In this paper it was attempted to observe the effect of defatted panax ginseng supplement of the growth rate, feed and protein efficiency ratios, and the contents of cholesterol, total lipid and protein in the serum, liver and aorta in Sprague-Dowley Albino male rat (weighing 83 ${\pm}$ 4 g). Seven kinds of experimental diets were prepared as follows : Stock (control) diet, ginseng control diets supplemented with 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0% of ginseng powder to the stock diet, and defatted ginseng Powder diets supplemented with 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0% of defatted ginseng powder to the stock diet. .All diets contained same level of lipid and protein, respectively. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The growth rate in the feeding group of 0.5% defatted ginseng powder diet for 16week were higher than other diet groups. 2. Feed and Protein efficiency in 0.5% defatted ginseng group showed similar tendency to that in body growth rate. 3. The total cholesterol contents in the serum of 0.5% defatted ginseng Powder diet$.$ group showed the tendency to decrease gradually for 4 to 12 weeks, maintaining higher level than other groups. The free cholesterol contents in the serum of defatted ginseng powder diet group in 8 the and 16th weeks were higher than all ginseng control diet group. The total and free cholesterol contents in the liver of all defatted ginseng diet groups in 16th week were higher than hose of all ginseng control groups. The total cholesterol content at 12h week and the free cholesterol content at 16th week i n the aorta of all defatted ginseng diet groups were lower than those of ginseng control groups, respectively. 4. The total lipid contents in the serum of 1.0 and 3.0% defatted ginseng diet groups at 2nd to I2th weeks were lower than other groups, and those in the liver and aorta of all defatted ginseng diet groups at 12th weeks were lower than those of ginseng control diet groups. 5. The protein contents of the serum and aorta were continuously increased throughout whole experimental period in all experimental groups. The protein content of the liver of all groups were decreased at 2nd week and after then no change was observed.

This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of dietary fibers on serum and liver lipids of cholesterol-fed rats. Forty-two male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighed $145{\pm}10\;g$ were divided into 6 groups, each group receiving a different diet for 6 weeks, i.e., basal diet, basal diet plus 0.5% cholesterol without fiber, basal diet plus 0.5% cholesterol and 5% pectin, basal diet plus 0.5% cholesterol and 5% agar, basal diet plus 0.5% cholesterol and 5% pectin plus tannic acid mixture and basal diet plus 0.5% cholesterol and 5% tannic acid. The lowest net weight gain and digestibility were found in 5% tannic acid-containing group. The weight of kidney, heart and lung was significant by different, however, those of liver and spleen was not significantly different among the groups tested. GOT and GPT of serum were significantly higher in 0.5% cholesterol-containing group without fiber, whereas those of 5% pectin-containing group were significantly lower. Highest total serum protein content was found in 0.5% cholesterol-containing group without fiber. However, albumin and A/G ratio were not significant. The content of total lipid and cholesterol in serum were not significant by different among the groups studied, whereas crude lipid contents of liver in 5% tannic acid and pectin plus tannic acid-containing groups were significantly lower. Cholesterol content in the liver was significantly lower in 5% tannic acid-containing group. Crude lipid and sterol content of feces were significantly higher in 5% pectin-containing group.
