This study was done to evaluate the reliability of the digital color analysis system (ShadeScan, CYNOVAD, Montreal. Canada) for dentistry. Sixteen tooth models were made by injecting the A2 shade chemical cured resin for temporary crown into the impression acquired from 16 adults. Surfaces of the model teeth were polished with resin polishing cloth. The window of the ShadeScan handpiece was placed on the labial surface of tooth and tooth images were captured, and each tooth shade was analyzed with the ShadeScan software. Captured images were selected in groups, and compared one another. Two models were selected to evaluate repeatability of ShadeScan, and shade analysis was performed 10 times for each tooth. And, to ascertain the color difference of same shade code analyzed by ShadeScan, CIE $L^*a^*b^*$values of shade guide of Gradia Direct (GC, Tokyo, Japan) were measured on the white and black background using the Spectrolino (GretagMacbeth, USA), and Shade map of each shade guide was captured using the ShadeScan. There were no teeth that were analyzed as A2 shade and unique shade. And shade mapping analyses of the same tooth revealed similar shade and distribution except incisal third. Color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) among the Shade map which analyzed as same shade by ShadeScan were above 3. Within the limits of this study, digital color analysis instrument for dentistry has relatively high repeatability, but has controversial in accuracy.
Color is an important factor in dental esthetics. Application of natural tooth color will not fail to produce pleasing results. But a standardized method of shade matching has not been adopted. If we are to overcome the color matching problem in dentistry, an understanding of the nature of color and light is essential. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different light sources and different background colors on the ability of observers to correctly match shades of artifical teeth. And observation was made to determine if the time spent in making a shade match was a factor in the correctness of the response. A test method was devised and 50 individuals made observations which were recorded and analyzed. $X^2$-test gave results indicating that the time factor had no effect on the response made. An analysis of variance showed the following effects significant at the five percent level; (1) light source (2) background color (3) subject. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study; (1) The time spent in making shade selection is not a factor in the correctness of the selections. (2) The light source used is an important factor in matching tooth shade; and there is no significant difference between the light sources in shade matching. (3) Under the conditions of this study, the greatest accuracy in shade matching was obtained on the brown background.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the perception and satisfaction of faces and the need for aesthetic dental treatments in college students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 247 college students in Suncheon from August 29 to September 2, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of satisfaction of face (16 items), perception of the face (7 items), need for aesthetic dental treatment (3 items), and general characteristics of the study subjects (8 items). Tooth shade was measured using a shade guide (VITA classical shade guide, VITA North America, Chicago, USA). Data was analyzed using t test, ANOVA, and post hoc $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test. Results: The students were satisfied with eye, mouth corner, and lip, but they were not satisfied with tooth shade, bilateral symmetry of face, and angle of jaw. The students tended to be concious of perception of others. Their most common tooth shade was orange and yellow. They preferred to have a brighter tooth color. Conclusions: To satisfy the needs of patients, it is important to understand the perception and satisfaction of face and the need for aesthetic dental treatment.
Statement of problem : A scientific examination and understanding of overall aspects of the natural dentition is the first step involved in making a satisfactory selection in the shade of an aesthetic prosthesis. Proper natural shade selection of the prosthetic restoration that is in harmony with the remaining dentition is as important aesthetically, as harmony of form and function in the anterior dentition. Clinically, the most commonly applied method of shade selection has been visual, but because of the subjective nature inherent to this method, shade selection results are variable and can be influenced by such factors as the technician, the type of shade guide used, and the type and intensity of the lighting. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to develop a more objective and scientific approach to examining and understanding the shade of teeth, which has in turn lead to the development of a number of shade analysis devices that present a more objective method of shade analysis. Material and Method : In this study, the shades of healthy anterior teeth were examined and analyzed using the recently developed digital shade analysis of the $ShadeScan^{TM}$ System. The study examined 80 individuals in their twenties, 40 males and 40 females, presenting 6 healthy, unrestored maxillary anterior teeth. Tooth brushing and oral prophylaxis were performed prior to evaluation. The ShadeScan handpiece was used to acquire images of the 6 maxillary anterior teeth. These images were analyzed using the Vita/Classical mode of the $ShadeScan^{TM}$ Software, and shade maps of each tooth were acquired and divided into cervical, middle, and incisal thirds. The shade distribution of each third, left and right symmetry, and gender differences were investigated and analyzed. Results : The results of the study are as follows : 1. An overwhelming majority of the examined teeth were found to possess shades belong to Group A, with the greatest variations occurring at the middle and cervical thirds of the maxillary central and lateral incisors, in both male and female subjects. 2. Canines of both male and female subjects showed left and right symmetry with uniform shade distribution of A4 and C4, while the lateral and central incisors showed left-right symmetry of the incisal 1/3 with a uniform shade distribution of A2 and A3 shades 3. No significant differences in shade distribution were seen between genders in maxillary canines, whereas maxillary central and lateral incisors showed differences at the middle and cervical thirds between male and female subjects The results of this study show that with the exception of maxillary canines, maxillary anterior teeth display a diverse shade distribution as well as gender differences. Conclusion : Clinically, when making a shade selection using the existing shade guide, one must consider the fact that even a single tooth consists of a variety of shades. The results of this study show that when selecting a shade from a number of groups is difficult, shades from A group are the most consistent with the natural shade or maxillary anterior teeth.
