  • A mobile tour-guide robot is a very attractive tour-guide in the exhibition hall of science museums and the necessity of tour-guide robots for museums is gradually increasing. Two kinds of robots have served as tour-guide robots in an exhibition hall of the Korea National Science Museum which is a very densely populated museum of many people and exhibits. The robots move around the large exhibition area and provide guide services to lots of visitors. A robot leads the way to the exhibit that a visitor wants to find and it takes the shortest route. Robots were operated for four months from January to April 2011, and we observed behavior of visitors and collected subjective evaluation of users. The result shows that there are four stages of using a mobile tour-guide robot and some differences of subjective evaluations depending on the gender and the age of the user and we suggest several improvements on the mobile tour-guide robot.

  • The localization system for tour guide robot was developed which is inevitable and important for the guide robot in order to guide the tourists and explain the history or contents of the site. The localization system is based on the non-inertial sensors such as a DGPS, Dead-Reckoning. The information of the DGPS is used to update the estimated positions from Dead Reckoning. The extended Kalman filter was used for the fusion of the measured information from the sensors and estimated positions by Dead Reckoning. The simulation results show that it is very reliable and the position error is bounded within a certain extend.

  • A campus guide robot was developed that can autonomously guide people through a university campus. The robot is able to evaluate its location using Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and Dead-Reckoning using the encoders mounted on its wheels. The robot can navigate autonomously along a guide route that is set in advance. A new position-based guidance approach was suggested. Unlike the conventional method of setting the guide sequence in advance, the robot acquires guidance by judging whether there is guide information corresponding to its current position. The robot searches guide information from the guide database while it moves along the guide path autonomously. If there is any guide information available around the location of the robot, then it performs guide functions. We also suggested an effective guide scenario that can maximize the interest of people. The performance of the robot was tested through sets of experiments in a true campus environment.

  • In recent years, keypoint recognition and tracking technologies are considered as crucial task in many practical systems for markerless augmented reality. The keypoint recognition and technologies are widely studied in many research areas, including computer vision, robot navigation, human computer interaction, and etc. Moreover, due to the rapid growth of mobile market related to augmented reality applications, several effective keypoint-based matching and tracking methods have been introduced by considering mobile embedded systems. Therefore, in this paper, we extensively analyze the recent research trends on keypoint-based recognition and tracking with several core components: keypoint detection, description, matching, and tracking. Then, we also present one of our research related to mobile augmented reality, named mobile tour guide system, by real-time recognition and tracking of tour maps on mobile devices.
