Sinusoidal wavy channel is one of the most commonly used devices in the industry for achieving mixing and heat transfer. Here we report on results obtained from the DNS of flow inside the wavy channel performed using the finite volume technique. As a primary stage to obtain the optimal design for heat transfer and mixing, this study observed the basic flow structures in a wavy channel. The mass flow rate is kept constant with friction Reynolds number of $Re_{\tau}$ = 140 . Time- and space-averaged and instantaneous flow fields are illustrated to observe the flow structures. Although the direct comparison of results between turbulent wavy and flat channel is somehow difficult due to the different flow phenomena derived from different configuration, here the mean streamwise velocity and RMS of velocities at same $Re_{\tau}$ of two different channels are compared. The basic difference between wavy and flat channel flow is the existence of small scale wall vortices along the walls in a wavy channel. These vortices make flow more complex, which will accompany the increase of heat transfer, pressure drop and drag.
To simplify the design and reduce the construction cost of traditional multi-girder structural systems, twin I-girder structures are widely used in many countries in recent years. Due to the concern on post-fracture redundancy, however, twin girder bridges are currently classified as fracture critical structures in AASHTO specifications for highway bridges. To investigate the after-fracture behavior of such structures, a composite steel and concrete twin girder specimen was built and an artificial fracture through the web and the bottom flange was created on one main girder. The static loading test was performed to investigate its mechanical performance after a severe fracture occurred on the main girder. Applied load and vertical displacement curves, and the applied load versus strain relationships at key sections were measured. To investigate the load distribution and transfer capacities between two steel girders, the normal strain development on crossbeams was also measured during the loading test. In addition, both shear and normal strains of studs were also measured in the loading test to explore the behavior of shear connectors in such bridges. The functions and structural performance of structural members and possible load transfer paths after main girder fractures in such bridges were also discussed. The test results indicate in this study that a typical twin I-girder can resist a general fracture on one of its two main girders. The presented results can provide references for post-fracture performance and optimization for the design of twin I-girder bridges and similar structures.
The present study investigates the effects of various rib arrangements and rotating on heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage of gas turbine blades. The cooling passage has very complex flow structure, because of the rib turbulator and rotating effect. Experiments and numerical calculation are conducted to investigate the complex flow structures and heat transfer characteristics; the numerical computation is performed using a commercial code, FLUENT ver.5, to calculate the flow structures and the experiments are conducted to measure heat/mass transfer coefficients using a naphthalene sublimation technique. For the rotating duct tests, the test duct, which is the cross section of is $20mm\times40mm$ (the hydraulic diameter, $D_h$, of 26.7 mm, has two-pass with $180^{\circ}$ turning and the rectangular ribs on the wall. The rib angle of attack is $70^{\circ}$ and the maximum radius of rotation is $21.63D_h$. The partition wall has 10 mm thickness, which is 0.5 times to the channel width, and the distance between the tip of the partition wall and the outer wall of the turning region is 26.7 mm $(1D_h)$. The turning effect of duct flow makes the very complex flow structure including Dean type vortex and high turbulence, so that the heat/mass transfer increases in the turning region and at the entrance of the second pass. The Coriolis effect deflects the flow to the trailing surface, resulting in enhancement of the heat/mass transfer on the trailing surface and reduction on the leading surface in the first pass. However, the opposite phenomena are observed in the second pass. The each rib arrangement makes different secondary flow patterns. The complex heat/mass transfer characteristics are observed by the combined effects of the rib arrangements, duct rotation and flow turning.
Metals have often played important roles to some enzymatic reactions that are essential to biological processes. Therefore many scientists have studied the reaction mechanisms of catalytic reactions in metaloenzymes for many years. Methane MonoOxygenase (MMO) is an enzyme that oxidize methane to methyl alcohol. Recently Tolman et al. studied a model reaction for MMO, which is a hydroxide transfer reaction in Bis-($\mu$-oxo)-dicopper complex, and suggested several possible mechanisms. Later a two-step mechanism, which is hydrogen transfer followed by hydroxide rebound, was proposed from theoretical studies. In this study we calculated the reactant, product, and the transition state structures, and energetics of the first hydrogen transfer reaction using various DFT methods including recently developed the MO6 family of DFT, namely, MO6, MO6L, and MO6-2X. We found that the M06/6-31G(d,p)/LANL2DZ method reproduce the experimental XRD structure of reactants very well. The TS structures, barrier heights, and reaction energies depend very much on the size of the basis sets.