In this study, total lipid and cholesterol contents and fatty acid composition of colostrum milk obtained from 30 normal mothers, 10 mothers who was delivered of preterm infant and 8 pregnancy induced hypertensive mothers were analyzed. While total cholesterol content in preterm colostrum was significantly lower than other groups (p<0.05), total lipid content was not different among three groups, ranged 2.24-.2.2g/dl. Composition of saturated fatty acide, such as lauric acid and myristic acid which are medium chain fatty acids in preterm milk were higher than those of normal-term and hypertensive mother's milk. There was no difference n total composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids and the rationh of $\omega$6/$\omega$3 among 3 group mother's colostrum, ranged 19.45-21.45% and 6.42-7.87, respectively. but the composition of arachidonic acid and DHA in colostrum of hypertensive mothers were significantly higher than those of normal and preterm mothers. These data indicates that gestational length and complications during pregnancy may change the lipid profile and fatty acid composition of hyman milk colosstrum.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the dietary effect of garlic powder (GP) and copper (Cu) on laying performances and the cholesterol content and quality characteristics of eggs during storage in laying hens. A total of one hundred and eighty, 50-wk-old, Hy-Line Brown layers were divided into 6 groups with 3 replicates per group (10 layers per replicate) and fed one of six diets containing GP 0%, GP 1%, GP 3%, GP 5%, Cu 200 ppm, or GP 3%-Cu 200 ppm for 5 wks. There were no differences in the laying performances and feed intakes bertween treatments. Eggshell strength, eggshell thickness and yolk color were also not affected by feeding of GP and Cu. With increasing dietary GP, Haugh unit was linearly increased after 2 wk of storage (p<0.05). The levels of serum total cholesterol in hens fed diets containing GP or Cu were lower than that of the control (p<0.05), but high density lipoprotein-cholesterol was not influenced by dietary GP or Cu. The content of egg yolk cholesterol from hens fed diets containing GP or Cu was significantly decreased from that of the control, except for the GP 1% group. Based on the results of this experiment, the decrease of Haugh unit during storage was alleviated by feeding of GP. The feeding of GP or Cu alone and in combination altered the cholesterol fractions in serum and reduced the content of egg yolk cholesterol in laying hens.
The lowering effect of cholesterol in Sprague Dawley rats was investigated with panaxydol which was purified from the petroleum ether soluble fraction(PESF) of Korean red ginseng. The level of total cholesterol(TC), Triglyceride(TG) and low density lipoprotein(LOL)-cholesterol in serum was reduced by $48\%,\;47\%\;and\;41\%,$ respectively while high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol was in creased up to $29\%$ as compared with their control values when the panaxydol(20 umoles. 5 mq/kq/day) was adminstered by intraperitoneal rout for 3 consecutive days along with a $1\%$ cholesterol diet. The hepatic ester cholesterol content which was increased in proportion to the cholesterol content of the diet in the control, clearly decreased with panaxydol administration to about $40\%$ regardless of the two diet cholesterol content. $1\%\;or\;2\%.$ A threshold of supression on the serum lipid levels in both administration routes was observed: the maximium suppression in i.p. and p.o. administration was observed to be at 5mq/kq b.w. and in the range of 50 - 100 mg/kg b.w., respectively. Panaxydol may reduce serum lipid and cholesterol levels by inhibiting cholesterol absorption and/or by modulating the cholesterol metabolism. at least in part.
This study was done to determine the effects of coix on the content of cholesterol. lipids, phosphoilpids, total bile acids in liver, plasma, and feces of rats fed containing 1% cholesterol. Four groups of experimental diets, such as soybean oil-starch diet, soybean oil-coix diet, lard-starch diet, lard-coix diet were fed ad libitum to the 6 weeks old white male rat of Spargue-Dawley strain for 27 days. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Plasma cholesterol level of the lard-starch group was significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05), and that of the lard-coix group was the lowest. The content of plasma triglyceride, total bile acids was not different among the lard-starch group was significantly higher than the other groups(p<0.05). 2) The contents of the liver lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides of the lard-coix group were significantly lower than the other groups(p<0.05). The contents of phospholipid of the liver of the lard-starch group was significantly lower than the other groups(p<0.05), and those of the soybean oil-coix group and the lard-coix group were high. 3) The contents of intestinal lipids, triglyceride, and phospholipid of the lard-coix group were significantly lower than the other groups(p<0.05). The contents of the intestinal tissue cholesterol of the lard-coix group was significantly lower than the other groups(p<0.05). 4) Cholesterol content of the feces was not different among the experimental groups. Triglyceride content of the feces of the soybean oil-starch group was significantly higher than the other groups, but total bile acid content of the feces was not different among the experimental groups. 5) Dry matter digestibility was not different among the experimental groups, but cholesterol retention was rather low when soybean oil-diet was fed. The results of this study reveales that coix has an effect to lower the plasma cholesterol level. Coix were decreased the content of liver cholesterol, increased the contend of liver phospholipid, and induced triglyceride excretion of the feces in the lard diet which lead to hypercholesterolemia. It could be suggested that the coix has influesced liped metabolsim in body.
