  • This study aimed to compare color matching between single-shade composite resin-restored teeth with various pulp capping materials and the dentin surrounding the restoration through instrumental analysis and visual evaluation of the color difference. Fifty maxillary right central incisor acrylic resin teeth were prepared with standardized Class III cavities on the proximal surfaces. These teeth were divided into five groups: restored with single-shade composite resin only; Ultra-BlendTM plus followed by single-shade composite resin; TheraCal PTTM followed by single-shade composite resin; Endocem® MTA premixed followed by single-shade composite resin; and Well-root PTTM followed by single-shade composite resin. The color difference (ΔEab*) between the restored area and the center of the resin teeth was measured using a spectrophotometer. No significant color difference was observed in groups restored with only single-shade composite resin, Ultra-BlendTM plus, and TheraCal PTTM. The visual evaluation revealed that Ultra-BlendTM plus exhibited the best color matching score, whereas the Endocem® MTA premixed and Well-root PTTM groups showed significantly lower color matching scores than the single-shade composite resin-only group. When opting for single-shade composite resin usage for anterior tooth restorations with the aim of reducing chair time, pulp capping materials Ultra-BlendTM plus and TheraCal PTTM provide esthetically pleasing results.

  • The most scientific and reliable method for deciding the tooth color is the instrumental measurement. However, such color measuring instrument shows the difference of the measuring value according to the diversified measuring condition. This study was conducted to evaluate what effect of the labial surface irregularity of the tooth to the result of the color measured by spectrometer. 11 models of the teeth were made by injecting the A2 shade Luxatemp Automix Plus (DMG, Germany) into the impression acquired from 11 adults. Standard disk samples (15 mm diameter, 7 mm thickness) were made with same material. CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ value was measured at the incisal, central, and gingival area of the central incisor, lateral incisor, canine and first premolar using Specbos 2100 (JETI, Germany) spectrometer. Color difference was calculated between labial surface and standard samples. Among all models of the teeth, $L^*\;and\;b^*$ value showed the reducing tendency as they go toward the gingival area, but $a^*$ value showed the increasing tendency. Color difference between model teeth and standard samples showed the most difference at the incisal area, but the gingival area showed the least difference. And the canine showed the least color difference from the comparison of standard sample, and the central incisor showed the highest difference (p < 0.01). Although the visually detectable difference of the measuring value showed notably depending on the type and measured area (p < 0.05), $L^*\;and\;a^*$ value showed notable differences depending more on the measured areas than on the type of the teeth.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of external stain that long term attrition caused by tooth brushing affected the color variation of external stain of IPS e.max Press Porcelain. The specimen was made by IPS e.max Press LT ingots, and treated the shade of external staning as Orange, A, B, C, D After conducting horizontal toothbrush strokes about 11,000 / 22,000 / 44,000 / 66,000 / 88,000, Color changers of the external stained layer was measured with SpectroShade$^{tm}$ MICRO(MHT, Italy). The result of this study was obtained as follows: 1. After 11,000 strokes, the color changes of shade were greater in Orange shade than the other 4 shade groups. And even though toothbrush strokes were increased until 88,000, there were no statistical significant color changes about the external stain shade variation. 2. The amount of color variation about increasing of toothbrushing strokes was irregular(no consistent increasing, or decreasing), and it was no statistical significant changes According to these results, the long term tooth-brushing doesn't affect the changes of external stain about IPS e.max press porcelain. And it doesn't reduce the stability of external stain clinically. Later, it will be needed to study other factors affecting the external stain.

  • Color stability of pulp-capping material is considered vital to the final aesthetic result since the material is placed in the coronal area. The purpose of this study was to compare the color stability of various pulp-capping materials by analyzing color change of tooth over time. A cavity was formed in the crown of the extracted premolar, and 4 types of pulp-capping materials were filled. Color assessment was performed with a spectrophotometer at different intervals: before placement; immediately after material placement; 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks after placement. Proroot white MTA® and TheraCal LC® showed a significant decrease in the L* value and an increase in the ∆E* value over time. In contrast, Biodentine® and Well-RootTM PT showed no significant change in the L* value and maintained a steady ∆E* value. The application of pulp-capping materials containing bismuth oxide as a radiopacifier may result in a color change of teeth. Long-term color stability of pulp-capping materials should be considered when treating teeth with thin enamel thickness or in aesthetically important area.

  • We have studied the effects of dampening papers (Dampened paper, Newspaper, Korean paper, Flower sheet), silica gel (30g, 60g) and temperature ($20^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C$) on color changes of Erythronium japonicum. In the treatment of $20^{\circ}C$, color changes were low in treatments with silica gel rather than in a treatment of dampening papers. In particular, newspaper and Korean paper showed much less changes in colors by the combination treatments with 30g of silica gel. Likewise, in the treatment of $25^{\circ}C$, color changes were low in combination treatments with silica gel rather than in a alone treatment of dampening papers. For the combination treatment with 30g of silica gel, low color changes were shown in the divisions of newspaper and Korean paper, while for the combination treatment with 60g of silica gel, low color changes were shown in the those of Korean paper and dampened paper.
