverse reinforcement such as standard hooks and headed bar. The purpose of this study is to investigate the confinement effect and strength increment by head and to propose the confinement model for column using the head at end of lateral tie. Also, the test results for ultimate strength and strength gain factor of columns in this study and previous study is compared with the existing analytical models. Based on the test results, the Saatcioglu's model estimates confinement effects was closed to experimental value and the developed analytical approach considered the head was capable of predicting the strength gain factor results with a resonable accuracy.

  • The bond strengths with ceramco porcelain were compared between precious alloy S, and non-precious alloys V.U. and R. And the changes in bond strengths of non-precious alloys with ceramco porcelain, according to surface preparations by sand blasting, longitudinal grinding, transverse grinding, and high polishing, were studied. The test specimens were prepared by firing porcelain doughnuts on the surface prepared alloy rods, and investing in dental stone. The specimens were subjected to shear loading forces. The conclusions drawn from the investigation are as follows: 1. The bond strengths with ceramco porcelain were higher in the non-precious alloys U and R, than in the precious alloy S. 2. The bond strengths were in descending order for R alloy, U alloy, V alloy, and S alloy. 3. The bond strengths were highest when the R alloy and U alloy were surface prepared by sand blasting. 4. All bond strength values were lowest when the alloy surfaces were prepared by high polishing.

  • This paper deals with the geometric nonlinear bending analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates subjected to uniform transverse loading. The eight-noded degenerated shell element and three-noded degenerated curved beam element with five degrees of freedom per node are adopted in the present analysis to model the plate and stiffeners respectively. The Green-Lagrange strain displacement relationship is adopted and the total Lagrangian approach is taken in the formulation. The convergence study of the present formulation is carried out first and the results are compared with the results published in the literature. The stiffener element is reformulated taking the torsional rigidity in an efficient manner. The effects of lamination angle, depth of stiffener and number of layers, on the bending response of the composite stiffened plates are considered and the results are discussed.

  • The mechanical properties of biological materials depend on numerous factors. The majority of these relationships are still unknown today, especially with regard to their quantitative characteristics. The reason is that biological materials constitute biomechanical systems of very complex construction, whose behavior cannot be characterized by simple physical constants, as for example can that of engineering materials. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the compression creep and recovery properties of rice stalks at various levels of applied load The compression creep and recovery behavior of the rice stalk could be predicted precisely by rheological model which approached closely to the measured values. But the coefficients of the Burgers recovery model were different from those of the creep model. The Steady state creep behavior occurred at the higher level of force and the logarithmic creep behavior occurred at the lower level of force. The mechanical model being expected the creep behavior in relation with the level of applied load, which was well explained that the rice stalk might be visco-elastic material.

  • In the present work, an analytical solution for the static analysis of laminated composites, functionally graded and sandwich singly and doubly curved panels on the rectangular plan-form, subjected to uniformly distributed transverse loading is presented. Mathematical formulation is based on the higher order shear deformation theory and principle of virtual work is applied to derive the equations of equilibrium subjected to small deformation. A solution methodology based on the fast converging finite double Chebyshev series is used to solve the linear partial differential equations along with the simply supported boundary condition. The effect of span to thickness ratio, radius of curvature to span ratio, stacking sequence, power index are investigated. The accuracy of the solution is checked by the convergence study of non-dimensional central deflection and moments. Present results are compared with those available in the literature.

  • To prevent major cracking and failure during earthquakes, it is important to design reinforced concrete liquid storage structures, such as water and fuel storage tanks, properly for the hydrodynamic pressure loads caused by seismic excitations. There is a discussion in recent Codes that most of the base shear applied to liquid containment structures is resisted by inplane membrane shear rather than by transverse flexural shear. The purpose of this paper is to underline the importance of the membrane force system in carrying the base shear produced by hydrodynamic pressures in both rectangular and cylindrical tank structures. Only rigid tanks constrained at the base are considered. Analysis is performed for both tall and broad tanks to compare their behavior under seismic excitation. Efforts are made to quantify the percentage of base shear carried by membrane action and the consequent procedures that must be followed for safe design of liquid containing storage structures.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the flat plates in deep basements, subjected to floor load and in-plane compressive load due to soil and hydraulic lateral pressure. For nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparison with existing experiments performed on plates simply supported on four edges. The flat plates to be studied are designed according to the Direct Design Method in ACI 318-95. Through numerical study on the effects of different load combinations and loading sequence, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plates is determined. For plates under the governing load condition, parametric studies are performed to investigate the strength variations with reinforcement ratio, aspect ratio, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio. Based on the numerical results, the floor load magnification factor is proposed.

  • The objective is to determine the mechanical properties of the composites formed in two types, theoretically. The first composite includes micro-particles in a matrix while the second involves long, thin fibers. A fictitious, homogeneous, linear-elastic and isotropic single material named as effective material is considered during calculation which is based on the equality of the strain energies of the composite and effective material under the same loading conditions. The procedure is carried out with volume integrals considering a unique strain energy in a body. Particularly, the effective elastic shear modulus has been calculated exactly for small-particle composites by the same procedure in order to determine of bulk modulus thereof. Additionally, the transverse shear modulus of fiber reinforced composites has been obtained through a simple approach leading to the practical equation. The results have been compared not only with the outcomes in the literature obtained by different method but also with those of finite element analysis performed in this study.

  • The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.

  • In this paper, the microstructure, hardness, tensile deformation and fracture behavior of high strength alloy steel X2M is presented anddiscussed. The influence of both composition and processing on microstructure of the as-provided material and resultant influence of microstructure, as a function of orientation, on hardness, tensile properties and final fracture behavior is highlighted. The macroscopic mode and intrinsic microscopic features that result from fracture of the steel specimens machined from the two orientations, longitudinal and transverse is discussed. The intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing quasi-static deformation and final fracture behavior of this high strength steel are outlined in light of the effects oftest specimen orientation, intrinsic microstructural effects and nature of loading.