This paper presents a comparison of results obtained by a newly developed numerical model for predicting the behaviour of structures under fire with experimental study carried out on heated and simply supported steel beam elements. A newly developed numerical model consists of three submodels: 3D beam model designed for calculating the inner forces in the structure, 2D model designed for calculation of stress and strain distribution over the cross section, including the section stiffness, and 3D transient nonlinear heat transfer model that is capable of calculating the temperature distribution along the structure, and the distribution over the cross section as well. Predictions of the calculated temperatures and vertical deflections obtained by the numerical model are compared with the results of the inhouse experiment in which steel beam element under load was heated for 90 minutes.
We present a formation technique of thin film heater for heat transfer components. Thin film structures of Cr-Si have been prepared on top of alumina substrates by magnetron sputtering. More samples of Mo thin films were prepared on silicon oxide and silicon nitride substrates by electron beam evaporation technology. The electrical properties of the thin film structures were measured up to the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The thickness of the thin films was ranged to about 1 um, and a post annealing up to $900^{\circ}C$ was carried out to achieve more reliable film structures. In measurements of temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), chrome-rich films show the metallic properties; whereas silicon-rich films do the semiconductor properties. Optimal composition between Cr and Si was obtained as 1 : 2, and there is 20% change or less of surface resistance from room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used for the material analysis of the thin films.
The calculation of the transmission loss of the silencers with complicated internal structures by the conventional BEM combined with the transfer matrix method is incorrect at best or impossible for 3-dimensional silencers due to its inherent plane wave assumption. On this consideration, we propose an efficient practical means to formulate algebraic overall condensed acoustic equations for the whole acoustic structure, where particle velocities on the domain interface boundaries are unknowns, and the solutions are used later to compute the overall transfer matrix elements, based on the multi-domain BEM data. The transmission loss estimation by the proposed method is tested by comparison with the experimental one on an air suction silencer with perforated internal structures installed in air compressors. The method shows its viability by presenting the reasonably consistent anticipation of the experimental result.

Recently it is increased by degrees to construct complex and large lattice structure such as bridge, tower and crane structures. It is very important problem to know dynamic properties of such structures. Authors presented new dynamic response analysis algorithm for rectilinear structure already. This analysis algorithm is combined transfer stiffness coefficient method with Newmark method. Presented method improves the computational accuracy remarkably owing to advantage of the transfer stiffness coefficient method. This paper formulates dynamic response analysis algorithm for plane lattice structure expanding rectilinear structures.
The paper deals with a model founded on the physical processes in concrete subject to high temperatures. The model is developed in the framework of continuum damage mechanics and the theory of porous media and is demonstrated on selected structures. The model comprises balance equations for heat transfer, mass transfer of water and vapour, for linear momentum and for reaction. The balance equations are completed by constitutive equations considering the special behaviour of concrete at high temperatures. Furthermore, the limitation and decline of admissible stresses is achieved by using a composed, temperature depending crack surface with a formulation for the damage evolution. Finally, the complete coupled model is applied to several structures and to different concrete in order to determine their influence on the high-temperature-behaviour.

In this paper, structural behavior under fire conditions is comprehensively examined, and a novel software interface for testing interfaces efficiently is developed and validated. In order to accurately assess the response of structures to fire scenarios, advanced simulation techniques and modeling approaches are incorporated into the study. This interface enables accurate heat transfer analysis and thermo-mechanical simulations by integrating software tools such as CSI ETABS, CSI SAP2000, and OpenSees. Heat transfer models can be automatically generated, simulation outputs processed, and structural responses interpreted under a variety of fire scenarios using the proposed technique. As a result of rigorous testing and validation against established methods, including Cardington tests on scales and hybrid simulation approaches, the software interface has been proven to be effective and accurate. The analysis process is streamlined by this interface, providing engineers and researchers with a robust tool for assessing structural performance under fire conditions.
