A Feedback Control Model for ABR Traffic with Long Delays (긴 지연시간을 갖는 ABR 트래픽에 대한 피드백제어 모델)

  • Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) can be efficiently used to transport packet data services. The switching system will support voice and packet data services simultaneously from end to end applications. To guarantee quality of service (QoS) of the offered services, source rateot send packet data is needed to control the network overload condition. Most existing control algorithms are shown to provide the threshold-based feedback control technique. However, real-time voice calls can be dynamically connected and released during data services in the network. If the feedback control information delays, quality of the serviced voice can be degraded due to a time delay between source and destination in the high speed link. An adaptive algorithm based on the optimal least mean square error technique is presented for the predictive feedback control technique. The algorithm attempts to predict a future buffer size from weight (slope) adaptation of unknown functions, which are used fro feedback control. Simulation results are presented, which show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • Smartphone applications like games, image processing, e-commerce and social networking are gaining exponential growth, with the ubiquity of cellular services. This demands increased computational power and storage from mobile devices with a sufficiently high bandwidth for mobile internet service. But mobile nodes are highly constrained in the processing and storage, along with the battery power, which further restrains their dependability. Adopting the unlimited storage and computing power offered by cloud servers, it is possible to overcome and turn these issues into a favorable opportunity for the growth of mobile cloud computing. As the mobile internet data traffic is predicted to grow at the rate of around 65 percent yearly, even advanced services like 3G and 4G for mobile communication will fail to accommodate such exponential growth of data. On the other hand, developers extend popular applications with high end graphics leading to smart phones, manufactured with multicore processors and graphics processing units making them unaffordable. Therefore, to address the need of resource constrained mobile nodes and bandwidth constrained cellular networks, the computations can be migrated to resourceful servers connected to cloud. The server now acts as a bridge that should enable the participating mobile nodes to offload their computations through Wi-Fi directly to the virtualized server. Our proposed model enables an on-demand service offloading with a decision support system that identifies the capabilities of the client's hardware and software resources in judging the requirements for offloading. Further, the node's location, context and security capabilities are estimated to facilitate adaptive migration.

Call Connection Control in CDMA-Based Mobile Network (CDMA 방식 이동통신망에서의 호 연결 제어)

  • The handoff is a distinctive characteristic of the mobile networks. In the CDMA systems, if base stations support multiple Frequency Assignment (FA), they provide both soft handoff and hard handoff. Under the CDMA environments, the soft handoff guarantees the favorable service quality and the continuity of call connection without interruption, and increases the service capacity of the base stations. This paper proposes call connection control schemes with handoff queue for supporting efficient handoff processing. The proposed schemes are divided into two categories: single handoff queue scheme and multiple handoff queue scheme. We analyze the performance of the proposed call connection control schemes using numerical analysis. From the analysis results, we can say that it is more desirable to avoid hard handoff as long as handoff queues are used. When a single handoff queue used, adaptive scheme that properly mixes avoidable and avoidable hard handoff method under the given traffic condition is more desirable. In case that multiple handoff queues are used, the suitable trade-off needs to be developed between handoff blocking probability and hard handoff probability to guarantee a given blocking probability threshold.

  • In recent, the demand of mobile communication system is increasing rapidly. However, since wireless resources is limitted, the protocol to utilize wireless resource efficiently is needed. Up to now, Slotted CDMA_ALOHA(S_CDMA_ALOHA) and Mini-Slotted CDMA_ALOHA(MS_CDMA_ALOHA) methods are proposed as a CDMA_ALOHA mechanism, and it is turned out that MS_CDMA_ALOHA offers betterperformance than S_CDMA_ALOHA mechanism. Also, IS-95 multiple access mechanism has been proposed as common air interface(CAI) protocol of CDMA digital cellular system. However, in former study, the performance evaluations were made without considertion of chnnel characteristics of wireless communication environment. In this paper, a new access mechanism for improring the performance in the DS/CDMA digital cellular environment is suggested. This mechanism is adaptive to the channel condition and based on the conventional MS_CDMA_ALOHA mechanism. Also, the performance of new access mechanism is compared with that of conventional mechanisms, through computer simulation. According tot h simulation results, it is shown that the proposed NA_CDMA_ALOHA(Noise-Adaptation CDMA_ALOHA) mechanism offers better performance than conventional three CDMA_ALOHA mechanisms in view of mean delay time and system throughput characteristics. This phenomenon is due to the fast that NA_CDMA_ALOHA mechanism controls the access attempts efficiently based on the channel condition in heavy traffic environments.

