The use of steel fiber reinforced to improve the strength and flexural toughness of concrete is well known, but reinforcement of polymer concrete with steel fibers has been hardly reported till now. Polymer concrete has high strength, durability and freeze-thaw resistance than that of cement concrete, but it has disadvantage such as low flexural toughness. In this paper, the strength characteristics and flexural toughness of steel fiber reinforced polymer concrete are investigated experimentally with various steel fiber aspect ratios($\ell$/d), and contents(vol.%). As the result, the flexural and splitting tensile strengths and flexural toughness were increased aspect ratio, and reach the maximums at a aspect ratio of 50. The relationship between the compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strength were high. And the relationship between flexural strength and strain energy was approximately linear.

In the present work, the effect of plasma treatment of aluminum on the fracture toughness of CFRP/aluminum composites was investigated. The surface of the aluminum was treated by a DC plasma. The plasma treatment was carried out at volume ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas of 5:5 and the treatment time used was 30 sec. Cracked lap shear specimens of aluminum/CFRP composites were made using secondary bonding procedure. Fracture toughness of aluminum/CFRP composites was determined using the work factor approach. Then, the fracture toughness of plasma-treated aluminum/CFRP composites was compared with that of untreated aluminum/CFRP composites. The results showed that the fracture toughness of plasma-treated aluminum/CFRP composites was about 50 % higher than that of untreated aluminum/CFRP composites.

The primary role of fibers in High performance fiber reinforced cement composites(HPFRCCs) is to improve the toughness, or energy absorption capacity, of the composite material, However, there is still no general agreement as to how this toughness should be characterized, or how it might be used in the design of structures containing HPFRCCs. In this paper, therefore, we focus on test techniques for measuring flexural toughness. For mechanical properties, HPFRCCs can be tested in the same way as fiber reinforced concrete(FRC). Both the significance and the limitations of somewhat different national and industrial standards of FRC are discussed. For flexural toughness, with depend on the presence of fibers, new test methods was developed and verified. We also suggest evaluation method of tensile toughness indices using the moment curvature relationship in flexural tests.
Fracture toughness of alumina was determined by IF, IS, DT, SEPB methods, and the data were inter-compared. Round robin test on IF and IS methods was also conducted under the participitation of 4∼5 domestic institutes. Fracture toughness data determined by IF, IS, DT methods were similar, while those by SEPB method were smaller. Variation of toughness data determined by IS method using 98N of indentation load was significantly small compared to those determined by any other methods. Round robin test results showed that toughness data determined by IF method at various institutes do not coincide each other, while those by IS method do well coincide. Thus, it was concluded that inter-confidence on fracture toughness data, if determined by IS method at all institute, can be established between institutes.
In the case of a crack propagation a portion of the work of inelastic deformation near the crack tip is dissipated as heat. In order to understand the thermal effect on fracture toughness, tensile tests were carried out using thermocouples to monitor the variation of temperature. The experimental results show that the temperature of specimen was increased $5.4^{\circ}C$ at static load condition. And the thermal effect is investigated connected with the steady-state stress in the vicinity of a crack propagation in the elastic-plastic C-T specimen theoretically. And fracture toughness, the energy to make crack surfaces, presented correctively. The fracture toughness with considering heat at the blunting of the crack tip is lower about 16.9% than that of ignoring heat. So, it is resonable to apply the fracture toughness with considering thermal energy and it would be good explanation for constraint effect depending on the configuration in the presence of excessive plasticity.

In this paper, an evaluation method of fracture toughness on interface cracks has been investigated under various mixed-mode conditions of the bonded scarf joints. Two types of the bonded scarf joints with an interface crack were prepared to analyze the stress intensity factors using boundary element method(BEM) and to perform the fracture toughness test. From the results of fracture toughness experiments and BEM analysis, an evaluation method of fracture toughness on interface cracks in the bonded dissimilar materials has been proposed and discussed.

