  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find the effects of an exercise program on body composition, serum lipids, and menopausal symptoms in Korean menopausal women. Methods: This research used none qui valent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 30 middle-aged women who were divided into two groups, an experimental group (n = 16) who participated in the exercise program and a control group (n = 14). The exercise program was composed of gymnastic-ball exercises with RPE $12{\sim}13$ intensity, 50 minutes' duration and three times a week for 12 weeks from April 1 to June 30, 2008. The dependent variables (body composition, serum lipids, menopause symptoms, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction) were measured before and after exercise program. Results: There were statistically significant difference in weight (F=2.92, p=.049), percent body fat (F=4.22, p=.040), total cholesterol (F=2.63, p= .017) and high density lipoprotein (F=6.74, p= .015) between the two groups. Psychological menopausal symptoms also decreased significantly (F=7.01. p=.014) after the exercise in the experimental group. Conclusions: Regular gymnastic-ball exercises are helpful for menopausal women. They have positive effects not only on body composition and serum lipids but also on the decrease of menopausal symptoms. The results of this study suggest that gymnastic-ball exercise programs are effective in health promotion of Korean middle-aged women, and thus it is necessary to develop exercise programs for women.

  • This study an analyzes the effects of the P/S ratio of dietary lipids and antioxidant vitamin supplements on serum lipids level and fatty acid profile, the degree of lipid peroxidation, and the antioxidant enzyme activities in the liver of rats treated with 7,12-dimethylbenz($\alpha$) anthracene(DMBA). P/S ratio of dietary lipids was made into 0.5, 1 and 2 by mixing palm oil, soybean oil, sesame oil and perilla oil at 10%(w/w) fat level and n-6/n-3 ratio was fixed to 4. Antioxidant vitamin of $\alpha$-tocopherol or $\beta$-carotene was supplemented in addition to vitamin mixture which was given at 1 % of the standard diet. female Sprague-Dawley strain rats, about 60 days old, were divided into three groups(LP : low P/S ratio(0.5), MP : medium P/S ratio (1.0), HP , high P/S ratio(2.0)) and each group was sub-divided into three groups(S ; standard, T ; tocopherol supplemented, C : carotene supplemented): Two weeks after feeding experimental diets, all groups were treated with a single dose of DMBA(2mg/100g BW) by gastric intubation and fed experimental diet for 9 week. The results were as follows ; 1) Serum total cholesterol(TC) level was not significantly influenced by diet but tended to be lower in HP groups compared to LP and MP groups. Triglyceride level was the highest in LP groups and the lowest in $\alpha$-tocopherol supplemented groups. 2) Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) level, representing lipid peroxidation in hepatic microsome, tended to be increased as the unsaturation of dietary lipids increases. $\alpha$-Tocopherol supplement significantly decreased TBARS level. 3) The activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GSHPx) in hepatic cytosol showed the tendency to be high with increasing P/S ratio of dietary lipids. SOD activity was not significantly influenced by antioxidant vitamin, but GSHPx activity was significantly increased in $\alpha$-tocopherol supplemented groups. In summary, high polyunsaturated fat diet was effective on reducing the serum level of total cholesterol and triglyceride, while it increased unsaturation and peroxidizability of serum fatty acid. With increasing P/S ratio of dietary lipids, lipid peroxidation was increased in the liver and antioxidant enzyme system was induced to inhibit lipid peroxidation against oxidative damage. $\alpha$-Tocopherol supplement was effective in lowering lipid peoxidation, but $\beta$-carotene supplement did not exhibit antioxidant effect. • This study was performed to investigate effect of dried powders and ethanol extracts of garlic flesh and peel on lipid metabolism and antithrombogenic capacity in 16-month-old rats. Forty Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 618.1$\pm$6.5 g were blocked into five groups according to body weight and raised for 3 months with control and experimental diets containing 5% (w/w) of dried powders of garlic flesh or peel, or ethanol extracts from equal amount of each dried powder and control diet. Plasma and liver total lipids, triglyceride and total cholesterol, and plasma HDL-cholesterol, throm-boxane $B_2$ (TX $B_2$), 6-keto-prostaglandin $F_{1a}$ (6-keto-PG $F_{1a}$) concentrations were measured. Total, insoluble and soluble dietary fibers contents were highest in peel powder followed by fresh powder, and those in ethanol extracts of flesh and peel, especially soluble, very low. Plasma and liver total lipids, triglyceride, and total cholesterol concentrations were lower in all the garlic experimental groups compared to Especially, flesh and peel powder lowered plasma total lipids, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations markedly, and flesh powder and flesh ethanol extract lowered liver total lipids, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentration remarkably. Plasma TX $B_2$ concentrations in garlic experimental groups were lower than that of control group, and 6-keto-PG $F_{1a}$ concentrations. In garlic experimental groups were higher than that of control group. Flesh ethanol extract group showed the lowest TX $B_2$ and the highest 6-keto-PG $F_{1a}$ concentrations among experimental groups, so TX $B_2$/6-keto-PG $F_{1a}$ ratio in flesh ethanol extract group was significantly lower than that of control group. Moreover, clotting time was significantly increased in flesh ethanol extract group as compared to control group. In conclusion, intakes of dried powders and ethanol extracts of garlic flesh and peel were effective in lowering lipid levels of liver and plasma. And also flesh ethanol extract diet was most effective in antithrombogenic activity among garlic experimental groups as TX $B_2$/6-keto-PG $F_{1a}$ ratio in flesh ethanol extract group was significantly lower and clotting time was significantly increased in this group as compared to control group.ntrol group.

