The samples for testing have been collected from Kangdong-myon, Nongso-myon, Beomseo-my on, and Cheongryang-myon in Ulju-Ku, Ulsan-city from July 1994 to March 1995 in order to grasp status of trace metals contained in some rice, soybean and soils, and to provide references in establishing their standard 96 collected samples(48 for cereals and 48 for soils) have been tested to measure levels of Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn through methods of trace metal containing analysis and heavy metal analysis. moisture content was also analyzed. And at the same time 0.1N-HCl soluble heavy metal content of soil was measured. The average Hg containing level of samples is 0.006 ppm for cereal and 0.062 ppm for soil, Pb is 0.302 ppm for cereal and 1.137 ppm for soil, Cd is 0.012 ppm for cereal and 0.027 ppm for soil, Cu is 2.01 ppm for cereal and 0.885 ppm for soil, and Zn is 7.853 ppm for cereal and 2.366 ppm for soil.
To know a degree of pollution in agricultural products cultivated around 4 unworked mines located in Chollanam-Do, we investigated a concentration of heavy metal and trace metal to provide the basic data for its residual limits. 28 samples of seven kinds of agricultural products(lettuce, onion, potato, radish, pepper, pumpkin, bean) collected from 4 unworked mines located in Chollanam-Do in 2001 were analyzed by Mercury Analyzer for mercury and Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer for Pb, As, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Zn. Hg contents were detected N.D. ∼trace level(0.01 ppm and less) and As content were detected N.D. ∼ 0.029 lpm but most of same)leE were not detected. Cd contents were detected N.D∼0.124 ppm. The results of Hg, As, Pb and Cd content showed that for all the 7 species of agricultural products studied, none have accumulated levels dangerous enough to Pose health problems. The average contents of Cu were 3.070 ∼ 7.825 ppm in bean, the Mn were 3.688 ∼23.935 ppm in lettuce ailed the Zn were 5.690 ∼21.171 ppm in bean, respectively.
In order to examine the contamination levels of trace elements in stream sediments in the Chungnam coal mine area, stream sediment and water samples were collected and analyzed for trace elements. The pH of stream water was neutral or weak-alkaline and the mobility of metal in stream sediments was supposed to be low. From the result of cluster analysis, non-polluted sampling stations can be distinguished from polluted sampling stations influenced by mining activities. The trace element concentrations in sediments from non-polluted zone were considered to be the natural backround concentrations of this area. The trace element concentrations in sediment samples from the mining area were higher than those from non-polluted area, and contaminated area of enriched trace element levels need to be properly managed. From the results of discriminant and regression analyses, concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb AND zN and predicted values of Be, Mo, and Ni in Chungnam coal mine area were found to be lower than those in metal mining areas in Korea.
Diesel particulate matter(DPM) often contains small amounts of metal as a minor component but this metal may contribute to adverse health effects. Knowledge of the mechanism for particle formation as well as the size preference of the trace metals is critical to understanding the potential for health concerns. To achieve this, the size and the composition of each particle should be optimally measured at the same time. Single particle mass spectrometer(SPMS) would be the best tool for this objective. In this paper, we therefore will introduce new findings about the mechanism and distribution of the trace metals in DPM, derived from a study where an SPMS was used to analyze freshly emitted DPM.

Trace metals were investigated for the surface seawaters and mussels collected in adjacent sea to the Dokdo during 1999-2000. This study reports the temporal and spatial distributions of trace metals in seawaters and mussels of the Dokdo coastal areas. Clean technique for trace metal analyses was employed in all manipulations including the sampling and pretreatment procedures. The concentrations of dissolved Cu, Cd and Pb in the surface seawaters were similar to those of the previous data in the East Sea. Contents of particulate Al, Fe, Mn and Co were influenced by input of detrital materials from the Dokdo. The average EFs of particulate metals were to the order of Cd > Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Mn > Co > Fe, and the high values in Cd and Zn may be closely related to the preferential uptake of biogenic particles. With the exception of Cd, all metal contents in the mussels were in the same ranges with those from other world coastal areas. The Cd accumulation factor of mussel/seawater in this study was abnormally much higher than previous data from the Korean coasts.