PURPOSE. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of different shade selection techniques and determine the matching success of crown restorations fabricated using digital shade selection techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Teeth numbers 11 and 21 were prepared on a typodont model. For the #11 tooth, six different crowns were fabricated with randomly selected colors and set as the target crowns. The following four test groups were established: Group C, where the visual shade selection was performed using the Vita 3D Master Shade Guide and the group served as the control; Group Ph, where the shade selection was performed under the guidance of dental photography; Group S, where the shade selection was performed by measuring the target tooth color using a spectrophotometer; and Group I, where the shade selection was performed by scanning the test specimens and target crowns using an intraoral scanner. Based on the test groups, 24 crowns were fabricated using different shade selection techniques. The ΔE values were calculated according to the CIEDE2000 (2:1:1) formula. The collected data were analyzed by means of a one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS. For the four test groups (Groups C, Ph, S, and I), the following mean ΔE values were obtained: 2.74, 3.62, 2.13, and 3.5, respectively. No significant differences were found among the test groups. CONCLUSION. Although there was no statistically significant difference among the shade selection techniques, Group S had relatively lower ΔE values. Moreover, according to the test results, the spectrophotometer shade selection technique may provide more successful clinical results.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of external stain that long term attrition caused by tooth brushing affected the color variation of external stain of IPS e.max Press Porcelain. The specimen was made by IPS e.max Press LT ingots, and treated the shade of external staning as Orange, A, B, C, D After conducting horizontal toothbrush strokes about 11,000 / 22,000 / 44,000 / 66,000 / 88,000, Color changers of the external stained layer was measured with SpectroShade$^{tm}$ MICRO(MHT, Italy). The result of this study was obtained as follows: 1. After 11,000 strokes, the color changes of shade were greater in Orange shade than the other 4 shade groups. And even though toothbrush strokes were increased until 88,000, there were no statistical significant color changes about the external stain shade variation. 2. The amount of color variation about increasing of toothbrushing strokes was irregular(no consistent increasing, or decreasing), and it was no statistical significant changes According to these results, the long term tooth-brushing doesn't affect the changes of external stain about IPS e.max press porcelain. And it doesn't reduce the stability of external stain clinically. Later, it will be needed to study other factors affecting the external stain.
Statement of problem: There are two methods of color choice for the esthetic restoration. One is visual shade matching which draws a comparison between shade guide and teeth in dentist's own eye and the other is using a digital shade analysis system recently introduced. Although the visual shade matching has a lot of problems, decision of color by this visual shade matching and the ways of expression for the decided color are still applicable to clinical dentistry. Purpose: This study is designed to investigate shade guides used in the dental clinics and laboratories have the same value using ShadeEye-$NCC^{(R)}$ dental chroma meter (Shofu Inc., Kyoto, Japan) using shade guide are evaluated. Material and methods: At the first experiment, eight Vita Lumin Vacuum shade guides (Vident Inc., California, USA) were collected from the dental clinics. A1 and B1 shade tabs are chosen and the colors are analyzed five times each in both tooth and porcelain modes by digital shade analysis system, ShadeEye-$NCC^{(R)}$. In the second experiment, twelve Vita shade guides using practically in the dental clinics and laboratories were collected and also A1 and B1 shade tabs are chosen and the colors of A1 and B1 are analyzed one time each in both tooth and porcelain modes by ShadeEye-$NCC^{(R)}$. Results and conclusion: There were significant differences among eight shade guides in terms of shade (chroma), value and hue in both of A1 and B1 (P<.05). Shade guides using in present both dental clinics and laboratories did not show significant differences, except A1 in the porcelain mode, it showed significant differences (P<.05) in the shade even though the shade tab has the same name.

