Inhibitory Effects of Flavonoids Isolated from the Leaves of Stewartia koreana on Nitric-oxide Production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 Cells (노각나무 잎에서 분리된 플라보노이드에 의한 대식세포에서 산화질소 생성 억제효과)

  • Five phenolic compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of leaves from Stewartia koreana, and their nitric-oxide (NO) inhibitory activities were measured to identify the major active constituents responsible for the efficacy of the extract against inflammatory reactions. These five compounds were quercetin (1), quercitrin (2), hyperin (3), quercetin-3-O-(6"-O-galloyl)-${\beta}$-D-galactopyranoside (4), and kaempferol 3-O-[2",6"-di-O-(trans-p-coumaroyl)]-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (5). Among the separated compounds in the EtOAc fraction, compounds 4 and 5 were isolated for the first time, and no study has yet reported their anti-inflammatory effects. The compounds were identified by spectroscopic analysis, and the isolated compounds showed significant NO inhibitory effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Compound 5 showed the most potent inhibitory effect (63.35% inhibition) against LPS-induced NO production compared to that of compound 1 (17.17%), compound 2 (5.0%), compound 3 (3.92%), and compound 4 (6.32%) at $10{\mu}g/ml$ concentration. NO production was inhibited by suppressing the protein expression of inducible nitric-oxide synthase in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. These results indicate that kaempferol 3-O-[2",6"-di-O-(trans-p-coumaroyl)]-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside might be the major active compound responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects of S. koreana.

Modified Trans-Middle Temporal Gyrus Approach for Trigonal Tumor to Preserve Visual Field

  • Objective : We evaluated a modified trans-middle temporal gyrus (MTG) approach with good postoperative visual preservation for patients with trigonal tumors. Methods : Three patients with a trigonal tumor were treated via the modified trans-MTG approach guided by a neuro-navigator. Modified trans-MTG approach involve the incision at the MTG within 5 mm to the superior temporal sulcus. This approach makes a proper trajectory to the trigone but also reduces the retraction injury of MTG as little as possible to prevent postoperative visual field defect. Preoperative and postoperative visual field examination using perimetry was performed to evaluate the visual field. Results : Three patients underwent surgery for lymphoma in the right trigone, meningioma in the left trigone, and focal enhancing nodule in the right paratrigonal area, respectively. In case of lymphoma, preoperative examination showed a left homonymous hemianopsia : one week later after surgery, a visual field examination was performed and revealed improvement of the visual field defect. In case of the meningioma, the preoperative examination showed no visual field defect : one month later, the visual field had no defect. In case of the enhancing nodule, preoperative visual field testing revealed a partial left homonymous hemianopsia. Visual examination within one month after surgery showed no visual field defect. All three patients treated with the modified trans-MTG approach showed no visual deterioration after surgery. Conclusion : The modified trans-MTG approach provides a safe and useful technique for trigonal tumors without postoperative visual field deterioration and affords adequate exposure of the trigonal tumor with a short trajectory.

Trans-Korea Rail Logistics Strategy for the Normalization of South and North Korea Economic Cooperation (남북경제협력 정상화를 대비한 철도 물류망 구축 방안)

  • It is essential to connect the railroads between South and North Korea in order to the implementation of the Eurasia initiatives and prepare for the normalization of the economic cooperation between south and north Korea as well as the unification. This study provides the strategy to establish the rail logistics network for the normalized trades between south and north Korea, and the accommodation of the logistics demands to China and Russia. The alternative routes were designated and the costs for the rehabilitation were estimated, and suggested the priority for the investment. The Trans-China Rail is prior to the Trans-Siberia Rail in terms of the utility for the logistics and the political value. In connection to the TSR, it is desirable to pass the Seoul-Gyeonggi area where the demand is greater than the other area. This route is limited by the restriction in the capacity, then the Gyeonggi Ring Rail route may be necessary.

  • A family of Cr(III) complexes supported on tridentate dibenzimidazolyl ligands having a general formula: $[N(CH_3)(CH_2)_2(Bm-R)_2]CrCl_3$ [where Bm = benzimidazolyl, R = H (3a); -Me(3b); -Bn (3c)] have been synthesized and utilized them for the trans-1,4-specific polymerizations of 1,3-butadiene (BD), activated with methylalumoxane (MAO). The activity of BD polymerizations was sensitive to the type of ligand on the Cr metal, so that the activity decreases in the order of 3a > 3c > 3b. All the catalysts combined with MAO yielded polybutadienes with perfect trans-1,4 structure with moderate molecular weight.
