Extremely long-span transmission tower-line system is an indispensable portion of an electricity transmission system, and its failures or collapse can impact on the entire electricity grid, affect the modern life, and cause great economic losses. It is therefore imperative to investigate the failure and safety of the transmission tower subjected to ground motions. In the present study, a detailed finite element (FE) model of a representative extremely long-span transmission tower-line system is established. A segmental damage indicator (SDI) is proposed to quantitatively assess the damage level of each segment of the transmission tower under earthquakes. Additionally, parametric studies are conducted to investigate the influence of different ground motions and incident angles on the ultimate capacity and weakest segment of the transmission tower. Finally, the collapse fragility curve in terms of the maximum SDI value and PGA is plotted for the exampled transmission tower. The results show that the proposed SDI can quantitatively assess the damage level of the segments, and thus determine the ultimate capacity and weakest segment of the transmission tower. Moreover, the different ground motions and incident angles have a significant influence on the SDI values of the transmission tower, and the collapse fragility curve is utilized to evaluate the collapse resistant capacity of the transmission tower subjected to ground motions.
The electrical discharge of high voltage direct current(HVDC) overhead transmission line generate audible noise, radio noise, electric field, ion current and induced voltage on the ground. These items are major factors to design environmentally friendly configuration of DC transmission line. Therefore, HVDC transmission lines must be designed to keep all these corona effects within acceptable levels. Several techniques have been used to assess interference caused by ions on HVDC overhead transmission line. In this study, to assess the ion characteristic of DC line, the ion current density and induced voltage caused by ion flow were measured by plate electrodes manufactured from a metal flat board and charged bodies, respectively. The charged body has two types of cylinder and cylindrical plate. From the results of calibration experiments, the sensitivity of flat electrode and charged body can be obtained. At present, the developed system is used to investigate the ion generation characteristics of Kochang DC ${\pm}500kV$ test line.
This paper discusses the effects of ECC (Earth Continuity Conductor) for reducing the level of induced sheath overvoltages at the single point bonded section of combined transmission lines which are mixed underground power cable with overhead line in one T/L. In previous papers, the characteristics of ECC on only underground power cable systems were sufficiently analyzed. However, the result of only underground power cable systems are totally different from that of combined transmission lines because ECC is commonly grounded with overhead grounding wire at mesh of cable head. Therefore, in this paper, the installation effects of ECC have been variously analyzed considering the three kinds of fault positions, cable formation of duct and trefoil, spacing between phase conductor and ECC, and the change of overhead transmission line section length on 154kV combined transmission line. Finally, simulation results show that ECC can effectively reduce the induced sheath voltage.
Korea takes part in overseas business by use of accumulated advanced technology through construction of the worlds first 765kV double circuit transmission system designed with pure local technology. 'Development Study on the Power System Network Analysis in Myanmar' was received in the year 2001 and was completed in the year 2002. The following project,'Feasibility Study and Basic Designs for the 500kV Transmission System in Myanmar' has been in progress since January, 2004. With regards to this project the master plan for the Myanmar long term power system was submitted in January 2005, and now the basic designs for the 500kV transmission system construction are in progress. Technical data for the design of the transmission line is calculated using a very complex numerical formula that is almost impossible to be completed by hand. So the transmission technical calculation system was developed to calculate and support Myanmar technical data for the design of transmission line with respect to factors such as wind prossure load, tower design data conductor design data and insulator design data on the basis of weather conditions for the Myamar transmission line design area of the Myanmar 500kV trans- mission line construction basic design.
Nowadays, it is becoming difficult to secure a transmission line route when a new transmission line is constructed due to social environment and resident complaints. As existing urban areas are expanded and new cities are constructed, the necessity of high-capacity underground power transmission has been increasing because of load concentration in downtown areas. In North America, Europe and Japan, the research has been carried out for 2nd generation gas insulated transmission lines(GIL) which is more environmentally friendly and economical compared to previous GILs. The new GILs have been applied to real power systems from early 2000s. In South Korea, GIL is being considered as a possible solution for replacing 345kV high-capacity overhead transmission lines with underground transmission ones, so KEPCO is planning to develop and apply a new 362kV rated GIL underground transmission lines instead of overhead transmission lines. In this paper, the overvoltage generated at the combined transmission line adapting GIL was reviewed using EMTP.

Methods of Alternating Noise Canceling were previously developed for the optical instrumentation;one using a dual photo sensor and another using a single photo sensor that could cancel normal mode noise on a transmission line, even if the noise was of equal status noise. But the methods could not remove noise on sensor line. This paper discusses a new method of using a photo sensor with a resistance sensordummy, effectively canceling equal status normal mode noise not only on a sensor line but also on a transmission line of an optical instrumentation. The accuracy of this method has been verified by experiments using sinusoidal wave as an equal status noise on a sensor line and/or rectangular wave as an equal status wide band noise on a transmission line respectively.
Distance realy is tripped by the line impedance calculated at the relay point. Accordingly the accurate operation depends on the precise calculation of line impedance. Impedance can be accurately calculated in case of overhead line. However, in case of power cables or combined transmission lines, impedance can not be accurately calculated because cable systems have the sheath, grounding resistance, and sheath voltage limiters(SVLs). There are also several grounding systems in cable systems. Therefore, if there is a fault in cable systems, these terms will severely be caused much error to calculation of impedance. Accordingly the proper compensation should be developed for the correct operation of the distance relay. This paper presents the distance calculating algorithm in combined transmission line with power cable using wavelet transform. In order to achieve such purpose, judgement method to discriminate the fault section in both sections was proposed using D1 coefficient summation in db4. And also, error compensation value was proposed for correct calculation of impedance in power cables section.
Dynamic analysis of a transmission line which is compensated by a FACTS device such as STATCOM, SSSC and UPFC is carried out in this paper and the impacts on conventional line protection methods such as the DCPM (Differential Current Protection Method) and the DPM (Distance Protection Method) are reviewed. A refined DCRM is proposed to detect faults properly regardless of the FACTS operation. The proposed method is applied to a FACTS-compensated line with a variety of faults and is verified by simulation results. An adaptive DPM on a FACTS-compensated line was proposed previously in the literature. In order to emphasize the necessity of the modified DPM, the conventional DPM is applied to a FACTS-compensated system. Significant factors such as fault types, fault locations, and fault resistances as well as FACTS device types are considered for relaying setting.