Mode II fracture toughness ($K_{IIc}$) of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) has been widely investigated under various patterns of test specimen geometries. Most of these studies were focused on single type fiber reinforced concrete. There is a lack in such studies for hybrid fiber reinforced concrete. In the current study, an experimental investigation of evaluating mode II fracture toughness ($K_{IIc}$) of hybrid fiber embedded in high strength concrete matrix has been reported. Three different types of fibers; namely steel (S), glass (G), and polypropylene (PP) fibers were mixed together in four hybridization patterns (S/G), (S/PP), (G/PP), (S/G/PP) with constant cumulative volume fraction ($V_f$) of 1.5 %. The concrete matrix properties were kept the same for all hybrid FRC patterns. In an attempt to estimate a fairly accepted value of fracture toughness $K_{IIc}$, four testing geometries and loading types are employed in this investigation. Three different ratios of notch depth to specimen width (a/w) 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 were implemented in this study. Mode II fracture toughness of concrete $K_{IIc}$ was found to decrease with the increment of a/w ratio for all concretes and test geometries. Mode II fracture toughness $K_{IIc}$ was sensitive to the hybridization patterns of fiber. The (S/PP) hybridization pattern showed higher values than all other patterns, while the (S/G/PP) showed insignificant enhancement on mode II fracture toughness ($K_{IIc}$). The four point shear test set up reflected the lowest values of mode II fracture toughness $K_{IIc}$ of concrete. The non damage defect concept proved that, double edge notch prism test setup is the most reliable test to measure pure mode II of concrete.

The standard master curve (MC) approach has the major limitation because it is only applicable to homogeneous datasets. In nature, materials are macroscopically inhomogeneous and involve scatter of fracture toughness data due to various deterministic material inhomogeneity and random inhomogeneity. RPV(reactor pressure vessel) steel has different fracture toughness with varying distance from the inner surface of the wall due to cooling rate in manufacturing process; deterministic inhomogeneity. On the other hand, reference temperature, $T_0$, used in the evaluation of fracture toughness is acting as a random parameter in the evaluation of welding region; random inhomogeneity. In the present paper, four regions, the surface, 1/8T, 1/4T and 1/2T, were considered for fracture toughness specimens of KSNP (Korean Standard Nuclear Plant) SA508 Gr. 3 steel to investigate deterministic material inhomogeneity and random inhomogeneity. Fracture toughness tests were carried out for four regions and three test temperatures in the transition region. Fracture toughness evaluation was performed using the bimodal master curve (BMC) approach which is applicable to the inhomogeneous material. The results of the bimodal master curve analyses were compared with that of conventional master curve analyses. As a result, the bimodal master approach considering inhomogeneous materials provides better description of scatter in fracture toughness data than conventional master curve analysis. However, the difference in the $T_0$ determined by two master curve approaches was insignificant.

Reduced activation ferritic (JLF-1) steel is leading candidates for blanket/first-wall structures of the D-T fusion reactor. In fusion application, structural materials will suffer effects of repeated changes of temperature. Therefore, the data base of tensile strength and fracture toughness at operated temperature $400^{\circ}C$ are very important. Fracture toughness ($J_{IC}$) and tensile tests were carried out at room temperature and elevated temperature ($400^{\circ}C$). Fracture toughness tests were performed with two type size to investigate the relationship between the constraint effect of a size and the fracture toughness resistance curve. As the results, the tensile strength and the fracture toughness values of the JLF-1 steel are slightly decreased with increasing temperature. The fracture resistance curve increased with increasing plane size and decreased with increasing thickness. The fracture toughness values of JLF-1 steel at room temperature and at $400^{\circ}C$ shows an excellent fracture toughness ($J_{IC}$) of about $530kJ/m^2\;and\;340kJ/m^2$, respectively.

Actual stress distributions in the nozzle of a pressure vessel may not be in plane strain condition, implying that the crack-tip constraint condition may be relaxed in the nozzle. In this paper, a methodology for evaluating the fracture toughness of the ASME Code is presented considering the relaxation of the constraint effect in the nozzle of the reactor pressure vessel. The crack-tip constraint effect is quantified by the T-stress. The equation, which represent the relation between the fracture toughness in the lower constraint condition and the plane strain fracture toughness, is derived using the T-stress. This equation is similar to the method for evaluating the fracture toughness of the Master Curve for low constraint conditions. As a result of evaluating the fracture toughness considering the constraint effect in the reactor inlet, outlet and direct injection nozzles using the proposed equation, it was confirmed that the fracture toughness in the nozzles is higher than the plane strain fracture toughness. Applying the proposed evaluation methodology, it is possible to reflect the relaxation of the constraint effect in the nozzles of the reactor pressure vessel, therefore, the safe operation area on the pressure-temperature limit curve can be prevented from being excessively limited.
