  • In this paper it is to establish a comprehensive model for predicting damping in sandwich Laminated composites on the basis of strain energy method. In this model, the effect of transverse shear on the material damping has been considered with in-plane stresses. Results showed that the viscoelastic core thickness in the sandwich beam and the Length of a beam have a high impact on the material damping. The transverse shear appears to be highly influenced by the damping behavior in $0^0$ laminated sandwiched composites. However, it is Little influenced by that in $90^0$ laminated sandwiched composites.

  • A study on the static analysis of Timoshenko beams is presented. A beam element is developed by using isogeometric approach based on Timoshenko beam theory which allows the transverse shear deformation. The identification of transverse shear locking is conducted by three refinement schemes such as h-, p- and k-refinement and compared to other reference solutions. From numerical examples, the present beam element does not produce any shear locking in very thin beam situations even with full Gauss integration rule. Finally, the benchmark tests described in this study is provided as future reference solutions for Timoshenko beam problems based on isogeometric approach.

  • Many research applications in basic sciences and biology such as protein crystallography require hard x-rays in the range of 3-20 keV with high brightness. A medium energy storage ring as PLS-II with a beam energy of 3 GeV can meet such high photon energies. In-vacuum undulators (IVU) with a period length of 20 mm and a peak field of 0.97 T are used in the PLS-II ring to produce such X-rays in the fundamental or higher harmonics. Due to the many poles and high fields, insertion devices like wigglers and undulators have a significant impact on the stability of the electron beam with potential degradation of beam quality and life time. Therefore, nonlinear fields must be determined by measurement and evaluated as to their impact on beam stability. Specifically, transverse field roll-off can be a serious detriment to injection in top-up mode and must be corrected. We use magnetic field measurement data to evaluated beam stability by tracking particles using an explicit symplectic integrator in both, transverse and longitudinal planes.

  • It is investigated that the characteristics of rotating cantilevered composite beam with a breathing crack. In the present study, the crack is modeled as a breathing crack which opens and closes with the motion of the unidirectional graphite-fiber reinforced polyimide beam. For the finite element analysis, the cracked element is modelled by the local flexibility matrix calculated on the basis of fracture mechanics using Castiligano theorem. Rotating beam is considered only transverse bending motion so that the element includes two degrees of freedom per node such as the transverse deflection and slope. The time history and frequency response function of the beam with a breathing crack are studied by Newmark direct time integration method and FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)simulation. Effects of various parameters such as the crack depths, crack locations, ply angles, volume fraction ratios, and rotating speeds of the beam are also studied. Numerical results indicate that it is more reliable to be modelled as a breathing crack than an open crack.

  • This research has been devoted to examine nonlinear static bending analysis of smart beams with nano dimension exposed to thermal environment. The beam elastic properties are corresponding to piezo-magnetic material of different compositions. The large deflection analysis of the beam has been performed assuming that the beam is exposed to transverse uniform pressure. Based on the rule of Hamilton, the governing equations have been derived for a nonlocal thin beam and solved using differential quadrature method. Temperature variation effect on nonlinear deflection of the smart beams has been studied. Also, the beam deflection is shown to be affected by electric voltage, magnetic intensity and material composition.

  • Dynamic response and economic of a laminated porous concrete beam reinforced by nanoparticles subjected to harmonic transverse dynamic load is investigated considering structural damping. The effective nanocomposite properties are evaluated on the basis of Mori-Tanaka model. The concrete beam is modeled by the sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT). Utilizing nonlinear strains-deflection, energy relations and Hamilton's principal, the governing final equations of the concrete laminated beam are calculated. Utilizing differential quadrature method (DQM) as well as Newmark method, the dynamic displacement of the concrete laminated beam is discussed. The influences of porosity parameter, nanoparticles volume percent, agglomeration of nanoparticles, boundary condition, geometrical parameters of the concrete beam and harmonic transverse dynamic load are studied on the dynamic displacement of the laminated structure. Results indicated that enhancing the nanoparticles volume percent leads to decrease in the dynamic displacement about 63%. In addition, with considering porosity of the concrete, the dynamic displacement enhances about 2.8 time.

  • A simplified rational method is developed to evaluate transverse earthquake-induced forces in continuous bridges. This method models the bridge as a beam on elastic foundation, and assumes a sinusoidal curve for both vibration mode shape and deflected shape in the transverse direction. The principle of minimum total potential is used to calculate the displacements and the earthquake-induced forces in the transverse direction. This method is concise and easy to apply, and hence, offers an attractive alternative to a lengthy and time consuming three dimensional modeling of the bridge as given by AASHTO under its Single Mode Spectral Analysis Method.

  • On the basis of the concept of strain energy-weighted dissipation, an enhanced model for predicting damping in laminates is presented. In this model, the influence of transverse shear on $90^{\circ}$ laminates has been included with those of in-plane stresses on beam. Also, an experimental damping measurement is conducted with changing the length and the thickness of laminated beam specimen for confirmation of the model prediction. The theoretical predictions in $90^{\circ}$laminates were reasonably compared with experimental data. The transverse shear reveals to have an influence on the damping, behavior in $90^{\circ}$ laminates.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis for determining the transverse deflection of simply supported battened beams subjected to a uniformly distributed transverse quasi-static load. The analysis considers not only the shear effect but also the discrete effect of battens on the transverse deflection of the battened beam. The analytical solution is obtained using the principle of minimum potential energy. Numerical validation of the present analytical solution is accomplished using finite element methods. The present analytical solution shows that the shear effect on the transverse deflection of battened beams increases with the cross-section area of the main member but decreases with the cross-section area of the batten. The longer the battened beam is, or the larger the moment of inertia of the main member is, the smaller the shear effect will be.
