In this paper, we report thermodynamic and transport properties (diffusion coefficient, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) of diatomic gases ($H_2$, $N_2$, $O_2$, and $Cl_2$) at 273.15 K and 1.00 atm by performing molecular dynamics simulations using Lennard-Jones intermolecular potential and modified Green-Kubo formulas. The results of self-diffusion coefficients of diatomic gases obtained from velocity auto-correlation functions by Green-Kubo relation are in good agreement with those obtained from mean square displacements by Einstein relation. While the results for viscosities of diatomic gases obtained from stress auto-correlation functions underestimate the experimental results, those for thermal conductivities obtained from heat flux auto-correlation functions overestimate the experimental data except $H_2$.
To examine the structure and dynamics of thick accretion disks, we use a two-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic code coupled with radiation transport. The $\alpha$-model and the full viscous stress-tensor description for the kinematic viscosity are used. The radiation transport is treated in the gray, flux-limited diffusion approximation. The finite difference methods used are based on an explicit-implicit method. We apply the numerical code to the Super-Eddington black-hole model for SS 433.@The result for a very small viscosity parameter a reproduces well the characteristic features of SS 433, such as the relativistic jets with $\~$0.26c, the small collimation degree of the jets, the mass-outflow rate of ${\ge}5{\times}10^{-7}M{\bigodot}yr^{-1}$, and the formation of the X-ray iron emission lines.
A package to transport high-level radioactive materials is required to withstand normal transport and hypothetical accident conditions pursuant to the IAEA and domestic regulations. The package should maintain the structural safety not to release radioactive material in any condition. The structural safety of the package has been evaluated by tests using proto-type or scaled-down models, however, the method by analysis is gradually utilized due to recent advancement of computers and computer codes. In this paper, to evaluate the structural safety of a radioisotope package of the KAERI, the three dimensional impact analyses under 9m free drop and 1m puncture were performed with an explicit finite-element code, the LS-DYNA3D code. The maximum stress intensity on each part was calculated and the structural safety of the package was evaluated in accordance with the regulations.
The effects of surface roughness on a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated by performing direct numerical simulations of TBLs over rough and smooth walls. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was varied in the range $Re_{\theta}=300{\sim}1400$. The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height was $k=1.5{\theta}_{in}$, which corresponds to $k/{\delta}=0.045{\sim}0.125$. To avoid generating a rough wall inflow, which is prohibitively difficult, a step change from smooth to rough was placed $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. The spatially-developing characteristics of the rough-wall TBL were examined. Along the streamwise direction, the friction velocity approached a constant value and a self-preserving form of the turbulent stress was obtained. Introduction of the roughness elements affected the turbulent stress not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer. Despite the roughness-induced increase of the turbulent stress in the outer layer, the roughness had only a relatively small effect on the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor in the outer layer. Inspection of the triple products of the velocity fluctuations revealed that introducing the roughness elements onto the smooth wall had a marked effect on vertical turbulent transport across the whole TBL. By contrast, good surface similarity in the outer layer was obtained for the third-order moments of the velocity fluctuations.
Apoptotic cell death, characterized by DNA fragmentation and morphological changes, has previously been shown to occur in vascular endothelial cells cultured with hydrogen peroxide. The present study examined the induction of apoptosis by hydrogen peroxide and whether pyruvate, a key glycolytic intermediate and $\alpha$-keto-monocarboxylate, can inhibit the apoptotic effects in bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells(BPAECs). Culture with 500uM hydrogen peroxide resulted in 30% cell death and induced morphological changes and DNA fragmentation. Cell injury was inhibited by the treatment with pyruvate. Pyruvate(0.1-5.0mM), and cell viability increased in a dose-dependent manner. In the presence of pyruvate(10~20mM), the viability was improved to over 95%. In contrast, treatment with lactate, a reduced form of phyuvate, did not protect against cell death oxidative stress-induced loss of viability and apoptosis was examined with $\alpha$-cyano-3-hydroxycinnarmate(COHC) as a selective mitochondrial monocarboxylate transport blocker. Incubation with COHC(500uM) did not significantly affect cell viability in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The cytoprotection by pyruvate(3mM)against hydrogen peroxide stress was abolished by COHC. This indicates that the cytoprotection by pyruvate against oxidative stress in endothelial cells is mediated, at least in part, by mitochondrial pyruvate uptake and hence endothelial enerygetics. However, cytosolic mechanisms related, at least in part, by mitochondrial pyruvate uptake and hence endothelial energetics. However, cytosolic mechanisms related to the glutathione system may also contribute. The results suggest that pyruvate has therapeutic potential in the treatment of oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity associated with increased apoptosis.
