  • The Korean-made passive samplers were evaluated at the working environment for field testing. Tested materials were n-hexane, toluene and trichloroethylene. The performance of passive samplers depended on types and concentrations of organic vapors. Sampling rates were not steady until certain concentrations. The optimum concentration for determination of airborne toluene by passive samplers was equal to or over 10 ppm which is 1/10 of the Korean occupational exposure limit. Optimum concentration of n-hexane was equal to and over 1 ppm which is 1/50 of Korean occupational exposure limit. But for trichloroehtylene, coefficient of variation was 53.5 %. Passive samplers may be used for determination of n-hexane. For other materials, further study on the performance of Korean-made passive samplers is required.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate desorption efficiency and storage stability on activated carbon acquired form domestic market. Materials: Mixture of acetone, benzene, normal hexane and toluene was injected on four types of charcoal 100 mg. After overnight, charcoal was desorbed by carbon disulfide $1m{\ell}$ and analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector. Results: Desorption efficiency of benzene, normal hexane and toluene in charcoal tubes were 95% ~ 105%. But desorption efficiency of acetone in charcoal tubes was below 75% and different from types of charcoal. The more injected amount of acetone on charcoal showed higher desorption efficiency. Acetone injected on charcoal tubes migrated from front section into back section after 10 days storage at room temperature. Conclusions: Desorption efficiency and storage stability of activated carbon acquired from domestic market was good for benzene, normal hexane and toluene. The activated carbon acquired from domestic market has ability to be used as sampling media.

  • Korean diffusive sampler (KDS) and charcoal tube (CT) were used for sampling n-hexane, trichloroethylene and toluene in air KDS was made by Department of Environmental Health, SNU-SPH in 1995. Surveys were conducted at ten industrial plants with organic solvents. The relationship between two sampling methods was examined by linear regression analysis, and concentrations by two sampling methods were compared using paired t-test. The results are as follows: 1. The geometric means by CT and KDS methods were 3.26ppm and 3.32ppm for n-hexane, 5.07ppm and 6.34ppm for toluene, and 7.18ppm and 7.90ppm for toluene, respectively. There was no significant difference between results by CT and KDS methods in three organic vapors (p>0.05). When linear regression analysis was performed, two sampling methods were highly related ; correlation coefficients were 0.98, 0.90 and 0.96 for n-hexane, toluene and trichloroethylene, respectively. 2. Airborne concentrations of n-hexane (n=21) were below 0.5 TLV level. The GM by two methods were almost same (3.09 ppm). And there was no significant difference between results by two methods (p>0.05). 3. Since toluene and trichloroethylene concentrations showed several levels, appropriate sampling rates were applied for each level. The GM of toluene concentrations by two methods at 0.5 TLV level were 3.75ppm and 5.48ppm. The KDS method overestimated the toluene concentrations at 0.5 TLV level (p<0.05). The GM values of toluene concentrations at 1 TLV level were 31.80ppm and 25.38ppm and at 2 TLV level were 64.13 ppm and 51.37 ppm. The KDS method underestimated concentration at both level (p<0.05). For trichloroethylene, the GM at 0.5 TLV level were 4.97 ppm and 7.11ppm. The KDS method overestimated the concentration of trichloroethylene (p<0.05). In conclusion, concentrations of three organic vapors measured by CT and KDS were not significantly different and results by two methods were highly related. But at contain concentrations, the levels by method were significantly different. Therefore, it is suggested that sampling rate of KDS should be studied simultaneously using CT method for organic vapors.

  • PU/PDMS(Poly urethane/poly(dimethylsiloxane ) membranes were prepared to enhance chemical resistance over VOCs from 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDHS). Swelling characteristics and vapor permeation performance of toluene, 1,2-dichloroethane, hexane through PU/PDMS membrane with various feed VOCs concentration were investigated. Swelling ratio of VOCs showed tendency of Toluene > 1,2-dichloroethane > hexane. Fiux of toluene and 1,2-dichloroethane increased with increasing fled concentration while the flux of hexane maintained with increasing feed. VOCs concentration in permeate maintained 50 wt% oi concentration due to high affinity of PU/PDHS membranes to VOCs.

