Microwave를 이용한 칫솔 살균효과 (Toothbrush sterilizing effects of using microwave)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the sterilizing effects of toothbrushes by administering bacteria into toothbrushes and reproducing the antibacterial effects using a microwave oven. Methods : The heads of four-row mid-strength toothbrushes were cut, put in a bacterial solution ($3{\times}10^9cells/ml$) for vortexing, and sterilized with microwaves for 0, 30, and 60 seconds. They were then moved into four tubes containing DW 10 ml and suspended in a vortex mixer for two minutes to separate bacteria from them. DW 9ml was added by 1ml of bacteria for dilution of $10{\sim}10^6$ times. It was then administered to the BHI agar plate by 0.1ml and cultured at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Total number of bacteria adhered to a toothbrush was obtained by multiplying the number of colonies by the dilution factor. The experiment was done in the first, second, and third step, being repeated in a normal temperature drier ($23^{\circ}C$) after 5, 9 and 24 hours. Results : The results of the experiment revealed that the sterilizing effects were 95% or over. When toothbrushes were sterilized for 60 seconds, the number of colonies is about 11 after drying for 5 hours, 7 after drying for 9 hours and 2 after drying for 24 hours. The sterilizing effects reached 98% when the bacteria-administered toothbrush was sterilized for 1 minute after drying for 24 hours. Conclusions : The results demonstrated that toothbrush sterilizing by using microwave is a suitable way to prevent cross-contamination of toothbrushes by oral bacterial infection and thus easy to use at home. However, this study suggests that toothbrush sterilizing by using microwave should be limited within two times a week because the physical properties of toothbrush might be changed.

Effect of Ultra-Soft and Soft Toothbrushes on the Removal of Plaque and Tooth Abrasion

  • To improve the oral health status of Korean people, it is necessary to encourage proper oral hygiene management habits, such as toothbrushing, through appropriate health promotion techniques. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the removal of plaque and tooth abrasion using ultra-soft (filament 0.11~0.12 mm) and soft toothbrushes for toothbrushing. The plaque removal was performed using a dentiform and Arti-spray, and the Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) index was calculated as the sum total score divided by the total number of surfaces. In the abrasivity experiment, according to the number of brushings, a micro Vickers hardness tester was used, and a sample in the range of 280~380 Vickers hardness number was selected. The number of toothbrushing stroke were 1,800 (2 months), 5,400 (6 months), 10,800 (12 months), and 21,600 (24 months). The tooth abrasion was measured using a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 and a p-value <0.05 was considered significant. According to the results, there was no statistically significant difference in the degree of plaque removal between ultra-soft and soft toothbrushes. The difference in tooth abrasion between before and after toothbrushing was found to be greater with the soft toothbrushes than with the ultra-soft toothbrushes. Therefore, the ultra-soft toothbrush not only lowers tooth damage by reducing tooth abrasion, but also shows a similar ability to remove plaque as soft toothbrushes.

일반 칫솔과 씹는 칫솔의 치면세균막 제거 효과 융합연구 (A Convergence Study on Removal Effects of Dental Plaque from General and Chewing Toothbrush)

  • 본 연구에서는 일반 칫솔과 씹는 칫솔의 치면세균막 제거효과를 비교하고 이를 통해 현재 출시된 씹는 칫솔이 일반 칫솔의 대용품으로 사용할만한 실용성을 갖추고 있는지와 실생활에서의 활용도 여부 등을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 대상자는 전신 질환이 없으며 잔존치아 16개 이상 존재하는 구강상태가 양호한 20대의 건강한 성인 30명을 대상으로 하였으며, 일반칫솔과 씹는 칫솔 사용 후 치면세균막지수 감소율을 계산하였다. 일반 칫솔과 씹는 칫솔의 사용 전 후 치면세균막 감소효과를 비교한 결과, 일반 칫솔의 경우 PHP index는 7.02에서 1.91로 감소하여 치면세균막이 72.79% 감소한 결과를 나타내었으며, 씹는 칫솔은 6.72에서 4.08로 감소하여 치면세균막이 39.29% 감소한 결과를 나타내었다. 현재 국내에서는 다양한 구강관리용품이 출시되어 판매되고 있으며 일반인들의 올바른 구강관리용품 선택을 위하여 구강관리용품에 대한 다양한 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

전동칫솔모의 작동형태에 따른 치면세균막 제거율에 관한 실험연구 (An experimental study on plaque removal effect through the acting types of the electric toothbrushes)

  • Objectives : The removal of most reliable mechanical dental plaque that is to say tooth brushing was generalized to control of dental plaque, many oral health goods have also developed due to the effect differences followed by individual habit. The electric toothbrush have studied and developed widely as major field of study that electric toothbrush having various moving phase was sold and developed at the market. Methods : Accordingly author studied about selling electric toothbrushes shape (vibration type, ultra-sonic minuteness vibration type, semi rotation type) to raise the efficiency after comparing to the moving them that total 8 groups classified by poor tooth models for example normal set of tooth, crowding tooth, bracket attached tooth, prosthetic status etc. and executed plaque removal effect on the tooth through comparing experiment. Results : The removal rate of artificial plaque on the tooth was improved in proportion to the increase of tooth brushing time(p<0.05). The ultra-sonic minuteness vibration and semi rotation type was superior to toothbrush of vibration type comparing to the removal rate of plaque on the tooth(p<0.05). Conclusions : The electric toothbrush of supersonic minuteness vibration and semi rotation type can be recommended most of tooth types regardless of oral tooth setting status for example, normal set of tooth, crowding tooth, bracket attached tooth, porcelain tooth.

