  • This paper describes the design of a size-reduced ring hybrid coupler for microwave band using an artificial dielectric substrate(ADS). ADS structure adopts the second substrate on which has lots of the metalized via-holes. The effective capacitance and effective dielectric constant per unit length of ADS increases compared to the normal substrate due to the via-holes. This enables the physical length of microstrip transmission line to be reduced by adopting ADS instead of the normal substrate. In order to present an example of size-reduction of microwave wireless circuit by ADS, a size-reduced 3GHz ring hybrid coupler is designed, fabricated and measured in this work. The designed coupler has the smaller size from the normal one by 65% due to the ADS, while no critical degradation from ideal performances is observed. The measured power division ratio at two output ports are -3.05dB and -3.135dB, respectively. In addition, the phase differences are 3o for in-phase division and 176o for out of phase split. The measured performances are so similar to ideal ones, and prove the design of size-reduced ring hybrid coupler using ADS is successful.

  • When users of mobile environments move fast or slow into a number of base stations(BS) and request the services of continuous media data such as video or audio, this study examines what the caching has the usefulness in mobile environments. Namely, to reduce packet disconnections and network overheads in mobile environments and minimize transmission delay time, we propose domain-based hierarchical caching structure and study whether application of caching has the usefulness. So we have a model based on user environments and hierarchical network structure to process continuous media services, and analyze the usefulness of caching which depends on the mobile patterns of user and the locations of caching nodes. And then, we research whether caching offers the usefulness in mobile environments. As the result, we are able to see that an adaptable application of caching is needed because the hit ratio and the number of replacement vary in large according to mobile patterns of user and locations of caching.

  • Mobile ad hoc networks suffer from the re-construction of the routing path as a node on the path moves away and/or fails. In this paper we propose a multipath routing scheme, designed for the network based on the directional antennas, in which a new path is quickly recovered by do-touring to an alternative neighbor called braid. Simulations are conducted in random networks with 50 nodes uniformly deployed in a $1,000m{\times}1,000M$ area where, all nodes have a transmission range of 250m and the average node moving speed varies from 0 to 10m/s. The proposed approach under the ideal antenna with K(>1) directional sectors achieves better results compared with the case of K=1, the omnidirectional antenna model, in terms of the metrics: packet delivery ratio and average number of hops for the routing paths. As further study, a scheme to alleviate the heavy amount of latency accompanied by the rout setup is urgently required.

  • In this paper, we analysis to consider the performance of PSPM (Phase Shift Pulse-position Modulation), the one of the low power communication technique, in near-field underwater sound channel by sea trial. PSPM is a QPSK(Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) modulation combined with PPM(Pulse Position Modulation) for low power communication in WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network). It is known that the bandwidth efficiency of PSPM is lower than conventional PSK but the power efficiency increases. In this paper, we will analyze the BER performance of PSPM using data acquired from the sea trials. The BER of QPSK was $6.04{\times}10^{-2}$, PSPM was $3.5{\times}10^{-1}$. Also, PSNR of QPSK was 9.37 dB and in case of PSPM was 9.11 dB.

  • Planar antennas are very efficient for the use of the out-door data transmission applications due to their low-profile characteristics. But the size of the antenna in UHF band blocks the practical usage. In this paper, a miniaturized planar antenna is investigated for the application of AMR system in UHF band. The designed antenna is fabricated in the form of the microstrip patch on the FR-4 substrate. The miniaturization is achieved by slot-loading on the patch. First, effects of simple slots on the size reduction are analyzed, followed by the design using more complex slots resulting in the reduction ratio of 37.9% in 425.6 MHz and bandwidth of 3.8 MHz. The effort of epoxy coating for the protection is also investigated.

  • Large concrete structures are prone to cracks and damages over time from human usage, weathers, and other environmental attacks such as flood, earthquakes, and hurricanes. The health of the concrete structures should be monitored regularly to ensure safety. A reliable method of real time communications can facilitate more frequent structural health monitoring (SHM) updates from hard to reach positions, enabling crack detections of embedded concrete structures as they occur to avoid catastrophic failures. By implementing an unconventional mode of communication that utilizes guided stress waves traveling along the concrete structure itself, we may be able to free structural health monitoring from costly (re-)installation of communication wires. In stress-wave communications, piezoelectric transducers can act as actuators and sensors to send and receive modulated signals carrying concrete status information. The new generation of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based smart aggregates cause multipath propagation in the homogeneous concrete channel, which presents both an opportunity and a challenge for multiple sensors communication. We propose a time reversal based pulse position modulation (TR-PPM) communication for stress wave communication within the concrete structure to combat multipath channel dispersion. Experimental results demonstrate successful transmission and recovery of TR-PPM using stress waves. Compared with PPM, we can achieve higher data rate and longer link distance via TR-PPM. Furthermore, TR-PPM remains effective under low signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. This work also lays the foundation for implementing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) stress wave communication networks in concrete channels.

