This paper is focused on development of models for measuring lateral and vertical track irregularities from corresponding accelerometers of an in-service high-speed train. Generally, the track irregularity was measured by a special railway inspection vehicle or system with contact or non-contact sensors. However, the sensors are very expensive and vulnerable to a harsh environment. Displacement estimation from an inertial measurement unit and its wave-band filtering was already developed in the previous study, and it was found that their results included not only the track irregularities but also other information such as phase delay of the applied filters, and suspension and conicity of the wheel. To identify the track irregularities from those results, a compensation filtering method was proposed. Each directional compensation filter was derived by using a system identification method with the estimated directional displacement as input and the corresponding track irregularities as output. In this paper, they are integrated into a model for each direction and applied to the measured lateral and vertical acceleration data from the axle-box and bogie of an in-service high-speed train. Their results are compared with the data from the track geometry measurement system. From the comparison, the proposed models are a useful tool for the measurement of the track irregularities using accelerometers of in-service high-speed trains.
The whole track system is designed and maintained to provide satisfactory geometry. Renewal and collection decisions are often governed by track irregularities. To provide cost-effective track to meet in the need in the future it is essential to be able to improve the methods by which the performance of the track is monitored and to have reliable methods for prediction and planning. This paper develops computer-aided system for analysis and management of track irregularities. The main objective is to collect and monitor track irregularities for each conventional line to be used as an aid in making decisions on track correction and renewal. The final decision especially on track renewal, however, always be a decision made by man and not by computer-aided system.
Power spectral density (PSD) model of irregularities for the maglev test track is presented. Track irregularities (gauge, cant, twist and vertical) were calculated from the survey data of sleepers on the test track. PSD model was constructed from the estimated PSDs of each track irregularities. Versine (gauge, cant, twist, vertical and lateral) of the track is obtained and their PSDs were estimated, too. Presented PSD model can be used for the analysis of levitation stability and ride quality of the maglev system.
Track irregularities of high-speed Maglev lines have significant influence on ride comfort. Their adjustment is of key importance in the daily maintenance of these lines. In this study, an adjustment method is proposed and track irregularities analysis is performed. This study considers two modules: an inspection module and a vehicle-guideway coupling vibration analysis module. In the inspection module, an inertial reference method is employed for field-measurements of the Shanghai high-speed Maglev demonstration line. Then, a partial filtering, integration method, resampling method, and designed elliptic filter are employed to analyze the detection data, which reveals the required track irregularities. In the analysis module, a vehicle-guideway interaction model and an electromagnetic interaction model were developed. The influence of the measured line irregularities is considered for the calculations of the electromagnetic force. Numerical integration method was employed for the calculations. Based on the actual field detection results and analysis using the numerical model, a threshold analysis method is developed. Several irregularities modalities with different girder end's deviations were considered in the simulations. The inspection results indicated that long-wavelength irregularities with larger girder end's deviations were the dominant irregularities. In addition, the threshold analysis of the girder end's deviation shows that irregularities that have a deviation amplitude larger than 6 mm and certain modalities (e.g., M- and N-shape) are unfavorable. These types of irregularities should be adjusted during the daily maintenance.
Rail support failure is inevitably subjected to track geometric deformations. Due to the randomness and evolvements of track irregularities, it is naturally a hard work to grasp the trajectories of dynamic responses of railway systems. This work studies the influence of rail fastener failure on dynamic behaviours of wheel/rail interactions and the railway tracks by jointly considering the effects of track random irregularities. The failure of rail fastener is simulated by setting the stiffness and damping of rail fasteners to be zeroes in the compiled vehicle-track coupled model. While track random irregularities will be transformed from the PSD functions using a developed probabilistic method. The novelty of this work lays on providing a method to completely reveal the possible responses of railway systems under jointly excitation of track random irregularities and rail support failure. The numerical results show that rail fastener failure has a great influence on both the wheel/rail interactions and the track vibrations if the number of rail fastener failure is over three. Besides, the full views of time-dependent amplitudes and probabilities of dynamic indices can be clearly presented against different failing status.
All work related to maintenance of track has been impletemented on the basis of the measured result from EM series cars in Korea. However, since these types of cars measure only versine value of the track irregularities instead of the real ones, this method will cause the confusion to maintenance operators if commercial speed should increase. This study was showing and explaining the program developed to get the real irregularities from the versine value. Finally, the reconstruction profiles completed by two different methods were compared with artificial track irregularities to confirm the their practicality.
Due to high-speed of trains, the track deformation increases rapidly and may lead to track irregularities causing the track stability problem. To secure the track stability, the continual inspection on track irregularities is required. The paper presents a methodology for identifying track irregularity using the NARX neural network considering non-linearity in the train structural system. A simulation study has been carried out to examine the proposed method. Acceleration time history data measured at a bogie were re-sampled to every 0.25m track irregularity. In the simulation study, two sets of measured data were simulated. The second data set was obtained by a train with 10% more mass than the one for the first data set. The first set of simulated data was used to train the series-parallel mode of NARX neural network. Then, the track irregularities at the second time period are identified by using the measured acceleration data. The closeness of the identified track irregularity to the actual one is evaluated by PSD and RMSE.
The paper focuses on dynamic analyses of a series of simply-supported symmetric composite steel-concrete bridges loaded by an ICE-3 train moving at high speeds up to 300 km/h. The series includes five bridges with span lengths ranging from 15 m to 27 m, with repeatable geometry of the superstructures. The objects, designed according to Polish standards valid from 1980s to 2010, are modelled on the bridges serviced on the Central Main Line in Poland since 1980s. The advanced, two-dimensional, physically nonlinear model of the bridge-track structure-high-speed train system takes into account unilateral nonlinear wheel-rail contact according to Hertz's theory and random vertical track irregularities equal for both rails. The analyses are focused on the influence of random track irregularities on dynamic response of composite steel-concrete bridges loaded by an ICE-3 train. It has been pointed out that certain restrictions on the train speed and on vertical track irregularities should be imposed.
In designing the high-speed railroad track, it is important to utilize appropriate track components to maintain uniform stiffness and ensure track alignment within the tolerance set for that system. In this regard, continuous welded rails (CWRs) were introduced to the Korean railways. Yet the installation of CWRs can result in an adverse impact due to the track/structure interaction on bridge sections yielding variations in the stiffness at the expansion joints. It may also impose additional axial force, generate excessive stress or deflection on track, and loosen the ballast at the ends as a bridge deck contracts or expands owing to a thermally-induced dynamic response. The risk is even greater in a long bridge deck, resulting in track longitudinal irregularities, deteriorating passenger's comfort, and increasing maintenance efforts. This study evaluates the performance of ZLR and their impact on track longitudinal irregularities through the track measuring results on a test section installed the ZLR in order to minimize the thermally-induced responses and the maintenance efforts for the high speed railway bridges.
