The first drainage time in a day was controlled for precise irrigation management with low consumption of nutrient solution in tomato perlite bag culture system by measuring water level of drained water in drainage catchment part. This method automatically adjusted the irrigation time under any condition of light, temperature and humidity, resulting in stable water content in substrates. However, it was difficult to keep the time consistent as they were set. It drained with the deviation of 20 min in the treatment in which the first drainage time was set at 10:00 and 50 min in the treatment set at 10:30. The first drainage time was not constant, but the drain occurred stably before noon in the treatment of which irrigation frequency was longer than 30 min. The drainage ratio was better balanced in all the treatments using drainage level sensors than the treatment using time clock for irrigation control. High water and fertilizer efficiencies were obtained. Although the growth, total yield and sugar content were not significantly different between the treatments, fruit weight was higher in the treatments using drainage level sensors than that using timer.
This study was conducted to analyze the antioxidant activities of fermented black jujube and to compare these with those of dried jujube, for the development of functional materials. The antioxidative activities of dried jujube and fermented black jujube extracts were analyzed by electron-donating ability (EDA) using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide-dismutase-(SOD)-like activity by pyrogallol, nitrite-scavenging ability, and xanthin oxidase. The yield of the fermented black jujube extracts was higher than that of the dried jujube extracts, and that of the ethanol extracts was higher than that of the hot-water extracts. The total phenol contents of the hot-water extracts from fermented black jujube were higher. The EDA values of the hot-water and ethanol extracts from fermented black jujube and dried jujube increased with an increase in extract concentration, and were about 85% in a $1000{\mu}g/mL$ extract concentration. The SOD-like activity increased with an increase in extract concentration. The SOD-like activity of the hot-water extract from fermented black jujube was higher than that of the other extracts. The nitrite-scavenging ability at pH 1.2 of the hot-water extracts from dried jujube was higher than that of the other extracts. The xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities of the hot-water and ethanol extracts from fermented black jujube were higher than those of the other extracts, and increased along with the concentrations of the extracts.

'Geumhyang2ho', a new brown and labor-saving variety of Flammulina velutipes, was bred by spontaneous crossing between 'Geumhyang' and 'Garlmoe' during demonstration cultivation in bag culture farm of oyster mushroom in 2013. During bottle cultivation, the temperature was maintained at $16^{\circ}C$; the variety displayed good quality compared to the control ('Geumhyang'), without necessitating vinyl cone treatment. The time periods necessary for mycelial growth, fruit body growth, and primordia formation were 24 days, 11 days, and 8 days, respectively. The total cultivation period was 43 days, which was 2 days longer than that of the control. The pileus diameter was smaller, but the pileus thickness and stipe diameter were greater than those of the control. The pileus color was yellowish ivory, which was very similar to that of the control. The yield of 'Geumhyang2ho' was 118 g per 850 ml bottle, which was markedly lower than that for bottle cultivation with vinyl cone treatment. However, its good quality suggests the potential of the labor-saving bottle-based cultivation of 'Geumhyang2ho' without vinyl cone treatment in oyster mushroom farms.

The study was conducted to compare the chemical properties and microbial activity of soil and the crop productivity by applying homemade liquid fertilizers (LF) used in leading cucumber farms as well as to evaluate the eco-friendly LFs to substitute for a chemical fertilizer. Three homemade LFs, EM, starfish, and native microbes, and a chemical LF were regularly fertigated per three days during the growing season. Chemical LF contained the highest pH, EC (electrical conductivity), and concentrations of T-N, $P_2O_5$, K, Ca, and Mg, while the lowest EC level was observed for EM LF. Soil EC was the highest to the 3.0 dS/m for chemical LF-plots, with lowering soil pH, OM (organic matter), and Mg concentration. Soil chemical properties mostly increased in native microbes LF-plots. However, soil microbial properties were not significantly different among the LF treatment plots. OTU (operational taxonomic units), richness estimator, and diversity index of bacteria and fungi increased in the chemical LF and EM LF based on the pyrosequencing analysis. SPAD and PS II values on the treated-cucumber leaves were seasonally decreased from 32 to 60 days after transplanting, with the rapid decline observed at 45 days after transplanting. Number of leaves and crop height increased in the treatments with EM and native microbes LF. LF treated-cucumber crops were not significantly different for total fresh weight and fruit yield.
The study was conducted to investigate the infestation and distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes on kiwi orchards in Korea. Plant parasitic nematodes genus and densities were investigated at a total of 102 sites in Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do, which are the main production areas of domestic kiwi orchards. Plant parasitic nematodes detected were of 9 genera, including root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus spp.), and needle nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.), and 56% of the 102 plantations were infected with root-knot nematodes. Root-knot nematodes were found to be the most important plant parasitic nematode in domestic kiwi orchards. The average density of root-knot nematodes is 97 per 300 cm3 soil, and there is concern about the kiwi yield reduction. As a result of identifying the root-knot nematode species: M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Among them, M. arenaria is the most dominant. As the plant parasitic nematode infection route in fruit trees is often spread through the transplantation of infected seedlings, attention should be paid to the production of nematode-free plants during the production and supply of kiwifruit plants.