구강관리용품에 대한 검색어 분석을 통한 선호도 융합 분석 : 구글트렌드를 이용하여 (Analysis of preference convergence by analyzing search words for oralcare products : Using the Google trend)

  • 본 연구는 구강관리용품 중 가장 대표적인 칫솔과 치약에서 이용자가 얻고자 하는 관련검색어를 통하여 이용자가 기대하는 선택정보를 구글 트렌드를 활용, 분석하여 이를 구강관리용품에 대한 교육의 기초자료로 제공하고자 한다. 구글 트렌드에서 제공하는 최초 시점인 2006년부터 2018년 현재(9월)까지의 시기에서 영문 Toothbrush와 Toothpaste를 검색한 뒤 인기순으로 정렬하여 노출되는 관련 검색어 각 25개 총325개의 검색어를 연도별로 수집하였다. 그 후 이용자가 기대하는 검색기능을 파악하는 검색어 세부분석방법과 빅데이터 프로그램 넷마이너를 활용한 단어 네트워크 분석의 두가지 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과 전 세계적으로 Toothbrush에 대하여 브랜드에 대한 기대와 관심이 높았으며 Toothpaste에 대하여 치약의 기능에 대한 기대와 관심이 높았다. 이를 통해 구강교육의 동기부여를 높이기 위해 칫솔은 브랜드, 치약은 치약의 기능에 대한 지식과 정보를 활용하고 제공함으로써 환자의 흥미를 높이는 것이 효과적으로 판단된다.

A comparison of the elimination rate of artificial dental plaque between reciprocating- and rotating-interdental toothbrushes

  • Objectives: Interdental toothbrushes are made and sold in various design types and brush thicknesses. However, there is little research on which type of interdental toothbrush currently manufactured and sold on the market is the most effective in eliminating interdental plaque. Therefore, this study aims at comparing the elimination rate of artificial dental plaque between reciprocating- and rotating-types of interdental toothbrush based on the frequency of application and thickness of brush. Methods: This study focused on the effective management of dental plaque using interdental toothbrush, a recommended item for personal dental hygiene. The method was as follows: artificial dental plaque coloring was applied to the distal surface of artificial tooth #46 and the mesial surface of #47. The area was subject to reciprocal movement three and six times to eliminate artificial plaque. Results: The results showed that using a 0.7mm rotating interdental toothbrush, on the proximal surface of each molar, the elimination rates were: on the distal surface of #46, upon three applications 40.24%, upon six applications 30.41%; on the mesial surface of #47, upon three applications 44.52%, upon six applications 29.72%. Conclusions: These results showed that for rotating-type interdental toothbrushes, a high dental plaque elimination rate was observed even though many reciprocal movements were not performed.

일부 어린이집 유아의 칫솔 마모도 및 마모율 평가 (Evaluation of Toothbrush Bristles' Wear Index and Wear Rate Used by Preschool Children)

  • 본 연구는 어린이집에서 유아들이 사용하고 있는 칫솔의 칫솔마모 상태를 평가하여, 유아의 칫솔 교체시기에 대한 적절한 기준을 확립하는 데 도움을 주고자 2012년 9월 20일부터 11월 6일까지 1,022개의 칫솔을 수거한 뒤 칫솔마모도 및 마모율을 평가하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 칫솔마모도 측정 결과, 조사 대상 칫솔 중 48.5%가 0.400 이상의 마모도를 보였고, 평균 마모도는 $0.421{\pm}0.239$로 조사되어, 전체적으로 높은 칫솔마모도를 보였다. 2. 칫솔마모율 측정 결과, 마모율 2점과 3점이 차지하는 비율이 70.4%였으며, 평균 마모율은 $1.936{\pm}0.848$로 나타나 전체적으로 높은 칫솔마모율을 보였다. 3. 칫솔관리 실태에 대한 조사 결과, 평균 칫솔 교환주기는 5~8주가 63.9%로 가장 많았고, 칫솔 교환방법은 칫솔모의 마모 상태에 따라 교체한다는 응답이 52.7%로 조사되었다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로, 유아들의 칫솔에 대한 관리가 적절히 이루어질 수 있도록 보육을 담당하는 교사 및 보호자에 대한 지도가 필요할 것이며, 유아의 올바른 칫솔 교체주기에 대한 명확한 기준 확립과 효율적인 구강보건교육 방안도 마련되어야 할 것이다.

