  • The steel-concrete composite column (i.e., the SC composite column) supports large-gravity loads and simplifies the installation and removal of the work in pouring the concrete. The column takes advantage of the in-plant prefabrication of steel, the speed of erection of a steel structure, and the fire resistance of steel. This paper presents the results of a parametric study using heat transfer analysis and a P-M interaction curve, and compares these results with the experimental results to check the accuracy of the proposed parametric studies. The parametric studies, such as the study of the concrete ratio of an area and the fire protection thickness, provide information on the fire resistance of SC composite columns.

  • Almost half of primeval galaxies show P-Cygni type profiles in the Ly$\alpha$ emission line. The main underlying mechanism for the profile formation in these systems is thought to be the frequency re-distribution of the line photons in expanding scattering media surrounding the emission source. A Monte Carlo code is developed to investigate the Ly$\alpha$ line transfer in an optically thick and moving medium with a careful consideration of the scattering in the damping wings. Typical column densities and expansion velocities of neutral hydrogen investigated in this study are $N_{H1}{\~}10^{17-20}\;cm^{-2}$ and ${\Delta}V{\~} 100 km\;s^{-1}$. We investigate the dependence of the emergent profiles on the kinematics and on the column density. Our numerical results are applied to show that the damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers may possess an expanding H I supershell with bulk flow of ${\~}200 km\;s^{-l}$ and H I column density $N_{H1}{\~}10^{19}\;cm^{-2}$. We briefly discuss the observational implications.

  • Treated sewage could enable growth by providing key nutrients or seeding the sediments with enterococci strains that can grow in the environment. This study is to test the hypothesis that the flux of bacteria into the water column is rate-limited by the transfer of bacteria across the sediment/water interface. Two conceptual models are derived for the transfer of bacteria to the water column from the sediment/water interface: convective diffusion of isolated bacteria and resuspension of particle-associated bacteria. The model predictions are directly tested together with field measurements of bacteria and sediment in an effluent-dominated stream where high concentrations of enterococci in this stream originate primarily from growth of the bacteria in stream sediments. The results reveal that high concentrations of enterococci in this stream are transported primarily by resuspension of particle-associated bacteria accumulated at the sediment/water interface, either in the form of bacterial aggregates or in the form of inorganic particles.

  • The pulse discharge anchor is a method to increase the capacity of anchors using electric discharge geotechnical technologies, which is also known as pulse discharge and electric-spark technologies. The pulse discharge anchor has bulbed bond length that is expanded by high voltage electrokinetic pulse energy. 24 anchors were installed in the weathered soil and sandy clay at the Geotechnical Experimentation Site at Sungkyunkwan University in Suwon, Korea and attached strain gauge at 10 anchors. The numerical predictions by Beam-Column analysis were compared with observed measurements in a field load test.

  • Recent building structures are superior in its ability but they are light and flexible, and so have problems of vibration. In general, the problem of vertical vibration is not considered in structural design. However, in terms of serviceability for inhabitants in buildings, the estimation of vibration in design stage is important. Characteristics of vertical vibration is changed by modeling method of beam-column joint. To check the characteristics of vertical vibration, many tests and analyses were conducted on constructing building in Seoul. Results of tests and analyses were compared using transfer function. As a results, to check the vertical vibration, the cramp ratio of beam-column joint must be considered and reduced in structural design.

  • This research has improved composite joint system of R/C column and steel beam developed at previous study. In this system, the shear force occurred at beam is transmitted by bearing resistance of stiffness and moment is resisted by tension capacity of coupling members. As the preliminary step of stress transfer tests of this system, welding performance test of coupling member such as round bar or square bar which has a role of moment transfer has been carried out. From the test, this element has a good welding performance and enough resistance capacity compared to design force.

  • Acquired adult flatfoot deformity is characterized by flattening of the medial longitudinal arch and dysfunction of the posteromedial soft tissues, including the posterior tibial tendon. When the non-operative treatment fails to result in improvement of symptoms, surgery should be considered. Operative techniques include flexor digitorum longus tendon transfer, calcaneal medial slide osteotomy, lateral column lengthening, and arthrodesis of the hindfoot. The principle of correcting the deformity while avoiding overcorrection and excessive stiffness is important in achievement of good outcomes in these patients.

  • For the design of a liquid direct contact cooling system, thermal and hydraulic analysis has been carried out. Well-known Zukauskas correlations are used to estimate the Nusselt number between the liquid refrigerant columns and the inlet airflow. The inlet air velocity is set at a typical value used in an actual showcase. For a constant column number, the best nozzle arrangement is determined for the maximum heat transfer. Heat transfer increases as the transverse pitch of the refrigerant column decreases. Among all the cases dealt with in the present study, the staggered arrangement with 140-columns of $14{\times}10$ shows the best thermal peformance and the expected temperature drop is $27.8^{\circ}C$. The effect of downstream refrigerant columns on the overall thermal performance is investigated as well.

  • The structural behavior of connections between concrete-filled rectangular tubular column (CFRT column) and steel beam has been studied in this paper through sub-assemblage loading tests. It is found that the sub-assemblages exhibit ductile restoring force characteristics under seismic loading. A formula for the prediction of the yield strength of each member in the connection is proposed by using the yield line theory under the assumption of a simple stress transfer mechanism. It is shown that the proposed formula can produce a reasonable prediction while providing a basis for further investigation.

  • In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and studied by the authors. This paper reports experimental results and observations on seismic behavior of steel beam bolted to reinforced concrete column connections (bolted RCS or BRCS). The proposed composite connection details involve post tensioning the end plates of the steel beams to the reinforced concrete or precast concrete columns using high-strength steel rods. A rational design procedure was proposed to assure a ductile behavior of the composite structure. Strut-and-tie model analysis indicates that a bolted composite connection has a favorable stress transfer mechanism. The excellent capacity and behavior were then validated through five full-scale beam to column connection model tests.