The characteristics of trace metals were investigated in the sediments of the Mokpo coastal area, southwestern coast of Korea. Surface sediments were collected in September 3, 2002 after a strong rain event. The sampling sites were categorized into the inner and outer harbour based on salinity distribution and difference of trace metal concentration was evidence between these two zones. The enrichment factor (E' F) of Zn and Cr were high at the mouth of Mokpo Harbour and $E \cdot F$ of Cu was high at the east-south of Dali Island. One hundred percent of Mn and Pb samples and $40\%$ of Zn samples had E' F higher than 1 suggesting that they are accumulated in the entire outer of Mokpo Harbour. Trace metals appeared to be accumulated in the inner harbour by input of sediments in the discharged freshwater from Young-San River during strong rainfall whereas they were influenced by natural sedimentation and human activities in part.

Trace metal ions such as $Cd^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ in a highly saline sample were subjected to on-line complexation with 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR) dissolved in a background electrolyte (BGE) under transient isotachophoresis (TITP) conditions. A long plug of the saline sample, containing the trace metal ions but devoid of TAR, was injected into a coated capillary filled with a BGE composed of 150 mM 2-(cyclohexylamino) ethanesulfonic acid (CHES) and 110 mM triethylamine (TEA) at pH 9.7. Since the electrophoretic mobility of TAR fell between the mobilities of the anionic leading electrolyte ($Cl^-$ in the sample) and the anionic terminating background electrolyte ($CHES^-$), a highly concentrated zone of TAR from the BGE was formed at the rear of the sample matrix and then the metal cations toward the cathode were swept by isotachophoretically assisted on-line complexation (IAOC) between the metal ions and the isotachophoretically stacked TAR. As a result, anionic metal-TAR complexes were formed efficiently, which satisfy the TITP conditions between $Cl^-$ and $CHES^-$. The enrichment factors of metal ions including $Cd^{2+}$ were up to 780-fold compared to a conventional CZE mode using absorbance detection. The detection limits were 17 nM, 15 nM, and 27 nM for $Ni^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ in a 250 mM NaCl matrix, respectively. Our method was successfully applied to the analysis of urine samples without desalting.
The exposure of human beings to toxic trace metals (Cu, Zn) continues to be an important public health issue and concern. This study was conducted to assess the exposure to trace metals (Cu, Zn) in the general Korean population by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Serum samples were obtained from 40 healthy volunteers. Specimens were collected in special container and we applied sample processing to minimize contamination. We used ICP-MS and AAS to analyze simultaneously the concentration of metals including copper, zinc. Distribution of trace metal levels in the general healthy population showed lower values. The results in this study can provide background data for clinical studies associated with trace metal exposure in the korean population.
To estimate the chemical mass balance of several kinds of trace metals in sea water, suspended matter and bottom sediments, sixty samples from the Kum and Mankyung estuaries were analyzed. In both estuaries, the distribution patterns of leachabl suspended trace metals and of bottom sediments were established to be similar. The relationship between the metal concentration and clay content of the sediments was found to be such that the metal concentration increases with an increase in clay content. A linear correlation ws determined between pairs of leachable metals (Fe-Zn, Fe-Mn and Zn-Mn) in the Kum estuary. However, in the Mankyung estuary linear relationship does not exist. Finally, it is suggested that the trace metals are reworking in the Kum estuary and those in the Mankyung estuary are sinking.
Rainwater runoff has been identified as a significant source of contaminants having tremendous impact on the receiving aquatic environment. In the present study, trace element transport by the surface runoff in the predominantly urban catchment of Guwahati city, India was monitored with a view to determine the chemical denudation rates of the land surface. A number of trace metals, namely Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in the runoff after 70 major rain events within the city. Cadmium was found to be the least abundant metal and Iron was the most abundant metal in the runoff. The results are interpreted on the basis of temporal and spatial variations in their concentrations. These variations are quite large in some of the events and reflect changes in the local environmental setting, differences in water utilization, variations in runoff volume, gradient and quality.