These studies were conducted to investigate nutrient sources and supplementary materials of synthetic compost media for Agaricus bisporus culture. Investigation were carried out to establish the optimum composition for compost of Agaricus bisporus methods of out-door fermentation and peakheating with rice straw as the main substrate of the media. The incidence and flora of harmful organisms in rice straw compost and their control were also studied. 1. When rice straw was used as the main substrate in synthetic compost as a carbon source. yields were remarkably high. Fermentation was more rapid than that of barley straw or wheat straw, and the total nitrogen content was high in rice straw compost. 2. Since the morphological and physico-chemical nature of Japonica and Indica types of rice straw are greatly dissimilar. there were apparent differences in the process of compost fermentation. Fermentation of Indica type straw proceeded more rapidly with a shortening the compost period, reducing the water supply, and required adding of supplementary materials for producing stable physical conditions. 3. Use of barley straw compost resulted in a smaller crop compared with rice straw. but when a 50%, barley straw and 50% rice straw mixture was used, the yield was almost the same as that using only rice straw. 4. There were extremely high positive correlations between yield of Agaricus bisporus and the total nitrogen, organic nitrogen, amino acids, amides and amino sugar nitrogen content of compost. The mycerial growth and fruit body formation were severely inhibited by ammonium nitrogen. 5. When rice straw was used as the main substrate for compost media, urea was the most suitable source of nitrogen. Poor results were obtained with calcium cyanamide and ammonium sulfate. When urea was applied three separate times, nitrogen loss during composting was decreased and the total nitrogen content of compost was increased. 6. The supplementation of organic nutrient activated compost fermentation and increased yield of Agaricus bisporus. The best sources of organic nutrients were: perilla meal, sesame meal, wheat bran and poultry manure, etc. 7. Soybean meal, tobacco powder and glutamic acid fermentation by-products which were industrial wastes, could be substituted for perilla meal, sesame meal and wheat bran as organic nutrient sources for compost media. B. When gypsum and zeolite were added to rice straw. physical deterioration of compost due to excess moisture and caramelization was observed. The Indica type of straw was more remarkable in increase of yield of Agricus bisporus by addition of supplementing materials than Japonica straw. 9. For preparing rice straw compost, the best mixture was prepared by 10% poultry manure, 5% perilla meal, 1. 2 to 1. 5% urea and 1% gypsum. At spring cropping, it was good to add rice bran to accelerate heat generation of the compost heap. 10. There was significantly high positive correlation (r=0.97) between accumulated temperature and the decomposition degree of compost during outdoor composting. The yield was highest at accumulated temperatures between 900 and $1,000^{\circ}C$. 11. Prolonging the composting period brought about an increase in decomposition degree and total nitrogen content, but a decrease in ammonium nitrogen. In the spring the suitable period of composting was 20 to 25 days. and about 15 days in autumn. For those periods, the degree of decomposition was 19 to 24%. 12. Compactness of wet compost at filling caused an increase in the residual ammonium nitrogen. methane and organic acid during peak heating. There was negative correlation between methane content and yield (r=0.76)and the same was true between volatile organic acid and yield (r=0.73). 13. In compost with a moisture content range between 69 to 80% at filling. the higher the moisture content, the lower the yield (r=0.78). This result was attributed to a reduction in the porosity of compost at filling the beds. The optimum porosity for good fermentation was between 41 and 53%. 14. Peak heating of the compost was essential for the prevention of harmful microorganisms and insect pests. and for the removal of excess ammonia. It was necessary to continue fer mentatiion for four days after peak heating. 15. Ten species of fungi which are harmful or competitive to Agaricus bisporus were identified from the rice compost, including Diehliomyces microsporus, Trichoderma sp. and Stysanus stemoites. The frequency of occurrance was notably high with serious damage to Agaricus bisporus. 16. Diehliomyces microsporus could be controlled by temperature adjustment of the growing room and by fumigating the compost and the house with Basamid and Vapam. Trichoderma was prevented by the use of Bavistin and Benomyl. 17. Four species of nematodes and five species of mites occured in compost during out-door composting. These orgnanisms could be controlled through peakheating compost for 6 hours at $60^{\circ}C$.