One of the most important aspect of esthetic dentistry is shade selection. Alterations to perception of color can occur as a result of numerous factors, including light source, tooth surface texture, observer's ability, surrounding colors, the angle of observation, light and dark adaptation and others. During the clinical procedures, tooth might be in dry or semi-dry condition. The purpose of this study was to compare the shade changes in wet and dry conditions of natural tooth. Groups of measurement are an initial wet condition as control, dry in 10seconds, 1 minute, 5minutes and 30seconds air dry. Using Shadeeye, color difference(${\Delta}E$) between measurements were analyzed and there were significant differences between groups. But most of the differneces were <3.7 ${\Delta}E$ unit. Such differences are below the threshold for perceivable color mismathces in intraoral condition. Shade selection with an intraoral colorimeter could be changes in dry and wet condition but there might be no significant differences in visual color mathing.

This study was conducted in order to assess whether the form of the shade guide affects in deciding the color of the teeth using the shade guide Eight shade light cured composite resins (Esthet-X, Dentsply, Milford, USA) were used in this study. Shade guides including the model of maxillary central incisors, teeth-form shade guide, doughnut form shade guide, and shade guide with perforated gray shield were prepared with eight shade composite resins and provided the codes randomly After arranging the models of teeth, 19 dentists working at the clinic of the Dentistry of Chonnam University Hospital and 65 students of college of dentistry, Chonnnam University selected the shade guides corresponding to the color of each tooth on the gray board under the D$_{65}$ standard illuminant. Bl shade showed highest accuracy of about 95% among all shade guides of 3 forms applied to the test and regardless of observer, tooth form shade guide showed the highest accuracy (p < 0.05) , and the doughnut form showed the lowest accuracy (p < 0.05). At the time of deciding on the color of the teeth using the shade guides as a result of above, the forms of the shade guides can affect the accuracy, and it suggests that the development of the diversified forms of shade guides, which may obtain more accurate results, is required.
Objectives. The purpose of this study was to compare the shade changes in wet and dry conditions of natural teeth using two different intra-oral colorimeters. Materials and methods. Twenty volunteer subjects have no restorations and fillings in the maxillary central incisors were involved in this clinical study. The color of tooth was measured by two different instruments that were a Shade $Scan^{TM}$ System and a VITA $Easyshade^{(R)}$, Five times consecutive measurements were done for each subject with both instruments. Groups of measurement are an initial wet condition as control, dry in 5 minutes, 15 seconds after re-wetting with saliva, re-wetting after 5minutes and re-wetting after 30 minutes. Using ShadeScan $System^{TM}$, tooth image was captured and converted to the mapping image of Vitapan 3D master. Three main shades were chosen from each subject and calculated the area in Global Lab Image software. Data were analyzed using paired T-Test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test. Using VITA $Easyshade^{(R)}$, color differences($\Delta$E) between measurements were analyzed with one sample T-test. Results. Using ShadeScan $System^{TM}$, there were significant differences between control group and dry(P=.023), dry and re-wetting 15 seconds, 5 minutes, 30 minutes as well(P=.021, P=.017, P=.030) in comparison of primary shade. However, comparing three main shades, there was no significant difference between control and dry(P=.105). Using VITA $Easyshade^{(R)}$, color differences($\Delta$E) between control and dry, dry and re-wetting 30 minutes were statistically different(P=.002, P=.022). Conclusion. Primary shade could be changed in dry and wetting procedure in time, however there was no significant shade changes in overall.