  • The lipid compositions including fatty acid sterol lipid class and the lipid component of the total lipid extracted from the flesh of some fresh water fishes I. e. mandarin cornet cat fish and Korean perch were compared. The levels of total lipid of flesh tissues from the fresh water fishes were high(7.4%) in cat fish but low(1.4-2.2%) in mandarin fish Korean perch and cornet fish. On the contrary the content of unsaponifiable matters found in total lipid was low(2.6%) in cat fish but high(6.0%-6.5%) in mandarin fish Korean perch and cornet fish. Total lipids were mainly composed of triglyceride(74.6-86.5%) as major component in each sample and the other lipid components of total lipid e. g. polar lipid free fatty acids and free sterol were the minor components, The major fatty acids in total lipid of each sample were{{{{ {C }_{16 { }:_{ }0 } }}}}(19.6-29.2%) {{{{ {C }_{16 { }:_{ }1 } }}}}(17.3-30.7%) and {{{{ {C }_{18 { }:_{ }1 } }}}}(16.8-29.2%) and additionally it chiefly consisted of {{{{ {C }_{14 { }:_{ }0 } }}}} and {{{{ {C }_{18 { }:_{ }2 } }}}} Particularly the contents of polyenoic acids in total lipid of cat fish were higher than those of the other fish samples. The level of cholesterol in total lipid was low (8.3mg/g) in cat fish but were high(36.9-59.9mg/g) in mandarin fish Korean perch and cornet fish. The contents of fractionated neutral lipid(NL) were higher than those of polar lipid(PL) in each sample. Particularly phospholipid content in PL was low(6.0%) in cat fish but were high(23.1-36.3%) in mandarin fish Korean perch and cornet fish. Neutral lipids were mainly consisted of triglyceride(84.5-93.4%) as amjor component in each sample and the other lipid components of neutral lipid e, g, free fatty acids and free wterol were exhibited as a minor components, The fatty acid compositon of neutral lipids was very resembled to total lipids. The phospholipid in mandarin cornet and cat-fish were mainly composed of phosphatidyl serine(23.1-49.8%) and phosphatidyl choline(20.8-45.3%) The relatively higher amounts of phosphatidyl serine were observed in mandarine cornet and cat-fist than in Korean perch, But phosphatidyl ethanolamine(42.3%) and phosphatidyl choline (49.9%) were the main phospholipid in Korean perch. The extraordinary high content of phos-phatidyl ethanolamine compared to other fishes was characteristics in phospholipid composition of Korean perch. The major fatty acids in phospholipid of each sample were {{{{ {C }_{16 { }:_{ }0 } }}}} (38.3-46.5%) {{{{ {C}_{18 { }:_{ }0 } }}}}(14.2-21.7) and C16:1(11.6-13.8%) and additionally it chiefly consisted of C18:2, C18:0 and C17:0 The major fatty acids in glycolipid of each sample were C16:0(28.8-40.1%) C18:1(5.4-29.9%) C18:0(5.1-28.9%) and C16:1(8.2-20.1%) and additio-nally it chiefly consisted of C14:0 and C20:1.