  • Because a wireless ad hoc network does not have fixed infrastructure, a call admission control approach researched in a wireless network is not feasible to this network. In this paper, we propose call admission control scheme to support this problem and the burst handoff traffic due to group mobility in a wireless ad hoc network. This scheme is an adaptive guard channel scheme which adapt the number of guard channels in each MBS(mobile base station) according to the current estimate of the potential handoff call rate derived from the number of ongoing calls within the coverage area of an MBS that initiate group handoff in a wireless ad hoc network. Our simulation studies are performed for comparisons of the proposed scheme with the other channel allocation schemes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme efficiently reduces handoff call blocking probability in wireless ad hoc networks.

  • In this paper, we propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation and call admission control for VBR video sources with QoS constraints to support an efficient resource management and at the same Lime to satisfy the user's quality or service requirements. For the dynamic bandwidth allocation, first the next amount of traffic is predicted using a modified adaptive linear prediction method that considers abrupt scene change effects. And then, we dynamically allocate the necessary bandwidth to each connection based on the currently provided quality degree by the network with respect to the user's QoS requirements in terms of average delay and loss ratio. For the admission control, we determine the acceptance or rejection or a new connection based on the quality satisfaction degrees of the existing connections. Simulation results show that our proposed dynamic schemes are able to provide a stable service, which well meets the user's quality requirements.

  • VBR compressed, pre-recorded video is known to exhibit significant, multiple time-scale bit rate variability. To reduce the variability and burstiness of the aggregated transmission rate as low as possible, in this paper, we present an adaptive bandwidth smoothing algorithm, that can be effectively applicalble for VoD services over a shared-medium channel. For these environments where many clients are connected to a single server, by introducing the conventional MVBA(minimum variability bandwidth allocation) algorithm and controlling adaptively the conventional MVBA(minimum variability bandwidth asllocation) algorithm and controlling adaptively the aggregated transmission rate whenever a new clients request is arrived at the server side, the proposed algorithm effectively reduces the burstiness and variability of the aggregated transmission rate. Through computer experiments, it is shown that the proposed method perporms better than the convertional non-aggregated bandwidth smoothing schemes in terms of the peak rate, standard deviation, number of rate changes for the aggregated traffic.

  • This paper proposes a traffic management policy for delay control in the wireless networks. The so-called EDD(Earliest Due Date) scheme is adopted as the packet scheduling policy, so that the service provision is performed in the order of the transmission urgency of the backlogged packets. In addition, we derive a formula to determine the contention window, one of the MAC parameters, with the goal of minimizing the non-work conserving characteristics of the traditional MAC scheme. This method eliminates the burden of the class-wise parameter settings which is typically required for the priority control. Simulations are performed to show the validity of the proposed scheme in comparison with the policy that adopts the class-level queue management such as the IEEE 802.11e standard. Smaller delays and higher rates of delay guarantees are observed throughout the experiments.

  • Greedy protocols show good performance in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) environment in general. But they make longer routes causing by surroundings or turn out routing failures in some cases when there are many traffic signals which generate empty streets temporary, or there is no merge roads after a road divide into two roads. When a node selects the next node simply using the distance to the destination node, the longer route is made by traditional greedy protocols in some cases and sometimes the route ends up routing failure. Most of traditional greedy protocols just take into account the distance to the destination to select a next node. Each node needs to consider not only the distance to the destination node but also the direction to the destination while routing a packet because of geographical environment. The proposed routing scheme considers both of the distance and the direction for forwarding packets to make a stable route. And the protocol can configure as the surrounding environment. We evaluate the performance of the protocol using two mobility models and network simulations. Most of network performances are improved rather than in compared with traditional greedy protocols.