  • This study elucidates the uplift behaviors of the straight-sided and belled shafts. The field uplift load tests were carried out on 18 straight-sided and 15 belled shafts at the three collapsible loess sites under an arid environment on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. Both the site conditions and the load tests were documented comprehensively. In general, the uplift load-displacement curves of the straight-sided and belled shafts approximately exhibited an initial linear, a curvilinear transition, and a final linear region, but did not provide a well defined peak or asymptotic value of the load, and therefore their uplift resistances should be interpreted from the load test results using an appropriate criterion. Nine representative uplift resistance interpretation criteria were used to define the "interpreted failure load" for each of the load tests, and all of these interpreted uplift resistances were normalized by the failure threshold, $T_{L2}$, obtained using the $L_1-L_2$ method. These load test data were compared statistically and graphically. For the straight-sided and belled shafts, the normalized uplift load-displacement curves were respectively established by the plots that related the mean interpreted uplift resistance ratio against the mean displacement at the corresponding interpreted criteria, and the comparisons of the normalized load-displacement curves were made. Specific recommendations for the designs of uplift belled and straight-sided shafts in the loess were given, in terms of both capacity and displacement.

  • In wireless sensor networks, sensors need to communicate with each other to send their sensing data to the administration node and so they are susceptible to many attacks like garbage packet injection that cannot be prevented by using traditional cryptographic approaches. A behavior-based detection is used to defend against such attacks in which some specialized monitoring nodes overhear the communications of their neighbors to detect bad packets. As monitoring nodes use more energy, it is desirable to use the minimal number of monitoring nodes to cover the whole or maximal part of the network. The monitoring nodes can either be selected among the deployed normal nodes or differ in type from normal nodes. In this study, we have developed an algorithm for selecting the predefined number of monitoring nodes needed to cover the maximum number of normal nodes when the different types of normal nodes and monitoring nodes are deployed. We also have investigated experimentally how the number of monitoring nodes and their transmission range affect the connection ratio of the monitoring nodes and the coverage of the normal nodes.

  • Background: African swine fever (ASF) is an infectious viral disease of domestic pigs that presents as a hemorrhagic fever, and for which no effective vaccine is available. The disease has a serious negative social and economic impact on pig keepers. There is limited information on the potential risk factors responsible for the spread of ASF in South Kivu. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the potential risk factors associated with ASF infection in suspected ASF virus (ASFV)-infected pigs. Methods: We sampled whole blood from 391 pigs. Additionally, 300 pig farmers were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Viral DNA was detected by using the real-time polymerase chain reaction technique. Results: The majority of pigs sampled, 78% (95% confidence interval [CI], 74.4-82.6), were of local breeds. Over half, 60.4% (95% CI, 55.5-65.2), were female, and most of them, 90.5% (95% CI, 87.6-93.4), were adult pigs (> 1 year old). Viral DNA was detected in 72 of the 391 sampled pigs, indicating an overall infection rate of 18.4% (95% CI, 14.5-22.4). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed several risk factors positively associated with ASFV infection: feeding with swill in pen (odds ratio [OR], 3.8; 95% CI, 2.12-6.77); mixed ages of pigs in the same pen (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.99-5.57); introduction of new animals to the farm (OR, 5.4; 95% CI, 1.91-15.28). The risk factors that were negatively (protective) correlated with ASFV positivity were the presence of male animals and the use of an in-pen breeding system. Conclusion: Local pig farmers should be encouraged to adopt proper husbandry and feeding practices in order to increase the number of ASF-free farms.

  • In Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) Application, routing protocol is essential to ensure successful data transmission to all nodes. Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) Protocol is a reactive routing protocol that is mostly used in MANET applications. However, the protocol causes Route Request (RREQ) message flooding issue due to the broadcasting method at the route request stage to find a path to a particular destination, where the RREQ will be rebroadcast if no Request Response (RREP) message is received. A scalable neighbor-based routing (SNBR) protocol was then proposed to overcome the issue. In the SNBR protocol, the RREQ message is only rebroadcast if the number of neighbor nodes less than a certain fix number, known as drop factor. However, since a network always have a dynamic characteristic with a dynamic number of neighbor nodes, the fix drop factor in SNBR protocol could not provide an optimal flooding problem solution in a low dense network environment, where the RREQ message is continuously rebroadcast RREQ message until reach the fix drop factor. To overcome this problem, a new broadcasting method as Dynamic SNBR (DSNBR) is proposed, where the drop factor is determined based on current number of neighbor nodes. This method rebroadcast the extra RREQ messages based on the determined dynamic drop factor. The performance of the proposed DSNBR is evaluated using NS2 and compared with the performance of the existing protocol; AODV and SNBR. Simulation results show that the new routing protocol reduces the routing request overhead, energy consumption, MAC Collision and enhances end-to-end delay, network coverage ratio as a result of reducing the extra route request messages.
