  • This paper represents a study on the conceptual design of new automatic bicycle transmission. The gear change in a commercial bicycle is carried out by moving the chain between sprockets. By the use of a multiple sprocket for speed change the power loss and transmission shock may occur. To solve the problem of bicycle transmission, the improved solution was derived by the technical contradiction matrix of TRIZ. The conceptual solution is one sprocket which replaces the function of multiple sprockets and adapts actively to the pitch of chain. And it was confirmed to be an adequate design through the Independence Axiom of design axiom.

  • Automatic transmissions are standard equipment in most automotive vehicles because they provide smooth speed shifting and a compact design with multiple speed ratios. Their structure consists mainly of planetary gear sets as power-transmitting devices and brakes and clutches as shifting devices. Several forward and one reverse speed ratios are achieved by actuating shifting devices to connect gears, input and output shafts, and the transmission case. In the development of a new transmission, kinematic configurations reflecting the transmission concept design are required, and the ability of the new concept design to be assembled without any interference among the connections must be demonstrated. In this study, an assemblability analysis of the kinematic configurations of a Ravigneaux-type automatic transmission was conducted with an assemblable example of an 8-speed Ravigneaux-type automatic transmission.

  • Because of the increases in international oil prices and the level of global warming, the automotive industry has much interest in developing green cars with high fuel efficiencies. In addition, researchers in Korea are actively responding to high oil prices and $CO_2$ emission regulations in many ways. One example is, the multi-mode hybrid system, which is being studied to improve its performance. Because a multi-mode hybrid system is able to overcome the weaknesses of a system that uses simple planetary gears, excellent fuel efficiency and driving performances are the key features of the system. This paper analyzes the driving performance of the power-train system of GM-2MT70, which consists of one engine, two electric motors, one simple planetary gear, one double planetary gear, two clutches, and two brakes. The driving performance of the system's steady state is analyzed using performance modeling. The dynamic performance is analyzed using Matlab Simulink.

  • An industrial robot noise has various noise sources such as gears, motors, bearings, and controller fans. Among these, gears are the most dominant source for noise. The gear noise, caused by tooth profile, elastic deformation, machining error and wear, is directly correlated with the transmission error of mating gear. Due to the fact that has several axis and many gears, it is difficult to understand the characteristics of the vibration and noise of robots. In this study, some advanced analysis techniques based on digital signal processing such as power spectrum, time spectral map, RPM map, and etc., were applied for locating the dominant frequency components of the robot noises and identifying their sources. In addition, sound quality analysis was performed in order to evaluate the operator's annoyance. The noise and vibration measurements were carried out at several points during the operation of each axis considering the effect of load and posture of the robot. Eased on the results, proper countermeasures to reduce excessive noise level have been suggested considering the characteristics of sources.

  • This study examined the tribological characteristics of the drive shaft and axle system in vehicles. The first drive shaft example contained end play for a CV joint that transferred part of the transmission power to the wheel. The joint part of the drive shaft was deformed because of reduced durability due to wear. Thus, vibrations caused the body to shake and become unbalanced when the drive shaft transferred the power. The second example was the cross-section of a shaft that connected the slip-connection of the propeller shaft on the input side to the yoke flange of the output side; the durability was reduced because of corrosion. End play caused by wear between the bearing and cross-section shaft appeared to cause shaking. In the third example, a grease leak reduced lubrication and thus caused damage to the hub bearing and inside the knuckle. The failure was produced by sticking. The fourth example had noise produced by the gear and gear transfer. This was due to the backlash of the pinion and few ring gears for the differential gear. Therefore, drive shaft and axle systems must be thoroughly checked and managed to minimize and reduce failure phenomena.

  • Gears are reliable and efficient power transmission elements. They have been widely used in all kinds of machinery. Nowadays, resource conservation energy conservation environmental improvements from the request of the compact, light weight, high efficiency, low cost Higher efficiency is required. Tooth root and bottom profiles of cylindrical gears affect bending fatigue life, but they are hard to measure with conventional gear measuring machine(GMM), because GMM is normally customized to measure only gear working flanks. The authors try to develop a new type of GMM by installing an extra 3D scanning probe and control software to measure tooth root and bottom profiles. First, in order to measure in various directions, a 3D scanning probe has been attached to the GMM developed. Next, calibration algorithm has been developed. Deviations of the calibration results are measured and it is found that systematic error must be caused by heat from driving motors. A new alternative GMM with driving motors generating less heat was designed and two GMMs are compared. Finally, 3 Dimension measurement of tooth root and bottom profiles of cylindrical gears is described.

  • The reduction unit is one of the most important components in railway cars, due to the transmission of torque from the motor to the wheels. Faulty reduction gears in high-speed trains result from excessive wear on the gear or damage to the gear. These types of gear defects have a significant effect on high-speed rail operation and safety; thus, a diagnosis system for the reduction unit is needed. Vibration diagnosis technology is one of the most effective diagnostics. In this paper, the vibration parameters of a reduction unit were evaluated during a driving-gear test and a full-vehicle test, using kurtosis and the crest factor. These tests were performed under normal operating conditions; a specimen tester was used to diagnose problems in defective gears.

  • The application of helical gears in crucial parts of automotive transmissions has been steadily increasing due to their higher power transfer performance compared to spur gears. However, the traditional gear manufacturing methods such as hobbing and deburring require large cycle times with expensive production lines so that there have been intensive efforts trying to manufacture gears via forging processes. Although forging processes for spur and bevel type gears have been developed on the practical level, the manufacturing of helical gears is still dependent on the traditional cutting process. Therefore, this paper seeks to develop a cold forward extrusion process for the helical gear with the pitch diameter of 43.5mm and a helix angle of $18.4^{\circ}$. A forward extrusion process was used due to the relatively small diameter of the target geometry. The material deforming behavior influenced by the die geometry was examined by using CAE analysis. Finally, it was found that the helical gear manufactured by the developed extrusion process satisfied the dimensional accuracy and mechanical characteristics for automotive transmissions.

  • Planetary gear sets are widely used in power transmission components, which have high efficiency and good durability. Their most important design parameter is the load-sharing characteristics among several planetary gears. In this study, the load sharing of planetary gears was analyzed according to the carrier pinhole position error of planetary gear sets. The loads acting on planetary gears varied with the pinhole position error of the carrier, and the load sharing of planetary gears improved as the input load increased. In addition, the load of the planetary gear with a carrier pinhole position error was relatively higher than that of other planetary gears without carrier pinhole position errors. This trend appeared more clearly in the non-floating-type carrier than the floating-type carrier.

  • To enhance the strength of gears for transmission, Generally caburizing heat treatment is applied. But there are some problems in this technology the distortion of gears during heat treatment process, and the discontinuity of manufacturing process. For these reasons, the high frequency induction hardening process is widely used. This method is one of the surface hardening process to improve the wear resistance and fatigue life of the machine components. In this study, to compare the bending fatigue strength of caburized gear with that of induction hardened gear, bending fatigue testing of gears with two different cases was performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled fatigue testing machine and double tooth bending fatigue test fixture. Fatigue life distributions at constant stress levels were established directly from fatigue data. For gear design, the fatigue strength distribution at specified life is more important. This distribution is obtained by statical transformation from fatigue life distribution. Reliability of bending fatigue strength was estimated by P-S-N curves and Weibull distribution.
