  • The increase in the number of fatal electric accidents over the years has escalated the demand for specialized forensic engineers to determine their relevant technical causes. Likewise, the complexities associated with identifying the causes of electrocution accidents have prompted the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police to adopt a new methodology to diagnose electrocution accidents, consisting of an approach that involves medico-legal examination, electrical diagnosis of the evidence, and trace evidence analysis. This paper will discuss the application of the adopted method in further detail by unfolding two case reports. The first report outlines a case in which a worker got electrocuted at a construction site while attempting to turn on a lamp. The second case report involves the death of a technician in a workshop after trying to disconnect a washing machine from its plug. The methodology was utilized during the investigation of both cases, which were attended by the appointed forensic engineers and showed promising results.

  • The forms of current war are diversified over the pan-national industry. Among these, one kind of threats which has permeated the cyber space based on the advanced information technology causes a new type of war. C4ISR, the military IT revolution, as a integrated technology innovation of Command, Control, Communications, Computer, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance suggests that the aspect of the future war hereafter is changing much. In this paper, we design the virtual decoy system and intrusion trace marking mechanism which can capture various attempts and evidence of intrusion by hackers in cyber space, trace the penetration path and protect a system. By the suggested technique, we can identify and traceback the traces of intrusion in cyber space, or take a legal action with the seized evidence.

  • The characteristics of trace metals were investigated in the sediments of the Mokpo coastal area, southwestern coast of Korea. Surface sediments were collected in September 3, 2002 after a strong rain event. The sampling sites were categorized into the inner and outer harbour based on salinity distribution and difference of trace metal concentration was evidence between these two zones. The enrichment factor (E' F) of Zn and Cr were high at the mouth of Mokpo Harbour and $E \cdot F$ of Cu was high at the east-south of Dali Island. One hundred percent of Mn and Pb samples and $40\%$ of Zn samples had E' F higher than 1 suggesting that they are accumulated in the entire outer of Mokpo Harbour. Trace metals appeared to be accumulated in the inner harbour by input of sediments in the discharged freshwater from Young-San River during strong rainfall whereas they were influenced by natural sedimentation and human activities in part.

  • Saccharomyces cerevisiae J170, a mutant, was used for $DL-^{14}C-leucine$ uptake during the sporulation and vegetative stage. $^{14}C-Leucine$ uptake into yeast cells appeared the highest at pH 6.0, indicating the same result of glucose transport, $^{14}C-Leucine$ uptake in sporulation period was higher than in growth phase, showing the evidence that leucine is more required for protein synthesis. This tendency has the evidence tht leucine is more required for protein synthesis. This tendency has the evidence that leucine is more required for protein synthesis. This tendency has been also supported from the result of Km values of leucine uptake in two stages of yeast. Leucine uptake was inhibited by 2,4-dinitrophenol in two stages of yeast. This means that leucine transport system is associated with energy dependent in both stages. The contents of all amino acid in growth phase cells were higher than those of sporulation stge cells, and those of methionine and tyrosine were showed in trace during the sporulation stage. In contrast, the content of glutamic acid in sporulation stage was compared with those of other amino acids.

  • This research was carried out using Anderson air sampler which were set up on the roof of the Engineering College of Konkuk University at Hwayang-Dong, Kwangjin-Gu, Seoul from Aug. 1992 to foul. 1999. The results are as follows: The major component of yellow sand is soil particles based upon the observation that particles ranging from $3.3~7.0{\mu}m$ occupy 36~63%. It is certain that the increase of fine particles of respirable dust during yellow sand phenomenon in Seoul area affects the human body. The trace metals from natural sources like Al, Ca, Fe, K, Na, and Si show larger mass median diameter(MMD) values during yellow sand phenomenon than in normal situations while the values of MMD for Mn and Pb rarely changes. Noticeably, the changes in value of MMD of water soluble elements like ${NO_3}^{-}$ and ${SO_4}^{2}$ are 2.3 and 6.6 times higher during the yellow sand phenomenon compared to normal situations, respectively. This fact is regarded as decisive evidence showing that ${NO_3}^{-}$ and ${SO_4}^{2}$ in the air are attached to yellow sand and move together.

  • Main aims of this study are to clarify petrochemistry of the granitic gneiss in the Durye-Suncheon area. The origin of the metamorphic rock is evaluated from the abundance of $Na_2O$, the $TiO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ratios, the Harker variation diagram and $Al_2O_3$($Na_2O$ +$K_2O$ + CaO) ratios of the major elements. and the frequency distribution and average abundance of the trace elements . The trace elements of the granitic gneiss in the studied area are compared with those of the granitic rocks with shales in the other areas. The abundance of $Na_2O$ is lower than 3.27% and the $TiO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ ratio is 0.04. Also the Harker's variation diagram indicate this granitic gneiss correspond to sedimentary origin or S-type granite. The average abundance for trace elements of the granitic gneiss is similar to that of the shale, and the frequency distribution shows extensive distribution and irregularly . But xenolith are observed in the field survey, it is evidence of igneous origin , and then origin of the granitic gneiss in studied area is S-type granite.

  • We report our discovery of a significant population of CN-enhanced red clump stars in the classical bulge component of the Milky Way. Since CN-rich stars trace a population with enhanced Helium, Nitrogen, and Sodium originated in globular clusters (GCs), this is a direct evidence that proto-GCs were the major building blocks in the formation of the classical bulges and early-type galaxies in the hierarchical merging paradigm.

  • A new type of uranium occurrence in Korea was identified in pegmatitic and hydrothermally altered granite in the Daejeon area. The U-bearing parts typically include muscovite, pink-feldspar and sericite as alteration minerals. In this study, the geochemical characteristics and alteration age of the granitic rocks were examined to provide evidence for hydrothermally-enriched uranium. The K-Ar ages of muscovite coexisting with U-bearing minerals were determined as 123 and 128 Ma. The U-bearing rocks have relatively low ($CaO+Na_2O$), high $K_2O$ contents, and high alteration index values by major element geochemistry. The trace element geochemistry shows that the uraniferous rocks have significantly low Th/U ratios and strongly differentiated features. The rare earth element patterns indicate that the uraniferous rocks have a low total REE and LREE contents with depletion of Eu. Considering the geochemical variation of the granitic rock major, trace and rare earth elements, it can be concluded that uranium enrichment in pegmatites and altered granite should be genetically related to post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration of K-metasomatism after emplacement of the two-mica granite. This is the first report for geochemical characteristics of Mesozoic granite-related U-occurrences in South Korea. This study will help further research for uranium deposits with similarities in geological setting, mineralogy and age data between South China and Korea, and can also be expected to help solve the source problems related to high uranium concentrations in some groundwater occurring in the granitic terrane.