This experiment was conducted to measure the effects of olive leaf powder on performance, egg yield, egg quality and yolk cholesterol level of laying hens. A total of 120 Lohmann Brown laying hens of 22 weeks old were used in this experiment. The birds were fed on standard layer diets containing 0, 1%, 2%, or 3% olive leaf powder for 8 weeks. Egg weight and yield were recorded daily; feed intake weekly; egg quality and cholesterol content at the end of the trial. Olive leaf powder had no effect on feed intake, egg weight, egg yield and feed conversion ratio (p>0.05) while olive leaf powder increased final body weight of hens (p<0.05). Dietary olive leaf powder increased yellowness in yolk color (p<0.01) without affecting other quality parameters. Yolk cholesterol content was tended to decrease about 10% (p>0.05). To conclude, olive leaf powder can be used for reducing egg yolk cholesterol content and egg yolk coloring agent in layer diets.
This experiment was made in order to observe the change in contents of the total cholesterol, free cholesterol and ester cholesterol in the liver and serum by the feeding of glucose and sucrose. The animals used for the experiment were adult male albino rat from a pure strain, weighing 285-332g. The animals were divided into standard, glucose and sucrose diet groups. The glucose and sucrose diet groups were redivided into 10%, 25% and 40% diet groups. Their liver and serum were used as sample after they were fed with the corresponding diets, respectively, for two months. 1. In the liver, the total cholesterol and ester cholesterol contents in the 40% glucose diet group were significantly increased and the free cholesterol contents in all diets were respectively increased, compared with the standard diet group. 2. In the serum, the total cholesterol contents in both diet groups, the 10% glucose and 10% sucrose, were decreased but the content in the 40% sucrose diet group was increased, compared with the standard diet group. The free cholesterol contents in the 10 and 40% glucose diet and 10% sucrose diet group were decreased, compared with the standard diet group. The ester cholesterol contents in the 10% glucose and 10% sucrose diet groups were decreased but the content in the 40% sucrose diet group was increased, compared with the standard diet group. Being taken into consideration of the above facts it was acquired that the cholesterol contents are affected by the amounts and kinds of dietary carbohydrate when the protein contents in each diet were constant.
To investigate the effects mustard leaf(Brassica Juncea) on Cholesterol metabolism, male Sprague Dawley rate were fed semipurified diets containing 2% or 4% mustard leaf with or without cholesterol for 5 weeks. Plasma cholesterol content decreased significantly by feeding 4% mustard leaf with of without cholesterol for 5 weeks. Plasma cholesterol content decreased significantly by feeding 4% mustard leaf in rats fed 1% cholesterol in the diet. In addition, HDL-cholesterol increased slightly by the feeding of mustard leaf, resulting in a significant increase in the HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio and a reduction of atherosclerotic index. However, levels of plasma lipids were not influenced by mustared leaf in rats fed cholesterol-free diet. The contents of all classes of lipid in liver increased by dietary cholesterol. Of the liver lipids, triglyceride and cholesterol ester were accumulated most, showing a fatty liver synodrome. Supplementation of mustard leaf to cholesterol-containing diet resulted in a slight decrease in neutral lipid contents of liver. Fecal cholesterol excretion was higher by more than 2.7 and 3.3-fold in rats fed 2 and 4% mustard leaf than in control rats fed cholesterol. Similar trends were found in fecal bile salt excretion; rats fed and 4% mustard leaf excreted more bile salts by more than 1.5 and 2% than those fed control diet containing cholesterol. In summary, mustard leaf may have an antiatherogenci effect of reducing plasma cholesterol level and increasing HDL-cholesterol level. The plasma cholesterol lowering effect of mustard leaf is suggested to be due, at least in part, to increase in fecal excretion of cholesterol and bile acids.
We investigated the effect of a green seaweed Capsosiphon fulvescens extract (CFE) on the serum, liver tissue, and fecal cholesterol levels in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (four weeks old) were given on of three diets for four weeks: basal, high cholesterol, and CFE, The total serum and liver tissue cholesterol levels in the CFE group were significantly decreased compared to those in the cholesterol group. The CFE group showed increased amounts of feces, total fecal bile acid and dietary fiber as compared to basal and cholesterol group. Hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed fat droplets in the livers of the rats in the cholesterol group; however, a decreased number of droplets was observed in the rats fed the CFE diet. Our results suggest that CFE supplementation may improve lipid metabolism, by controling serum and liver tissue cholesterol levels, and by increasing the total amounts of bile acid, dietary fiber and cholesterol excretion in feces.