  • In order to investigate the effect of dietary fatty acids on lipids metabolism in adipose pads and superficial pectoral muscle of chicks, the present, experiment was carried out using signle comb White Leghorn male chicks fed a fat-free diet and diets containing margaric, stearic or linoleic acids. Total lipids of tissues were extracted with a chlorofrom-methanol solution. The lipid components were fractionated by thin layer chromatography and the fatty acid distribution of lipid fractions was determined by gas liquid chromatography. The neck adipose pads contained 34-62% total lipids, in which triglycerides, were dominant, being 97-98%. Margaric, stearic and linoleic acids were distributed at a relatively high rate in the adipose tissue when the corresponding acids were fed, and margaric acid feeding lowered palmitoleic acid distribution and linoleic acid feeding elevated stearic acid distribution. The wet superficial pectoral muscle contained 1.3-1.7% total lipids, of which 77-79% was phospholipids and 11-13% was free cholesterol. When margaric acid was fed, margaric and heptadecenoic acids appeared in the muscle lipids. When linoleic acid was fed, this acid was significantly highly distributed in every muscle lipid fractions, whereas, when stearic acid fed no elevation of stearic acid distribution was observed. In the muscle phospholipids, oleic acid was significantly highly distributed in the stearic acid fed chicks, and the linoleic acid feeding signigicantly lowered the distribution value of palmitic and oleic acids, but elevated the distribution value of stearic acid. And the linoleic acid feeding lowered the distribution value of eicosatrienoic acid and elevated the distribution value of arachidonic acid.

  • Lipid consumption in early life has been implicated with arteriosclerosis in later life. It has been also claimed that lipid contents of serum in early life would reflect coronary atherosclerosis in later life. Present study has been undertaken to look for serum lipid contents of mother and newborn simultaneously to determine the difference of various lipid classes. Lipids were extracted by Folch method. Total lipid was determined gravimetrically; cholesterol by Zak's method, phospholipids by Fiske-Subba-Row's method, and triglycerides by Sugiura's method. Fatty acids were analysed by gas liguid chromatography. Values of the total lipids of mother was significantly higher than those of newborn. HDI-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio of newborn's was higher than mother's. The amount of saturated fatty acids in the serum cholesteryl ester of newborn was significantly higher than mother's.

  • This study was conducted longitudinally following the total lipid and cholesterol content, fatty acids composition and Vitamin E content in human milk from 2-5 days to 12 weeks postpartum of 45 lactating Korean mothers. All samples were from well-defined subjects and uniform collection procedures were used. Total lipid concentration increased from 1.98g/dl at 2-5 days to 3.09g/dl at 12 weeks postpartum. However, there was a large variation in the concentration of total lipids. Total cholesterol concentration tended to decrease from 20.68mg/dl at 2-5days to 17.19mg/dl at 12 weeks. In comparison with transitional and mature milk, human colostrum was characterized by a lower percentage of saturated fatty acids including medium chain length fatty acids and a higher percentage of monounsatureated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Therefore, the P/S and M/S ratios of human milk lipids decreased significanlty during lactation. P/M/S ratio of colostrum changed from 0.38 : 0.84 : 1.00 at 2-5 days to 0.29 : 0.61 : 1.00 at 12 weeks of mature milk. Total tocopherol concentration decreased significantly from 833 ug/dl at 2-5 days to 300 ug/dl at 12 weeks.