Analysis of Microbial Contamination and Antibacterial Effect Associated with Toothbrushes

  • The purpose of this study was to propose a method for the effective management of toothbrush contamination. Toothbrush microbial contamination was analyzed according to the duration of toothbrush use, frequency of toothbrush use per day, and toothbrush storage location. We also analyzed the microbial reduction effect of vinegar, antimicrobial mouth rinse, bamboo salt, and baking soda, which are sterilization materials that can be easily used every day. We collected 45 toothbrushes from university dormitories from May to June 2018. To determine the degree of microbiological contamination with general bacteria, coliform bacteria, and Staphylococcus aureus, bristle samples were cultured at $36^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours using 3M$^{TM}$ Petrifilm plates and then measured based on Petrifilm evaluation criteria. Toothbrush microorganisms were analyzed according to the duration of use, frequency of use per day, storage location, and effect of each sterilization material. General bacteria, coliforms, and S. aureus contamination increased with frequency and duration of use (p<0.05). In particular, S. aureus showed a statistically significant increase to 36.15 CFU/ml after 1 month, 504.23 CFU/ml after 2 months, and 2,386.67 CFU/ml after 3 months (p<0.05). We found that 1% vinegar was the most effective substance for reducing general bacteria, coliforms, and S. aureus. In addition, 1% antimicrobial mouth rinse solution applied for 5 minutes was the most effective in reducing S. aureus. It is crucial to recognize the importance of toothbrush care and store toothbrushes in a dry place and replace them periodically. We recommend use of vinegar and antimicrobial mouth rinse solution to disinfect toothbrushes. These should be applied as a 1% solution for at least 1 minute. Proper care of toothbrushes is important in maintaining oral health as well as overall health. Instructions on toothbrush care should be given when teaching children or adults how to brush teeth.

보육시설 유아 사용 칫솔의 식중독 미생물 분포 및 독소 유전자 (Prevalence and Toxin Genes of Food-Borne Pathogens Isolated from Toothbrush in Child Care Center)

  • 어린이집 유아들이 사용하는 칫솔 및 양치 컵의 미생물 오염도와 분리된 식중독 미생물의 독소 유전자 및 독소 생산능력을 분석하여 칫솔과 양치 컵에 의해 발생할 수 있는 식중독을 예방하고자 칫솔 75개, 칫솔걸이 29개, 양치 컵 65개를 실험하였다. 일반세균수는 평균 5.3 log CFU 검출되었고 칫솔은 평균 6.7 log CFU 검출되어 가장 높은 오염도를 나타내었다. 대장균군은 칫솔 75건 중 41건 (54.7%), 칫솔걸이 29건 중 13건 (44.8%), 양치 컵 65건 중 29건 (44.6%)에서 검출되었으며 진균수는 평균 3.2 log CFU 검출되었고 칫솔이 평균 4.6 log CFU 검출되어 칫솔의 대장균군, 진균 오염도가 가장 높게 나타났다. Salmonella spp.는 모든 시료에서 검출되지 않았으나 B. cereus는 칫솔 75건 중 1건 (1.3%), 양치 컵 65건 중 2건 (3.1%)에서 검출되었고 S. aureus는 양치 컵 65건 중 1건 (1.5%)에서 검출되었다. 칫솔에서 분리된 B. cereus의 경우 nheA, nheB, nheC, hblC, hblD, hblA, entFM 등 7종의 설사독소 유전자가 검출되었고 양치 컵에서 분리된 B. cereus 2균주는 nheA, nheB, nheC, entFM 설사독소 유전자만 검출되었다. 칫솔에서 분리된 B. cereus의 경우 HBL, NHE 설사독소를 생산하였고 양치 컵에서 분리된 B. cereus 2균주는 모두 NHE 설사독소만을 생산하였다. B. cereus는 ${\beta}-lactam$계 항생제에 내성을 나타내었고 S. aureus는 ampicillin과 penicillin에만 내성을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과는 대부분의 칫솔과 양치 컵이 양치 후 젖은 상태로 화장실에 보관되거나 젖은 상태로 자외선 살균고에서 살균되는 등 부적절한 보관가 살균방법이 주요 원인으로 분석되었다. 따라서 면역력이 취약한 어린이집 유아가 사용하는 칫솔 및 양치컵을 건조한 후 자외선 살균고 등을 이용 살균하여 상대 습도가 낮은 건조한 곳에 보관하여야 할 것으로 판단되었다.

Antibacterial Effect of Electrolyzed Water on Oral Bacteria

  • This study investigated the antibacterial effect of electrolyzed water on oral bacteria both in vitro and in vivo. Tap water was electrolyzed in a water vessel using platinum cell technology. The electrolyzed tap water (called Puri-water) was put in contact with five major periodontopathogens or toothbrushes contaminated with these bacteria for 30 sec. In addition, Puri-water was used as a mouthwash for 30 sec in 16 subjects and the antibacterial effect on salivary bacteria was evaluated. Puri-water significantly reduced the growth of all periodontopathogens in culture and on toothbrushes, and that of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in saliva, when compared to the effect of tap water. It also significantly reduced mutans streptococci growing on mitis salivarius-bacitracin agar. Our results demonstrate that the electrolyzed tap water is effective as a mouthwash and for toothbrush disinfection.
