  • TCDD, one of the notorious toxic environmental pollutants, damages various organs including liver and is regarded as an endocrine disrupter. To investigate the effects of Houttuynia cordata Thunb (HCT) on the biochemical parameters of function, liver and serum of TCDD-treated rats were used. Seven days after the injection of TCDD (1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg), HCT (200 mg/kg) was administered to rats on every other day for four weeks. The lipidperoxide activity was examined by measuring the level of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, total lipid and triglyceride (TG) in serum, and malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver tissue of rats. Result showed that lipidperoxidation was inhibited In the significant level when 2,3,7,8-TCDD-damaged rats were treated with HCT.

  • This study aims to provide the relevant basis upon which prediction of dyslipidemia should be made based on body information. Using the National Health Insurance big data (3,312,971 people) canonical correlation analysis was performed between body information and lipid-profile. Body information included age, height, weight and waist circumference, while the lipid-profile included total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. As a result, when the waist circumference and the weight are large, triglycerides increase and HDL cholesterol level decreases. In terms of age, weight, waist circumference, and HDL cholesterol, the canonical variates (the degree of influence) were significantly different according to sex. In particular, the canonical variate was dramatically changed around the forties and fifties in women in terms of weight, waist circumference, and HDL cholesterol. The canonical correlation results of the health care big data presented in this study will help construct a predictive model that can evaluate an individual's health status based on body information that can be easily measured in a non-invasive manner.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the clinical effects of Tongbiyeum(TBY) ₂on hyperlipidemia. The hyperlipidemia of rats was induced by feeding high cholesterol diet for 4 weeks. We checked serum lipids and body weight weekly for 4 weeks. After the termination of treatment, we measured liver weight and observed histopathological change. We compared result of TBY group with control group. Thereafter, we made a study of 37 hyperlipidemic patients who visited us, the oriental medical center Daejeon and cheongju of Daejeon University, from November, 2001 to April, 2002. After administering TBY for 1 month, we followed up their total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-Cholesterol levels. The results were as follows; TBY treatment inhibited the liver weight gain induced by high cholesterol diet as compared with control group. TBY treatment inhibited lipid droplet accumulation and apoptotic change in liver as compared with control group. TBY treatment significantly inhibited the increasing of serum triglyceride and total cholesterol levels induced by high cholesterol diet as compared with control group but not affect HDL-cholesterol level. After administering TBY, the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol levels of hyperlipidemic patients were decreased significantly. After administering TBY, the serum HDL-Cholesterol level of hyperlipidemic patients had no significant changes. According to above mentioned results, we can infer that TBY has hypolipidemic effect to be applicable to artheriosclerosis.

  • To elucidate the effects of an obesity control program on body composition and serum lipid levels, 31 obese elementary students (male: 25, female: 6) residing in the Gyeonggi area were evaluated and their body composition, serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG (triglyceride) were analyzed. The average age, height, weight and BMI (body mass index) were $11.52{\pm}1.00\;yrs$, $151.96{\pm}8.04\;cm$, $68.21{\pm}9.03\;kg$ and $29.40{\pm}1.79\;kg/m^2$ for the males, respectively, and $11.17{\pm}1.17\;yrs$, $147.83{\pm}5.15\;cm$, $65.05{\pm}10.86\;kg$ and $29.62{\pm}3.24\;kg/m^2$ for the females, respectively. There was a significant decrease in BMI for males (p<0.001) and females (p<0.05). There were also significant changes in all of the biochemical levels evaluated before and after the study. Specifically, the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG level decreased after the obesity control program, while the HDL-cholesterol level increased after the program. These results indicate that obesity control programs do change the BMI, serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and TG levels in obese elementary students. Thus, obesity control programs are urgently needed to prevent degenerative disease and decrease obesity among children in elementary school.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence and differences of risk factors of Metabolic syndrome according to menopausal status. From the database of the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V) conducted in 2012, data of 3,537 women who responded to health interview and health examination questionnaires. The presence of Metabolic syndrome was assessed using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. The prevalence of Metabolic syndrome was 17.3% in premenopause and 54.3% in postmenopause. BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and Ferritin were higher in postmenopausal women compared to premenopausal women. However, postmenopausal women had lower HDL cholesterol and TIBC when compared to premenopausal women. Hypertension was the most prominent characteristic of postmenopausal women. Low HDL cholesterol showed up as a meaningful factor in premenopausal women. According to multiple regression analysis, waist circumference, fasting glucose, and HDL cholesterol were independent predictors of menopause. Therefore, obesity control and blood lipids management is recommended for postmenopausal women.

  • The hypolipidemic effects of soybeam paste containing mycelia of Phellinus linteus, Cordyceps militaris, Ganoderma lucidum were evaluated in hyperlipidemic rats. Body weight of the rats fed with soybean paste containing mycelia of Ganoderma lucidum (ESG) were significantly lower than control group whereas, there was no significant difference in body weight in order diet groups. Food intake, food efficiency ratio, and liver and kidney weights were not significantly different among the diet groups examined. However, the spleen weight of ESG group was markedly lower than other groups. Significant decreases in serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and liver total cholesterol were also observed in all diet groups tested. All groups fed with soybean paste containing mycelia of mushroom were also observed in all diet groups tested. All groups fed with soybean paste containing mycelia of mushroom were almost equally effective in increasing plasma HDL level and decreasing the atherogenic index, whereas the ratio of HDL to total cholesterol was significantly increased in all experimental diet groups.

  • This study was designed to investigate the antihyperlipidemic activity of Fermented Rhus Verniciflua Stokes Extract(FRVSE) on diet-induced hyperlipidemia in rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups of the normal group(fed with normal diet), control group(fed with high fat diet), sample A group(fed with high fat diet and medicated FRVSE 192 ㎎/㎏/day), sample B group(fed with high fat diet and medicated FRVSE 384 ㎎/㎏/day), and received oral administration of each prescription with diet for a period of six weeks. The changes in the body weight, the liver weight, the epididymal fat weight, and the plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride(TG), high density lipoprotein(HDL) cholesterol and low density lipoprotein(LDL) cholesterol were measured. In sample A group, the weight of liver and plasma level of TG decreased significantly. There was a significant decrease in the plasma level of total cholesterol, TG and LDL cholesterol in the sample B group. These results suggest that the FRVSE have a good antihyperlipidemic activity and a potential to treat hyperlipidemia.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of swimming training and cholesterol diet on the activation of hepatic antioxidant enzymes and serum lipid in Sprague Dawley rats(24 weeks of age). They were divided into five groups which were made up of normal-diet detraining group(C), 2% cholesterol-diet detraining group(CC), 2% cholesterol-diet swimming training groups which were classified according to their training time(CSA: 12min, CSB:8min, CSC:4min). They were given normal diet for the first 6weeks and then, separated normal-dietary and 2% cholesterol-dietary for 14 weeks. During these periods, 10 weeks’ swimming training was performed after 4 weeks later. And then we analyzed blood and liver by decapitating those rats. Swimming training showed a tendency to increase the activation of GSH-peroxidase, Nonprotein-SH and malondialdehyde, and decrease total- cholesterol, LSL-C/HDL-C and VLDL significantly. Whereas, cholesterol diet which has no training showed decrease the activation of hepatic antioxodant enzymes, and increase total-cholesterol and LDL-C/HDL-C absolutely. These results suggest that swimming training should stimulate the activation of hepatic antioxidant enzymes and decrease total-cholestrol even if they had cholesterol diet.
