  • Ethernet Passive Optical Network(EPON), which is one of PON technologies for realizing FTTx(Fiber-To-The-Curb/Home/Office), can cost-effectively construct optical access networks. In addition, EPON can provide high transmission rate up to 10Gbps and it is compatible with existing customer devices equipped with Ethernet card. To effectively control frame transmission from ONUs to OLT EPON can use Multi-Point Control Protocol(MPCP) with additional control functions in addition to Media Access Control(MAC) protocol function. For EPON, many researches on intra- and inter-ONU scheduling algorithms have been performed. Among the inter-ONU scheduling algorithms, IPS(Interleaved Polling with Stop) based on polling scheme is efficient because OLT assigns available time portion to each ONU given the request information from all ONUs. Since the IPS needs an idle time period on uplink between two consecutive frame transmission periods, it wastes time without frame transmissions. In this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm to increase the channel utilization on uplink and evaluate its performance using simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed Two-phase Cycle Danamic Bandwidth Allocation(TCDBA) algorithm improves the throughput about 15%, compared with the IPS and Fast Gate Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation(FGDBA). Also, the average transmission time of the proposed algorithm is lower than those of other schemes.

  • In asynchronous communication data of specific area are used as all kinds of control characters. Therefore, data of this area must be converted to other character and transmitted followed by control prefix to prevent the misconception as control characters. This paper presents several methods for character conversion that prevent the lengthening of data and enhance the overall efficiency of communication by transmitting with a certain conversion and without control prefixes on control-like characters occurring when data are transmitted with ciphering onto asynchronous communication path. For such conversion, the scope of transmitted data was sup-posed and efforts were made not to exceed that scope. Experiments showed that method is better in communication speed than the existing ones and the ciphering has no problem by confirming the randomness of ciphered data.

  • This paper proposes an efficient interference control scheme for vehicular moving networks. The features of the proposed scheme are as follows: radio resources are separated into two resource groups to avoid interference between the cellular and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links; V2V links are able to share the same radio resources for an improvement in the resource efficiency; and vehicles can adaptively adjust their transmission power according to the interference among the V2V links (based on the distributed power control (DPC) scheme derived using the network utility maximization method). The DPC scheme, which is the main feature of the proposed scheme, can improve both the reliability and data rate of a V2V link. Simulation results show that the DPC scheme improves the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of V2V links by more than 4 dB, and the sum data rate of the V2V links by 15% and 137% compared with conventional schemes.

  • For the efficient transmission of burst data in the time varying wireless channel, opportunistic scheduling is one of the important techniques to maximize multiuser diversity gain. In this paper, we propose a distributed opportunistic scheduling scheme for wireless LAN network. A proportional fair scheduling, which is one of the opportunistic scheduling schemes, is used for centralized networks, whereas we design distributed proportional fair scheduling (DPFS) scheme and medium access control with distributed manner. In the proposed DPFS scheme, each receiver estimates channel condition and calculates independently its own priority with probabilistic manner, which can reduce excessive probing overhead required to gather the channel conditions of all receivers. We evaluate the proposed DPFS using extensive simulation and simulation results show that DPFS obtains higher network throughput than conventional scheduling schemes and has a flexibility to control the fairness and throughput by controlling the system parameter.

  • To cope with an increasing amount of data traffic, research efforts are being made to maximize the data rate by reducing the interference between the transmission nodes. This paper also focuses on interference control schemes utilizing antenna sub-array beam-forming. The first scheme relies on horizontal beam rotation which utilizes three types of narrow beam patterns. Different beam patterns are applied to transmit signals in rotating fashion to control the interference. The second scheme is based on user-specific sub-array beamforming, which uses the precoding matrix based on users' location and controls the amount of interference in the multi-user environment. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated using the computer simulation to demonstrate the performance enhancement.

  • In this paper, a transparency analysis and network-adaptive transport scheme are proposed in order to improve transparency of EBA-based force-reflecting teleoperation. EBA guarantees stability of force-reflecting teleoperation over network delay and loss but has limitation that it cannot overcome transparency deterioration of haptic interactions. The proposed transparency analysis quantifies the force feedback distortion caused by network delay and loss. Based on the analysis, the proposed haptic data synchronization and transmission rate control schemes adapt synchronization delay and transmission rate to current network state for more transparent haptic interaction. Through Matlab/Simulink simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed analysis provides an acceptable quantification method about haptic interaction quality and that the proposed haptic data transport scheme effectively improves haptic interaction quality with respect to network delays and losses.

  • This paper proposes a retransmission persistence control scheme for automatic retransmit request (ARQ) protocol to improve the reliability of a wireless link. Most existing ARQ protocols adopt a fixed retransmission persistence. If the ARQ protocol sets the retransmission persistence too low, there is a limitation in providing transmission reliability. On the other hand, if the ARQ protocol sets the retransmission persistence too high, it increases transmission delay and jitter. In order to figure out the problem, the proposed scheme considers the number of frames in the buffer in controlling the retransmission persistence; it improves the throughput of ARQ protocol by increasing the retransmission persistence when the number of frames is small and decreasing otherwise. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme decreases the transmission delay and jitter significantly comparing to the existing schemes.

  • Smart grid is a fully-automated, bi-directional, power transmission network based on the physical grid system, which combines sensor measurement, computer, information communication, and automatic control technology. Blockchain technology, with its security features, can be integrated with Smart Grids to provide secure and efficient power management and transmission. This paper dicusses the deployment of Blockchain technology in Smart Grid. It presents application areas and protocols in which blockchain can be applied to in securing smart grid. One application of each area is explored in detail, such as efficient peer-to-peer transaction, lower platform costs, faster processes, greater flexibility in power generation to transmission, distribution and power consumption in different energy storage systems, current barriers obstructing the implementation of blockchain applications with some level of maturity in financial services but concepts only in energy and other sectors. Wide range of energy applications suggesting a suitable blockchain architecture in smart grid operations, a sample block structure and the potential blockchain technicalities employed in it. Also, added with efficient data aggregation schemes based on the blockchain technology to overcome the challenges related to privacy and security in the smart grid. Later on, consensus algorithms and protocols are discussed. Monitoring of the usage and statistics of energy distribution systems that can also be used to remotely control energy flow to a particular area. Further, the discussion on the blockchain-based frameworks that helps in the diagnosis and maintenance of smart grid equipment. We have also discussed several commercial implementations of blockchain in the smart grid. Finally, various challenges have been discussed for integrating these technologies. Overall, it can be said at the present point in time that blockchain technology certainly shows a lot of potentials from a customer perspective too and should be further developed by market participants. The approaches seen thus far may have a disruptive effect in the future and might require additional regulatory intervention in an already tightly regulated energy market. If blockchains are to deliver benefits for consumers (whether as consumers or prosumers of energy), a strong focus on consumer issues will be needed.

  • Frequency reuse in a cellular wireless communication environment gives rise to a phenomenon of cochannel interference. This paper introduces a power control strategy for OFDM based communication systems operating in such an environment. Among the existing power control schemes, IWF(iterative waterfilling) is known to exhibit relatively good performance. However, it requires feedback of power level and bit allocation information for each subcarrier from a receiver to its associated transmitter, which can lead to a considerable overhead, especially for the case of employing large number of subcarriers. Motivated by this, we present a simplified power control scheme with reduced overhead feedback, which allocates some nonzero identical power to the subcarriers of which channel conditions are above a certain threshold and zero power to the other ones. Computer simulations show that the proposed strategy produces a good approximation to the performance of the IWF in terms of the transmission power level while it requires less overhead feedback.
