CASPER: Congestion Aware Selection of Path with Efficient Routing in Multimedia Networks

  • In earlier days, most of the data carried on communication networks was textual data requiring limited bandwidth. With the rise of multimedia and network technologies, the bandwidth requirements of data have increased considerably. If a network link at any time is not able to meet the minimum bandwidth requirement of data, data transmission at that path becomes difficult, which leads to network congestion. This causes delay in data transmission and might also lead to packet drops in the network. The retransmission of these lost packets would aggravate the situation and jam the network. In this paper, we aim at providing a solution to the problem of network congestion in mobile ad hoc networks [1, 2] by designing a protocol that performs routing intelligently and minimizes the delay in data transmission. Our Objective is to move the traffic away from the shortest path obtained by a suitable shortest path calculation algorithm to a less congested path so as to minimize the number of packet drops during data transmission and to avoid unnecessary delay. For this we have proposed a protocol named as Congestion Aware Selection Of Path With Efficient Routing (CASPER). Here, a router runs the shortest path algorithm after pruning those links that violate a given set of constraints. The proposed protocol has been compared with two link state protocols namely, OSPF [3, 4] and OLSR [5, 6, 7, 8].The results achieved show that our protocol performs better in terms of network throughput and transmission delay in case of bulky data transmission.

  • Under an open transmission access, the generation dispatch is determined by the bidding process of market participants. Congestion occurs when the dispatch would result in the violation of operational constraints. Congestion problem is formulated and solved by OPF(optimal power flow) calculation. The objective functions in OPF are given as quadratic cost functions or piecewise linear functions of bidding functions. In this study, the optimization technique of generation dispatch is presented for the combination of two types of quadratic and linear cost functions.

  • This paper analyzes the impact of DRA (Demand Response Aggregator) on market power when competing with power generation companies (Gencos) in the electricity market. If congestion occurs in the transmission line, the strategic choice of the power generation company increases exercise of market power. DRA's strategic reduction of power load impacts the strategy of Gencos, which in turn affects the outcome of the load reduction. As the strategy of Gencos changes according to the location of the congested transmission line, the impact on the market depends on the relative location of the congested line and the DRA.

Fuzzy PSO Congestion Management using Sensitivity-Based Optimal Active Power Rescheduling of Generators

  • This paper presents a new method of Fuzzy Particle Swarm Optimization (FPSO)-based Congestion Management (CM) by optimal rescheduling of active powers of generators. In the proposed method, generators are selected based on their sensitivity to the congested line for efficient utilization. The task of optimally rescheduling the active powers of the participating generators to reduce congestion in the transmission line is attempted by FPSO, Fitness Distance Ratio PSO (FDR-PSO), and conventional PSO. The FPSO and FDR-PSO algorithms are tested on the IEEE 30-bus and Practical Indian 75-bus systems, after which the results are compared with conventional PSO to determine the effectiveness of CM. Compared with FDR-PSO and PSO, FPSO can better perform the optimal rescheduling of generators to relieve congestion in the transmission line.

  • This paper discusses a scheme of the congestion management in the Korea electricity market under the deregulated environment. We investigated some cases of the congestion management in the world and the effects of the congestion management in a simple example. A basic idea of the congestion management in the Korea is presented based on the analysis of transmission congestion management in the competitive electricity market.

An Enhanced Transmission Mechanism for Supporting Quality of Service in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

  • Congestion occurring at wireless sensor networks(WSNs) causes packet delay and packet drop, which directly affects overall QoS(Quality of Service) parameters of network. Network congestion is critical when important data is to be transmitted through network. Thus, it is significantly important to effectively control the congestion. In this paper, new mechanism to guarantee reliable transmission for the important data is proposed by considering the importance of packet, configuring packet priority and utilizing the settings in routing process. Using this mechanism, network condition can be maintained without congestion in a way of making packet routed through various routes. Additionally, congestion control using packet service time, packet inter-arrival time and buffer utilization enables to reduce packet delay and prevent packet drop. Performance for the proposed mechanism was evaluated by simulation. The simulation results indicate that the proposed mechanism results to reduction of packet delay and produces positive influence in terms of packet loss rate and network lifetime. It implies that the proposed mechanism contributes to maintaining the network condition to be efficient.

  • 기존의 가장 널리 쓰이는 전송계층 프로토콜인 TCP는 패킷 손실의 원인이 망의 혼잡 때문이라는 가정 하에 설계된 프로토콜로서 유선망과 고정 호스트로 이루어진 전통적인 네트워크에는 적합하지만 페이딩, 잡음, 간섭 등의 전송 에러가 발생하는 무선 환경에서는 전송 프로토콜로서 적용하기에 비효율적이다. 이것은 무선망에서의 비트 에러에 의한 패킷손실 역시 혼잡으로 간주하여 불필요한 전송 제어가 발생하기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 무선 TCP 패킷의 전송성능을 향상시키기 위하여 연속적인 패킷 손실에 대한 제어와 TCP 윈도우 제어를 하여 불필요한 혼잡제어 알고리즘을 수행하지 않게 하는 개선된 SNOOP 프로토콜을 제안하였고 개선된 모듈의 성능을 모의실험을 통하여 확인하였다.

  • 광대역 무선 네트워크 환경에서 TCP의 혼잡 제어 알고리즘은 미디어 스트리밍 서비스가 요구하는 대역폭 및 지연 한계를 보장하기 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 효율적인 멀티미디어 전송을 위한 혼잡 제어 기법인 COLO TCP(Concave Increase Slow Start Logarithmic Increase Congestion Avoidance TCP)를 제안하였다. COLO TCP는 저속증가 (Slow Start) 구간에서 오목 증가 (Concave Increase) 알고리즘을 적용하여 다량의 패킷 손실을 방지한다. 혼잡회피 (Congestion Avoidance) 구간에서는 패킷 손실 이후 감소된 혼잡 윈도우를 빠르게 복구하는 로그 증가(Logarithmic Increase) 알고리즘을 사용한다. 또한 높은 네트워크 활용도와 패킷 손실률의 감소를 위해 가산 증가(Additive Increase) 알고리즘과 적응 감소 (Adaptive Decrease) 알고리즘을 적용하였다. 실험 결과를 통해 COLO TCP가 효율적인 멀티미디어 데이터 전송이 가능한 것을 확인하였다.

TCP-RLDM: Congestion losses과 Wireless losses 구별을 통한 수신측 기반 혼잡제어 방안 (TCP-RLDM : Receiver-oriented Congestion Control by Differentiation for Congestion and Wireless Losses)

  • 본 논문은 수신측이 네트워크 혼잡도를 측정 참여하여 송신측으로 하여금 네트워크 상태에 따른 윈도우 크기를 조절하는데 있다. TCP-RLDM은 기존 TCP 의 Additive Increase/Multiplicative Decrease 방법의 단점을 보완하는 데이터 수신율을 기초로 하는 측정기반 전송 전략을 채택하였다. 이는 유무선 망에서나 지연에 민감하거나 용인하는 응용들로 구성된 이질적 환경에서 동적으로 대응하기 위해 에러손상의 성질에 따른 즉, 혼잡에 의한 손실인지 전송상 일시적 손실인지에 따라서 적절히 대처함으로써 성능을 높일 수 있게 되었다. 수신측으로부터의 데이터 수신율과 에러발생 원인에 대한 정보를 이용, 송신측의 wave 전송방식과 가급적 혼잡이 발생하기 이전에 혼잡회피전략을 적용함으로써 가변적인 네트워크환경에 잘 대처하도록 하였다.