  • In this study, soxhlet extraction and dissolution-precipitation method are used for separating analyte from polymer materials. In soxhlet extraction efficiency test, it has been found that the DCM, Toluene, THF, and mixtures Acetone/Hexane (1:4, v/v) gave good extraction efficiency, while the use of the ethyl ether, acetone/ethyl ether (1:4, v/v), acetone/hexane (1:1, v/v), DCM/hexane (1:1, v/v) resulted in significantly lower values. In case of dissolution-precipitation method, there is no considerable difference with used different dissolving solvent. The elution amount of multi layer silica and Florisil column were determined with hexane 250 mL and 70 mL of hexane, respectively. Range of PBDE in real waste plastics was N.D.~1,028 ppm.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed on the seawater from 17 stations in Kwangyang Bay throughtout the year. We could not detect 10 VOCs; methylene chloride, tetrachloromethane, 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, trichloroethane, 1, 1, 1, 2-tetrachloroethane, trichloroethylene, bromoethane, dibromoethane, bromobenzene, 1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene. The other VOCs-chloroform, 1, 2-dichloroethane, ethylbenzene, benzene, toluene, m, p-xylene, methylethylketone, styrene, hexane-were detected with a little variance according to the sampling stations and the sampling seasons. The concentrations of chloroform (0.6 ~ 49.9 $\mu$g/1) and toluene (0.42 ~ 48.3 $\mu$g/1) were high and they were detected more frequently than the other detected VOCs. We also tried to seek the correlation between the physicochemical environmental factors and VOCs. Only toluene had the high correlation coefficient with the water temperature (r = -0.524) and with the pH (r = 0.319). Correlation between VOCs themselves showed some interesting results. The benzene had high correlation coefficient (r = 0.549 ~ 0.662) with three VOCs such as toluene, m, p-xylene, ethylbenzene. From these results it is suggested that VOCs might be discharged simultaneously in Kwangyang Bay.

  • The isolated bacterial strain 1K1 able to grow on extremely high concentration of toluene was morphologically and physiologically best described as Pseudomonas putida. This strain could grow on at least eight aromatic compounds, e.g., benzene, benzoate, phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol, toluene, m-tolunte, and xylene, but did not Brow on alkanes, such as hexane, octane, decane, and cyclohexane. Strain 1K1 could grow on above 95% toluene, but it could not grow on above 1% of other aromatic compounds. In the point of survival, strain 1K1 was resistant to high concentration of alkanes, appreciably resistant to toluene and xylene, and damaged by to other aromatic compounds. Strain 1K1 which grew on high concentration of toluene had irregular cell shape in comparing with normal cell shape of the genus Pseudomonas. Strain 1K1 was shown to have at least two aromatic compound dissimilation pathway, one for benzoate and the other for toluene.

  • Propolis, a natural resinous compound collected from honey bees, contains many biochemical constituents and has been used in traditional medicines as early as 300 B.C. Recently, it has been reported to possess many biological activities such as antibacterial, antiviral, fungicidal, local anaesthetic, immunostimulating, antiinflammatory and free radical scavenging properties. This study was performed to investigate the pharmacological effects of the propolis extract and fractions on the gastric lesion and ulcer. The ethanol extract was fractionated with hexane, toluene and ethyl acetate. Followed by bioassay on antigastric and antiulcer activity. Propolis ethanol extracts(500, 750, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 mg/kg) showed the protective effect on HCl·ethanol-induced gastric lesion and the antisecretory effect against Shay’s gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats in a dose related manner. In the animal models of HCl·ethanol, aspirin-induced gastric lesion and Shay’s gastric secretion, the hexane and toluene fraction of propolis significantly reduced the length of gastric lesion and the acid secretion. These data showed that the gastric protective effects of propolis might result from reduction of acid secretion through the inactivation of H+/K+ATPase activity.
