  • Innovative and nondestructive characterization techniques have been developed to locate and quantify nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in the vadose and saturated zones in the subsurface environment. One such technique is the partitioning interwell tracer test (PITT). The PITT is a simultaneous displacement of partitioning and non-partitioning tracers through a subsurface formation. Partitioning tracers will partition into the NAPL during their transport through NAPL-contaminated formations. Mean travel times of partitioning and non-partitioning tracers are used to estimate the quantity of NAPL encountered by the displaced tracer pulse. Travel times are directly proportional to the partitioning coefficient and the volume of NAPL contacted in the subsurface environment. This paper discusses the conceptual background, design and implementation of PITTs. • Sedimentation is one of the most common and important units in conventional water treatment plant. Structure such as various baffle walls and inclined plate settler may be obstacles to the horizontal flow when it is poorly designed. Therefore, the effects of these structures on characteristics of hydraulic flow must be evaluated to improve the settling efficiency of the floc. The hydraulic characteristic of the two sedimentations at Y water treatment plant (YWTP), which have different deflector baffles inside the settling basin, were investigated by tracer (fluoride) test. The inclined plate settler installed inside settling basin caused an undesirable impact on horizontal flow and produced dead zone. Solid baffle wall under the plate settler could help to minimize the formation of density currents and flow short circuiting. NaF used as a tracer was recovered more than 90% at investigated all basins. Morill index ($t_{90}/t_{10}$), Modal index ($t_p/T-HRT$) and short-circuiting index ($[M-HRT-t_p]/M-HRT$) were determined from tracer test results performed at YWTP. Those indices ranged 2.95~3.02, 0.40~0.53 and 0.32~0.46, respectively.

  • To demonstrate prevention of the leachate leakage out of the landfill with creating inward hydraulic gradient, a tracer test and continuous waterlevel monitoring at the Inside and outside of the barrier wall of a costal landfill were peformed. When the tracers were injected into the well outside of the vertical wall system with high water level, then they were detected at the well inside of the system with low water level. Furthermore the lowered water level at the inside of the landfill than that at the outside prevented leachate leakage out of the landfill. This study reports results of the tracer test and waterlevel monitoring.

  • Self diffusion coefficients of $^{67}$Co and impurity diffusion coefficients of $^{51}$Mn and $^{65}$Zn in single crystalline CoO have been measured by applying different radioactive isotopes simultaneously. To compare the residual activity method and the tracer sectioning method we analyzed our tracer diffusion experiments by using both methods simultaneously. According to our experimental results, the diffusion coefficients obtained from both methods are identical within experimental error, demonstrating the relibility of our experimental procedures. The diffusion coefficients of all the isotopes obtained during these test experiments for the methodology are similar in magnitude and show similar dependences on oxygen partial pressure. These first observations indicate that impurity diffusion of Mn and Zn occur via a vacancy mechanism as known for self diffusion of cobalt.

  • Estimations of porosity and bulk density, particle size analysis of soli samples, tracer test and slug test were performed in a petroleum contaminated area of Kangwon for understanding characteristics of the aquifer. Porosities of the samples were estimated 0.158~0.257, and bulk densities were estimated as $1.73\sim2.10\;g/cm^3$. Majority proportion of the soil samples was 0.5~1.0 mm size. In the soil texture triangle, all samples were distributed at sand area. Uniformity coefficients were estimated as 7.71~10.39, and thus all samples were poorly-sorted. In the tracer test, Darcy velocity was estimated to $4.8\times10^{-6}$ cm/day, effective porosity was 0.175, and longitudinal dispersivity was 0.1 m. According to the slug test, hydraulic conductivities of the test wells were estimated as $2.243\times10^{-2}\sim1.634\times10^{-2}$ cm/sec. These hydrogeologic parameters can be used for efficient remediation design of the petroleum contaminated area.

  • This paper aims for evaluating the wind-driven ventilation in basement parking lots of apartment. Wind tunnel tests coupled with tracer gas method were conducted, and classified by wind directions and opening types. The test results showed that, as for wind-driven ventilations, stack type openings were more successful than scuttle vent. Finally, according to Weibull distribution in Seoul, yearly averaged wind-driven ventilation rate was calculated.

  • The problem of the flocculation basin was induced by installing the pilot plant using tracer test at Yang-Duck water treatment plant in Pohang cite. The flocculation basin model downscaled as 1/20 was made of acryl and evaluated hydraulically by transforming the section of the effluent in the flocculation basin. The optimum section of the effluent was suggested and applied to the plant. The efficiency of the flocculation basin according to improvement was evaluated by the particle counter which can count the number of particles each size fraction. The results of this study are as follows : First, it was desirable to make the retention time as short as possible because the flow and the index value were similar regardless of the retention time. Second, after the modification in Yang-Duck water treatment plant, the problem of destruction of floe was improved and the plant was operated satisfactorily. The hydraulic experiment with tracer test can be applied to the performance evaluation as well as improvement of facility in unit process of existing water treatment plant. Additionally, it can be used to find a design factor in the new water treatment plant.

  • In the case of the remediation studies, push pull test is a more time and cost effective mettled than multi-well tracer test. It also gives Just as much or more information than the traditionally used methods. But the data analysis for the hydraulic parameters, there have been some defections such as underestimation of dispersivity, requirement for effective porosity, and calculation of recovery of center of mass to estimate linear velocity. In this research, Weibull distribution function is proposed to estimate the center of mass of breakthrough curve for Push pull test. The hydraulic parameter estimation using Weibull function showed more exact values of center of mass than those of exponential regression for field test data.

  • Partitioning tracer method is a useful tool to characterize large domains of the aquifers contaminated with light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs). Sorption of the partitioning tracers to the organic matter content of soil can potentially influence the efficacy of partitioning tracer method. LNAPL-water partitioning coefficients of tracers ($K_{nw}$), measured by static method, showed linear relationship. Sorption isotherm tests were conducted to evaluate the sorption capacity of the soils packed in the columns and the results were appropriately represented by Freundlich sorption isotherm. The sorption of tracers proportionally increased with the increase of the organic matter content of the soil. Laboratory experiments were conducted in four columns each packed with soils of different organic matter contents to determine the potential interference effects of sorption to soil organic matter content and correction factors for the errors in estimation of LNAPLs by partitioning tracer method. Though there were no contaminants added, breakthrough curves from columns packed with mixture of Jumunjin standard sand and organic matter showed separation of tracers. Columns were then contaminated to residual saturation with kerosene and breakthrough curves were obtained. The results show that sorption of tracers to soil organic matter leads to an increase in the retardation factor (R) and hence, to an overestimation of the saturation of LNAPLs. A relation between the percentage of organic matter content and the corresponding percentage error in the estimation of NAPLs has been developed.