The IHX (Intermediate Heat eXchanger) for a pool-type SFR (Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor) system transfers heat from the primary high temperature sodium to the intermediate cold temperature sodium. The upper structure of the IHX is a coaxial structure designed to form a flow path for both the secondary high temperature and low temperature sodium. The coaxial structure of the IHX consists of a central downcomer and riser for the incoming and outgoing intermediate sodium, respectively. The IHX of a pool-type SFR is supported at the upper surface of the reactor head with an IHX support structure that connects the IHX riser cylinder to the reactor head. The reactor head is generally maintained at the low temperature regime, but the riser cylinder is exposed in the elevated temperature region. The resultant complicated temperature distribution of the co-axial structure including the IHX support structure may induce a severe thermal stress distribution. In this study, the structural feasibility of the current upper support structure concept is investigated through a preliminary stress analysis and an alternative design concept to accommodate the IHTS (Intermediate Heat Transport System) piping expansion loads and severe thermal stress is proposed. Through the structural analysis it is found that the alternative design concept is effective in reducing the thermal stress and acquiring structural integrity.
Recently, there has been considerable research in the field of application of Laser-Arc hybrid welding for superstructures, such as ship-structures, transport vehicles etc. However, the study on heat distribution and welding residual stress of hybrid weld by numerical simulation leaves much to be desired. Therefore, in this study, an optimized welding condition and numerical simulation for hybrid welding, using previous numerical analysis to calculate the heat source for hybrid welding, has been analyzed. For this purpose, fundamental welding phenomena of the hybrid process, using Laser and, is investigated. In order to calculate temperature and residual stress distribution in hybrid welds, a finite element heat source model is developed on the basis of experimental results and characteristics of temperature. Residual stress distribution in hybrid welds are understood from the result of simulation, and compared with the experimental values.
The checking stresses in the Chinese codes for reinforced concrete (RC) or prestressed concrete (PC) bridges are aimed for the thin-web beam, which cannot reflect the actual behavior of the modern structures. The incompleteness of the checking stresses could give rise to the deficiency in the design and calculation, and unable to reveal the reason of some common cracks in the structure. In this paper, the complete stress checklist for RC or PC girder bridges are listed, as well as the corresponding crack shapes. The expression of the complete checking stresses is proposed in details. Spatial Grid Model can reflect all the concerned stresses in the structure. Through the comparison of the calculation results from the spatial grid model and the solid model, it is seen that the spatial grid model can reflect load effects such as shear lag effect, thin-wall effect and local effect. The stresses obtained from the spatial grid model could help engineers to have a good understanding of the structural behavior. Meanwhile, the stress checklist provides the information for analyzing and solving the deficiency in the structure.

Abiotic stress adversely affects crop growth worldwide. Drought of the major abiotic stresses have the most significant impact on all of the crop. The main objective of this study was to assess the effects of drought stress on photochemical performance and vitality of maize (Zea mays L.). The photochemical characteristics were analyzed in the context of period of drought stress during the maize growth. Drought experiment was carried out for four weeks, thereafter, the drought treated maize was re-watered. The polyphasic OJIP fluorescence transient was used to evaluate the behavior of photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI) during the entire experiment period. In drought stress, the performance Index (PI) level was reached earlier when compared to the controls. For the screening of drought stress tolerance the drought factor index (DFI) of each variety was calculated as follow DFI= log(A) + 2log(B). All the fourteen cultivars show DFI ranged from -0.69 to 0.30, meaning less useful in selection of drought tolerant cultivars. PI and electron transport flux values of fourteen cultivars were to indicate reduction of photosynthetic performance during the early vegetative stage under drought stress. In conclusion, DFI and energy flux parameters can be used as photochemical and physiological index.
Microcracks can rapidly grow and develop in high-strength steels used in offshore structures. It is important to render these microcracks harmless to ensure the safety and reliability of offshore structures. Here, the dependence of the aspect ratio (As) of the maximum depth of harmless crack (ahlm) was evaluated under three different conditions considering the threshold stress intensity factor (Δkth) and residual stress of offshore structural steel F690. The threshold stress intensity factor and fatigue limit of fatigue crack propagation, dependent on crack dimensions, were evaluated using Ando's equation, which considers the plastic behavior of fatigue and the stress ratio. ahlm by peening was analyzed using the relationship between Δkth obtained by Ando's equation and Δkth obtained by the sum of applied stress and residual stress. The plate specimen had a width 2W = 12 mm and thickness t = 20 mm, and four value of As were considered: 1.0, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.1. The ahlm was larger as the compressive residual stress distribution increased. Additionally, an increase in the values of As and Δkth(l) led to a larger ahlm. With a safety factor (N) of 2.0, the long-term safety and reliability of structures constructed using F690 can be secured with needle peening. It is necessary to apply a more sensitive non-destructive inspection technique as a non-destructive inspection method for crack detection could not be used to observe fatigue cracks that reduced the fatigue limit of smooth specimens by 50% in the three types of residual stresses considered. The usefulness of non-destructive inspection and non-damaging techniques was reviewed based on the relationship between ahlm, aNDI (minimum crack depth detectable in non-destructive inspection), acr N (crack depth that reduces the fatigue limit to 1/N), and As.
