  • A method to simulate the gas turbine transient behavior is developed. The basic principles of the method and main input data required are described. Calculation results are presented in terms of whole operating regime of the engine. The influence of initial parameters such as starting engine power, moment of inertia of the rotor, fuel schedule on performance characteristics of gas turbine during transient operation is shown. In addition, the effect of bleeding air on transient behavior is also considered. For validation of the developed computer code, a comparative analysis with experimental data obtained from a heavy duty gas turbine is made. Calculation results agree well with the experimental data for the range of operating regime studied and proved applicability of the developed technique to initial design stage of control system.

  • The current paper focuses the analysis of leakage detection in water pipeline systems by means of the transient method. In order to obtain essential data for evaluation the existing methodology, an extensive experimental process has been carried out in a single pipeline system, Several experimental tests were performed with and without a leakage in the system. Using the unsteady friction and improved unsteady friction factors gives reasonable match between the computed and measured results on the condition of the flow situations presented in the paper. The transient method attempts to estimate the leakage in water pipelines using observed pressure data collected during transient events on the system.

  • An analytical method is presented to solve the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere subjected to thermal shock and electric excitation. Exact expressions for the transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and electric potentials in the piezoelectric hollow sphere are obtained by means of Hankel transform, Laplace transform, and inverse transforms. Using Hermite non-linear interpolation method solves Volterra integral equation of the second kind involved in the exact expression, which is caused by interaction between thermo-elastic field and thermo-electric field. Thus, an analytical solution for the problem of transient wave propagation in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric hollow sphere is obtained. Finally, some numerical results are carried out, and may be used as a reference to solve other transient coupled problems of thermo-electro-elasticity.

  • An integrated adhesive wear model was proposed to determine the transient wear and steady-state wear of aluminium alloy matrix composites. The transient wear volume was described by an exponential equation, while the steady-state wear was governed by a revised Archard equation, in which both the transient wear volume and transient sliding distance were excluded. A mathematical method was developed to determine both the transient distance and the net steady-state wear coefficient. Experimental wear tests were carried out on three types of commercial A6061 aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with 10%, 15% and 20% alumina particles. More accurate wear coefficient values were obtained with the proposed model. The average standard wear coefficient, as determined by the original Archard equation, was found to be about 51% higher.

  • In this paper, a transient identification based on a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been suggested and evaluated experimentally for the classification of transients in the dynamic process. The transient can be identified by its unique time dependent patterns related to the principal variables. The HMM, a double stochastic process, can be applied to transient identification which is a spatial and temporal classification problem under a statistical pattern recognition framework. The HMM is created for each transient from a set of training data by the maximum-likelihood estimation method. The transient identification is determined by calculating which model has the highest probability for the given test data. Several experimental tests have been performed with normalization methods, clustering algorithms, and a number of states in HMM. Several experimental tests have been performed including superimposing random noise, adding systematic error, and untrained transients. The proposed real-time transient identification system has many advantages, however, there are still a lot of problems that should be solved to apply to a real dynamic process. Further efforts are being made to improve the system performance and robustness to demonstrate reliability and accuracy to the required level.

  • This paper discusses a method of measuring transient potential response of a corrosion interface to a small galvanostatic pulse perturbation for a rapid assessment of the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel in concrete structures. Measurements were taken on 100 mm sections of steel bars which were subjected to a wide range of corrosion conditions, from passive steel to actively corroding steel. The duration of the applied galvanostatic pulse was varied between 5s and 180s, and the lateral distance of the point of measurement on the steel bar varied from zero to 400 mm. The result of the electrochemical transient response was investigated using a typical sampling rate of 1 kHz. Analysis of the transient potential response to the applied galvanostatic pulse has enabled the separation of equivalent electronic components so that the components of a series of capacitances and resistances, whose values are dependent on the corrosion condition of the reinforcing steel, could be isolated. The corrosion rate was calculated from a summation of the separate resistive components, which were associated with the corrosion interface, and was compared with the corrosion rate obtained from linear polarization resistance (LPR) method. The results show that the galvanostatic pulse transient technique enables the components of the polarization resistance to be evaluated separately so as to give more reliable corrosion rate values than those obtained from the LPR method. Additionally, this paper shows how the galvanostatic pulse transient response technique can be implemented. An appropriate measurement time for passive and actively corroding reinforcing steel is suggested for the galvanostatic pulse transient response measurements in the field site.

  • A prediction method for determining the welding residual stress by artificial neural network is proposed. A three-dimensional transient thermomechanical analysis has been performed for the CO$_{2}$ arc welding using the finite element method. The first part of numerical analysis performs a three-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis, and the second part then uses the results of the first part and performs a three-dimensional transient thermo-elastic-plastic analysis to compute transient and residual stresses in the weld. Data from the finite element method are used to train a backpropagation neural network to predict the residual stress. Architecturally, the fully interconnected network consists of an input layer for the voltage and current, a hidden layer to accommodate the ailure mechanism mapping, and an output layer for the residual stress. The trained network is then applied to the prediction of residual stress in the four specimens. It is concluded that the accuracy of the neural network predicting method is fully comparable with the accuracy achieved by the traditional predicting method.

  • In this study, the state-space Newmark method based on average velocity is presented to analyse the transient dynamic response for general dynamic system. The conventional Newmark method based on average acceleration cannot he directly to the first-order state-space differential equations introducing the state-space vector. To overcome this problem, the time-step integration algorithm, based on average velocity concept, suitable for the first-order state-space differential equations is proposed In results, the proposed method has %he numerical stability and order of accuracy, which is proved analytically, equal to those of the conventional Newmark method based on average acceleration. Also, the formulation for numerical solution is very simple and the calculation time Is nearly equal to that of the conventional Newmark method based on average acceleration in spite of an increase of two times over matrix size. This method will be look forward to applying the general dynamic system to calculate the transient dynamic response.
