  • Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in data traffic, driven primarily by the explosive growth of the Internet. Optical networking is believed as a key solution to keep up with the growth, thus, the most pressing issue is how to manage and control large optical networks. Currently, provisioning end-to-end connections across the transport network has involved the network operator, leading to long provisioning times in an era when customers are demanding shorter provisioning time. To address this critical issue, new control intelligence is being studied for use within optical networks to shorten provisioning time. Both the IETF and the ITU-T have been aggressively defining many aspects of a control plane for the next generation convergence transport network. Basically, they are based on the distributed control scheme. In this Paper, we suey the applicability of the centralized control scheme for the provisioning control of optical transport network to utilize its inherent advantages over the distributed control scheme. We discuss new central control architecture, and control procedure. Also, we examine the applicability of the existing IETF routing and signaling protocols to the new control concepts, and then, we propose the additional routing and signaling information elements.

  • Korea has launched the world-wide first terrestrial UHD broadcast services on May 31, 2017. While the existing HDTV broadcast services use MPEG-2 TS (Tranport Stream) standard for multiplexing and delivering compressed media with additional data, the terrestrial UHD broadcast services use MMT (MPEG Media Transport) standard, which is the next-generation standard beyond MPEG-2 TS. However, the production cost of UHD contents is so high that only a part of the total broadcast time is filled with UHD contents and the UHD time portion is planned to be gradually increased. On the other hand, the ATSC 3.0 standard that uses MMT is not yet used in full-fledged broadcast services in North America. Hence MMT broadcast equipment is still at an early stage with high prices. In this paper we implemented a multi-thread software running on an ordinary PC that can be utilized to realize a low-cost converter that converts the output of an existing MPEG-2 TS multiplexer to an MMTP (MMT Protocol) packet stream. We also verified the functionality of the software through experiments.

  • In this paper, we study QoS(Quality of Service) control protocols and the effect using MAC/PHY parameters of client device in mobile network. We proposes the way of controling the bit-rate by estimating the channel condition of the client with measured MAC/PHY parameters which is sent from the client. With the proposed method, more accurate available bit-rate can be estimated compared to conventional protocol, RTCP(Real-time Transport Control Protocol). The accurate bit-rate estimation can decrease wasted bit-rate and transport delay. In the result of the advantages, the transported video quality can be enhanced. In this paper, we show the effects of enhancement using client's the field data measured in WiMAX.

  • IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) has become the prevailing solution for wireless Internet access while transport control protocol (TCP) is the dominant transport-layer protocol in the Internet. It is known that, in an infrastructure-based WLAN with multiple stations carrying long-lived TCP flows, the number of TCP stations that are actively contending to access the wireless channel remains very small. Hence, the aggregate TCP throughput is basically independent of the total number of TCP stations. This phenomenon is due to the closed-loop nature of TCP flow control and the bottleneck downlink (i.e., access point-to-station) transmissions in infrastructure-based WLANs. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive analytical model to study TCP dynamics in infrastructure-based 802.11 WLANs. We calculate the average number of active TCP stations and the aggregate TCP throughput using our model for given total number of TCP stations and the maximum TCP receive window size. We find out that the default minimum contention window sizes specified in the standards (i.e., 31 and 15 for 802.11b and 802.11a, respectively) are not optimal in terms of TCP throughput maximization. Via ns-2 simulation, we verify the correctness of our analytical model and study the effects of some of the simplifying assumptions employed in the model. Simulation results show that our model is reasonably accurate, particularly when the wireline delay is small and/or the packet loss rate is low.

  • In ISO MPEG, MPEG-H has been standardized to smoothly deliver huge volume of ultra-high resolution videos over heterogeneous network environments for the consumers. In the MPEG-H standard, MMT(MPEG Media Transport) protocol is the next generation MPEG media transport technology to provide hybrid media delivery over heterogeneous environments. It is important to sustain accurate media synchronization to provide ultra-high resolution video services over heterogeneous network environments. In this paper, we propose and verify an in-band media synchronization scheme to circumvent the problem of additional session setup and excessive traffic problems of the conventional out-of-band media synchronization supported by the MMT technology.

  • In this paper, we construct a commercial 4K UHD(Ultra High Definition) streaming device that utilizes a 5G mobile communication network as a transport channel and conduct a streaming performance test. It uses RTP(Realtime Transport Protocol) which has transmission quality monitoring capability as a transmission protocol to apply adaptive streaming. In addition, it provides the function to adjust the encoding rate of the video signal so that encoding can be optimized for the change in the bandwidth of the transmission channel. Through the performance test, it is confirmed that the H.265 encoding rate for 4K UHD signal is 48.69Mbps, the average glass-to-glass delay time is 293.60ms, and the average time difference between video and audio for lip sync is 120ms. With the result of performance test, it is shown that the streaming device is applied to 4K UHD Streaming device over 5G mobile communication network.

  • Multi-protocol Label Switching is a comparatively new technology based on the association of labels with routes and the use of labels to forward packets. MPLS can be used for transport of any level 3 protocol over any level 2 technology. Differentiated Services define a model for implementing scalable differentiation of QoS in the Internet. The inherent characteristics of MPLS make it a very good candidate for providing Differentiated Services. In this paper we describe various approaches which can be used to support differentiated services in MPLS environments.
