  • Objective: Various controlled vocabulary such as thesaurus and classification make us to reuse and share effectively by defining different concept and linking terms each other. The UMLS(Unified Medical Language System) is one of the most universal medical terminology systems. It is needed various methods to share and reuse information of traditional Korean medicine. We will research on method that adopt SUI of the UMLS(that is de facto standard in medical terminology system) in traditional Korean medical terminology. Method: We described major problems and applying process when we tried to add traditional Korean medicine in the part of meridian into the UMLS metathesaurus. Comparing western medical terms and traditional Korean medical terms for applying UMLS metathesaurus, there is not only many consistency, but also differences. Result: We confirmed what is the differences and consistency between western medical terms and traditional Korean medical terms. And then reviewed methods that apply the CUI, LUI, SUI in traditional Korean medical terms. Traditional Korean medical terms are not discriminated by singular or plural string. In addition, traditional Korean medical terms have vary string by initial law: the law of initial sound of a syllable. Character is described with Korean, traditional Chinese, modern Chinese, etc. According to meaning, language, initial law, SUI has a distinct value respectively. Conclusion: There are many differences to apply the UMLS between western medical terms and traditional Korean medical terms. For the better implementation to traditional Korean medicine into the UMLS, further research is needed in standardization and classification of traditional Korean medical terms, medical information system, etc. We hope this study helps the implementation UMLS, EHR, knowledge based system in Oriental medicine in the future.

  • Objective This is a previous study for including traditional Korean medical terms into the UMLS(The Unified Medical Language System) and achieving the interoperability between various medical systems. Method First, the traditional medical terms were divided into 4 categories : basic theory, acupuncture, herb and formulae. And then, searching these terms through metathesaurus in UMLSKS(UMLS Knowledge Source Server), terminology information was investigated and analyzed. Results In the case of TM title, traditional Korean medicine was categorized as different semantic type from Traditional medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine and Kampo medicine. Acupuncture points were described only as abbreviation and herbs were conceptualized inconsistently, as some belonged to scientific name and some belonged to Chinese pronunciation. Formulaes are described as Chinese, Japanese and Korean pronunciations. Conclusions More research is needed on diagnosis/disease terms and semantic types for the unique concepts in traditional Korean medicine in order to including the international standard.

  • The discipline of terminology is based on its own theoretical principles and consists primarily of the following aspects: analysing the concepts and concept structures used in a field or domain of activity, identifying the terms assigned to the concepts, in the case of bilingual or multilingual terminology, establishing correspondences between terms in the various languages, creating new terms, as required. The word properties has syntax, morphology and orthography. The syntax is that how words are put together. The morphology is consist of inflection, derivation, and compounding. The orthography is spelling. Otherwise, the terms of TKM(Traditional Korean Medicine) is two important element of visual character and phonetic notation. A visual character consist of spell, sort words, stop words, etc. For example, that is a case of sort words in which this '다한', '한다', '多汗', '汗多' as same. A phonetic notation consist of palatalization, initial law, etc. For example, that is a case of palatalization in which this '수족랭', '수족냉', '手足冷', '手足冷' as same. Therefore, to enlarged reference terminology is a method by term's normalization. For such a reason, TKM's terms of normalization is necessary.

  • Objectives : The terms, CAM and Integrative Medicine, have been often used to conceptualize relation between TKM and western medicine in Korea. But both terms often lead to confusion since the backgrounds of those were not being properly discussed. Methods : We researched the concepts of CAM and Integrative Medicine through the changes in definitions and research methods. Results : Although modern medical verification of CAM showed some results through scientific researches, there existed certain limitations. The term Integrative Medicine newly emerged for this reason. The rise of the new term came to criticize existing research methodologies such as RCTs or SRs. However in Korea, Integrative Medicine has often been misunderstood as a unification of two different medical systems. Conclusions : Thus, in future research of relationship between TKM and western medicine, debates on plausibility & philosophical background of TKM, and research methodology are indispensable.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to facilitate mutual comprehension between Western and Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) by analyzing recognition of medical school students on traditional medical prescription and treatment such as herbal medicines and acupuncture. Methods : We conducted a survey targeting medical school students of four medical schools from April through May 2009, and analyzed 208 cases responded. Results : Survey results revealed that medical school students took knowledge of traditional medicine from TV programs and on the Web in general. They thought they had considerable traditional medical knowledge but did not almost understand for professional contents. Regardless of some positive recognition for traditional herbal medicine, negative perspectives were more common and its safety and efficacy on the drug reference were considered as a major reason. On the other hand, recognition on acupuncture was comparatively positive. Scientific data for both herbal medicine and acupuncture are lacking in reality but the attitude only for acupuncture was different. Of the survey respondents, 57.8% had negative attitude against diagnostic methods of TKM and 59.1% opposed to the usage of modern medical equipments by TKM doctors. With regard to the future position of TKM, they tacitly approved that TKM would be absorbed into the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and importance of TKM objectification, followed by Government's support. Conclusions : Medical school students neither affirm nor deny TKM as a whole but the state of awareness for each item was similar to the physician. In terms of TKM its internal and external innovation would be required to continuously establish objectification of TKM prescription and scientific research on treatment technology.

  • Objectives : Traditional Korean Emergency Medicine (EM) has been developing for thousands of years, however its value was not properly considered after 19th century modernization. The purpose of this study was to review the current status of EM in Korean Medicine and suggest methods for improvement. Methods : We performed systematic reviews of the definition, current medical system, and educational curriculum of EM in Western Medicine, traditional Korean and Chinese Medicine, and integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine with the use of medical classics and text books. We also analyzed the trends in published research articles to discuss the current situation in the field of traditional Korean EM, and to provide methods for its establishment and development with traditional Korean medicine. Results : The definition of EM as a treatment of acute disease shares common understanding among traditional Korean, Chinese, and Western medicine. We presented descriptions of EM in many medical classics, however current law and EM service does not include these. As for the review of publications during the last 20 years, we found 21 articles in several fields that confirmed the need for more investigation. Conclusion : Traditional Korean EM has a long history and clinical experiences that can be found in medical classics, textbooks and research articles. There is an urgent need for more studies on traditional Korean EM as an emergency medical service system, and in terms of educational curriculum and related policies to improve Evidence-Based teaching.