In order to evaluate the nitrogen (N) balance, from the different application methods and levels of $^{15}N$ applied to a satsuma mandarin orchard soils in spring, we surface-applied N as urea at the rates of 50 (water-dissolved), 100 (solid and water-dissolved) and 150% (solid) of the recommended rate ($180kg\;ha^{-1}$) in spring (lebeled N), summer (nonlebeled N) with application ratio of 5:2:3. Fruit yield and quality were not significantly affected by any treatment. Nitrogen contents of spring flush leaves in late August were 3.0% regardless of the treatments. The N recovery by parts of tree itself was in the order of leaves, fruits, roots, stems, and the highest recovery per tree was 22.3% in the 50% recommended water-dissolved surface broadcast while there were not much differences for N recovery (11.9 to 13.6%) among the other three treatments. Total N content in top 30cm of soils was 0.47% regardless of the treatments, but N proportion and total residual N from the fertilizer applied increased with increasing N rate while the N recovery in soils decreased. For the recommended N rate, N proportion and the residual N from the fertilizer applied were greater in the water-dissolved surface broadcast than those in soils surface broadcast. The highest total (tree + soils) N recovery was 70.9% in the 50% recommended water-dissolved surface broadcast, but tended to decrease to 52.2, 46.6, and 43.2% for the recommended water-dissolved surface broadcast, 100 and 150% of the recommended solid surface broadcast, respectively.
This study aimed to investigate the responses of plant growth and blossom-end rot (BER) incidence to calcium (Ca) and its three kinds of antagonistic cations (K, Mg, and $NH_4$-N) with various ratios in nutrient solution for sweet paper (Capsicum annuum L. 'RZ208'). Both Ca to each cation and Ca to a series of cation combinations, such as potassium (K), ammonium nitrate ($NH_4$), or magnesium (Mg) were more influential to the fruit growth and quality than plant growth. Especially, the BER incidence was significantly influenced by the ratio treatments. For examples, when Ca:(K + Mg) or Ca:(K + Mg + $NH_4$) ratio was 1:2 the highest incident rate of BER about 70.3 or 86.3% was observed, lowering the marketable yield to 19 or 13.7% of the total yield, respectively. The correlation coefficiencies (= r) to relationships between the BER and K as well as BER and $NH_4$ were 0.82 (P < 0.05) and 0.65 (P < 0.05), respectively. Combination only with the Mg element was not correlated with the BER incidence. However, when both of the K and Mg concentrations were 0.65 (P < 0.05). The highest correlation coefficiency, 0.92 (P < 0.05), was found to a relationship between the BER and the tree elemental combination.
A field experiment was conducted at Cheju from early March 1998 to early March 1999 to evaluate the effects of foliar applied urea on leaf N content and N recovery in satsuma mandarins (Citrus unshiu Marc.). Seven years old 'Okitsu Wase' trees received foliar spray of urea (22 or 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$) or soil application of urea (86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$). 56% of N was applied in spring, 11% in summer and 33% in fall. There were seven trees per N treatment and two trees per N treatment received $^{15}N$-labeled urea in spring and summer to determine N recovery. There were no differences between the treatments for fruit yield and its quality. Nitrogen content of spring flush leaf blades up to early September was greater for trees received foliar spray comparing with soil application but was not greatly affected by any treatment after mid-November. The recovery of fertilizer N in various parts of trees receiving foliar spray of 22 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$ was greatest, followed by receiving foliar spray of 43 g N and soil application of 86 g N. The recovery of fertilizer N in tree was 29.2 and 17.7% for foliar spray of 22 and 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively and 8.0% for soil application of 86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$. The recovery of fertilizer N in the upper 40 cm of soil was 50.3, 45.6, and 51.8% for foliar spray of 22 and 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, and soil application of 86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$ respectively. The total (tree, fallen leaves, winter weeds, and soil) recovery of fertilizer N was 81.8, 65.1, and 60.6% for foliar spray of 22 and 43 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, and soil application of 86 g N $tree^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the utilization value of legume crops collected in tropical and subtropical areas. We examined agronomic traits to assess domestic adaptability and evaluated useful components of foreign legumes. We used a total of 201 genetic resources of three legumes, consisting of 68 lentils, 72 chickpeas and 61 guars. The average number of days to flowering of the three legumes ranged from 56.7 to 60.8 days; the shortest in guar and longest in chickpea. The average number of days to growth of the three legumes ranged from the shortest 86.8 days in lentil, to the longest 163.9 days in guar. The maturation period of the three legumes lasted from the end of May until mid-September, based on sowing in March. However, the average yield of lentil was very low, ranging from 0.5 g to 30.6 g, with an average 16.4 g based on 10 plants per accession. The average 100 seed weight of the three legumes was 2.2 g for lentil, 22.9 g for chickpea, and 3.8 g for guar. The crude protein content ranged from 14.1% to 32.4% with an average of 20.4%, the highest for guar and the lowest for chickpea. The average crude oil content in the three legume crops was generally low, ranging from 0.8% in lentil, to 4.3% in chickpea. The average dietary fiber content in the three legume crops varied from 15.7% to 50.7%. Guar was the highest source of fiber, followed by chickpea (19.3%) and lentil (15.7%). From the agricultural traits analysis, chickpea and guar could grow domestically. However, lentil was difficult to flower and fruit normally during the warmer season after May. Therefore, lentil should be considered for late summer cropping during the cool season. The physicochemical properties of the three legumes seem to be useful as they are similar to, or better than, those of the control common bean.
