  • This paper addresses a model for the transportation planning that determines the transportation cycle time and the vehicle size to minimize the cost in a distribution system. The vehicle routing to minimize the transportation distance of the vehicles is also determined. A distribution system is consisted of a distribution center and many retailers. Products are transported from distribution center to retailers according to transportation planning. A model is assumed that the time horizon is continuous and infinite, and the demand of retailers is constant and deterministic. Cost factors are the transportation cost and the inventory cost, which the transportation cost is proportional to the transportation distance of vehicle when products are transported from distribution center to retailers, and the inventory cost is proportional to inventory amounts of retailers. A transportation cycle time and a vehicle size are selected among respective finite alternatives. The problem is analyzed, and a illustrative example is shown.

  • This study analyzed factors affecting daily travel times at each stage of commuters' life cycle. In this study, travel times were dealt with in the context of trip chain. That is, the travel time was defined as the total amount of time commuters had spent to move for daily activities from leaving to coming back home. A commuter's life cycle was divided into 6 stages on a basis of both householder's age and family type: i.e., the unmarried youth period, the family forming period, the children education period, the children youth period, the children independence period, and the aged period. Variables such as commuting times, home-based trip cycle recurrences, and the number of stops differed for each stage of life cycle, the latter of which represents how many places a commuter dropped by during a trip cycle. Several factors were found to affect commuting times at each stage of life cycle as a result of applying a Cox proportional hazard model. The empirical study was conducted using 2010' household travel survey data collected from Gyeonggi-do.

  • The common cycle time for the linded signals is usually determined for the critical intersecion, just because the cpacity of a signalized intersection depends on the cycle time. This may not be optimal since the interactions between the flow and the spatial structure of the route or the area are disregarded in this case. It is common to separate the total delay incurred at signals into two parts, a deterministic or uniform delay and a stochastic or random delay. The deterministic delays and the stochastic delays on the artery particularly related to signal cycle time. For this purpose a microscopic simulation technique is used to evaluate deterministic delays, and a macroscopic simulation technique based on the principles of Markov chains is used to evaluate stochastic delays with over flow queue. As a result of investigating the relations between deterministic delays and cycle time in the various circumstances of spacing of signals and traffic volume. As for stochastic delays the resalts of comparisons of the macroscopic simulation and Newell's approximation with the microscopic simulation indicate that the former is valid for the degree of saturation less than 0.95 and the latter is for that above 0.95. Newell's argument that the total stochastic delay on an arterial is dominated by that at or caused by critical intersection is certified by the simulation experiments. The comprehensive analyses of the values of optimal cycle time with various conditions lead to a model. The cycle time determined by this model shows to be approximately 70% of that calculated by Webster's.

  • The amount of international trade is rapidly increasing as a result of globalization. It is well known that as the size of a vessel becomes larger, the transportation cost per container decreases. That is, the economy-of-scale holds even in maritime container transportation. As a result, the sizes of containerships have been steadily increased for reducing transportation costs. In addition, various handling technologies and handling equipment have been introduced to increase the throughput capacities of container terminals. Quay crane (QC) that carries out load/unload operations plays the most important role among various handling equipment in terminals. Two typical examples of advanced QC concepts proposed so far are double trolley QC and supertainer QC. This paper suggests a method of estimating the expected value and the standard deviation of the container handling cycle time of the advanced QCs that involve several handling components which move at the same time. Numerical results obtained by the proposed estimation procedure are compared with those obtained by simulation studies. In order to demonstrate the advantage of advanced QCs, we compared their expected cycle times with those of a conventional QC.

  • In this paper, a three level duty cycle controlled half bridge LLC converter for EV charger application is presented. The topology and operating regions of the converter are discussed. The equations of the converter are derived in time domain. A small signal model of the converter is developed by perturbation and linearization of the steady state model about their operating point using Extended Describing function.

  • In this paper, an improved high efficiency gantry crane for container transportation is designed. The basic concept of the designed crane can be used with modification of the classical gantry crane instead of changing lots of them. This crane can reduce the cycle time more than the classical gantry carne. The high efficiency gantry crane can improve the productivity of the container transportation job because of reducing cycle time. The loading and unloading capability are compared with classical crane. The result show that show that the proposed crane has better performances than classical type.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a cycle-free signal timing model for minimizing delays based on Third-generation control concept using Genetic Algorithm. A special feature of this model is its ability to manage delays of turning movements on the cycle basis. The model produces a cycle-free based signal timing(cycles and green times) for each intersection to minimize delays of turning movements on the cycle basis. The performance of cycle-free signal timings was evaluated on normal (v/c = 0.7) and oversaturated (v/c=1.0) conditions. The performance measures are throughput and the number of queued vehicles at the end of green time. The result shows that the cycle free signal timing is superior to the fixed signal timing to manage traffic flows of intersections; (1) the proposed model accomplishes the basic objective of the research, producing cycle free signal timings on the cycle basis, (2) on normal conditions, cycle free signal timings produce less queued vehicles at the end of green time, and (3) on oversaturated conditions, the cycle free signal timing is superior to the fixed signal timing to manage saturated traffic flows of intersections.

  • Effectiveness of Just in time managing system can be obtained by removing unexpected lead-time and maintaining consistency on the physical transportation of construction resource. Construction resource management is essential on checking on load data from production of shop to field, and it is based on building resource life cycle information. In this study, production, transportation, and assembly disciplines of concrete construction should real time communications exchanging information related to shop-field with each other, Establishing information support system is an important initial step for promoting active cooperations among these resource life cycle on data flow. To achieve this, on suitable using management point, we suggest a concrete construction control model.

  • In the paper a superior performance algorithm compared to the existing vehicle actuated controller and time fixed controller and the additional controller is described through realization of fuzzy traffic phase controller. Fuzzy theory is encouraging since the application is similar to human's decision ability that is approately coped with uncertain conditions. The paper presents that selection of the phase adequated the variable traffic conditions through the fuzzy theory algorithm and decision of optimal cycle time approated the uncertain traffic volume are predominant in traffic jam solution compared to the existing Webster's cycle time decision method and the sequential traffic phase design method and dual-ring phase operation system.

  • This paper deals with an operation concept of "time-transfer of buses", in which buses arrive a transfer center at the same time and allow passengers to transfer to other bus lines, so that passengerscan go anywhere all the timed-transfere buses operate with only one transfer. This timed-transfer bus system is known as an efficient operating technique which can be adopted in an area with sparsely distrubuted bus demand. A model of timed-transfer is estabilished in terms of vaious factors such as the expected(or average) arrival time, distribution of arrival time, timed-transfer cycle, shceduled departure time, etc. It is assumed that the objective of timed-transfer bus system is to minimize the total transfer waiting time. The optimal schedualed arrival time or buffer time(time required to arrive ealy in consideration of delay) is analyzed for a general case and various speicial cases. It was found that the optiaml buffer time is an inverse funcion of the timed-transfer cycl and increases with the cycle time, assumin g that there is a fixed scheduled departure time at the transfer cetner regardless of whether one or more buses fail to arrive before the scheduled departure time. If buses are to wait uhtil all the buses arrive at the transfer center, that is, the transfer departure time is vairable, the optimal scheduled arrival times can be obtained by a mathmatical programming.
