  • This paper presents a p-version finite element approach for modeling the stress distribution around a circular hole in a finite strip subjected to membrane and flexural behaviors. Also, same problem with a crack emanating from a perforated tension strip was solved by virtual crack extension method. The p-version of the finite element method based on integrals of Legendre polynomials is shown to perform very well for modeling geometries with very steep stress gradients in the vicinity of a circular cutout. Here, the transfinite mapping technique for circular boundaries was used to avoid the discretization errors. The numerical results from the proposed scheme have a good comparison with those by Nisida, Howland, Newman etc. and the conventional finite element approach.

  • This paper is for the first essential study on the development of unified finite element formulations for solving problems related to the dynamics/thermoelastics behavior of solids. In the first part of formulations, the finite element method is based on the introduction of a new quantity defined as heat displacement, which allows the heat conduction equations to be written in a form equivalent to the equation of motion, and the equations of coupled thermoelasticity to be written in a unified form. The equations obtained are used to express a variational formulation which, together with the concept of generalized coordinates, yields a set of differential equations with the time as an independent variable. Using the Laplace transform, the resulting finite element equations are described in the transform domain. In the second, the Laplace transform is applied to both the equation of heat conduction derived in the first part and the equations of motions and their corresponding boundary conditions, which is referred to the transformed equation. Selections of interpolation functions dependent on only the space variable and an application of the weighted residual method to the coupled equation result in the necessary finite element matrices in the transformed domain. Finally, to prove the validity of two approaches, a comparison with one finite element equation and the other is made term by term.

  • Modern multidisciplinary computational fluid dynamics often incorporates moving boundaries, as would be required in the applications such as design optimization, aeroelasticity, or forced boundary motion. It is challenging to develop robust, efficient grid deformation algorithms when large displacement of the moving boundaries is required. In this paper, a volume grid deformation code is developed based on the finite macro-element and the transfinite Interpolation, and then interfaces to a structured multi-block Navier-Stokes in-house code. As demonstrated by an airfoil with pitching motion, the hysteresis loops of lift, drag and moment coefficients of the developed method are shown to be in good agreement with those of experimental data.

  • Theoretical foundation and algorithms are presented of a new surface modeling and pre-processing system for the three-dimensional structures. The modeling method is based on the boundary representation scheme and composed of two hierarchical model structures: curve-network and surface models. The concept of modeling curve as a union of links is introduced to facilitate surface modeling via various transfinite mapping techniques or Coons Patches. Efficiency and novel aspects of the present method are discussed. Finite element mesh genceration and application procedures will be reported in a later paper.
