Determinants of Retail Banking Efficiency: A Case of Vietcombank Branches in the Mekong-Delta Region

  • This study focused on researching the factors affecting retail banking efficiency of Vietcombank branches in the Mekong-Delta region. By collecting data from financial statements from 15 branches of VCB in the Mekong-Delta Region between 2015 and 2018, the paper applies DEA estimation to measure the effectiveness of retail banking activities and uses the Tobit regression model to identify factors affecting retail banking efficiency. The results demonstrate that the retail banking efficiency of branches averaged 52.5% during the period. The rating result shows the branches in An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Kien Giang, Long An, Phu Quoc and Tra Noc rank at the top technical efficiency. In group of medium efficiency, there are branches in Soc Trang, Tien Giang and Vinh Long. In the category of the poor efficiency are the branches in Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca Mau, Chau Doc and Tra Vinh. The results also show that bank scale-related factors, capital adequacy, credit quality, time specific and region impact significantly the retail banking efficiency. The research not, only contributes to enriching the empirical research method but also is significant for the management activities in business developing strategies, improving the operational efficiency of Vietcombank in the region.

대학교 급식 소비자들의 닭고기 소비행태에 관한 연구 : 식품안전인증(HACCP)과 친환경인증 비교를 중심으로 (An Analysis on Consumers' Behavior of Chicken Meat at the Cafeterias of University: Focusing on Comparison between Food Safety Certified Chicken Meat and Environment-friendly Chicken Meat)

  • Even though consumers' concern about food-safety certified or environment-friendly chicken meat becomes one of the main issues of food consumption in Korea, university students' interest about food-safety certified or environment-friendly chicken meat was not often discussed. We realized that the cafeteria of university is one of the largest consumption points for the chicken meat of university students, and tried to analyze university students' consumption of food-safety certified or environment-friendly chicken meat at the cafeterias of university. The object of this paper is to conduct survey analysis about the students' behavior for consumption of food-safety certified or environment-friendly chicken meat at the cafeterias of university and to measure WTP(Willingness-to-pay) for the food cooked with food-safety certified or environment-friendly chicken meat. The results present that most of students show higher preference of environment-friendly chicken meat than food-safety certified chicken meat, and that they can pay 1,329.9 Korean won for food cooked with environment-friendly chicken meat.

The External Knowledge Utilization and Radical Innovation in Korea Electronic Industry

  • Purpose - This study investigates the moderation effect of internal factor, a firms size, on the external knowledge sourcing strategy and its effectiveness in generating radical innovation. We incorporate concepts of breadth and depth as two measures to gauge the degree of openness in firms external search Research design and methodology - The dependent variable in the regression model is the percentage of innovative sales and therefore, Tobit regression is employed for estimating significant factors affecting on the ratio of first-to-market by breadth and depth in external knowledge, internationalization, and size. Results - The results show that the external knowledge, in terms of both breadth and depth, has a positive relationship with radical innovation. However internationalization as external knowledge resources is not statistically accepted. Firm size has moderating effect on innovation negatively only in case of using external knowledge resources to a high degree. Conclusions - Firms obtain external information mostly from customers, competitors, and suppliers etc. empirical knowledge in terms of scope and intensity is an important contributor to innovation. And intensity use of external knowledge and information resources can work in favor of smaller firms rather than larger ones. Internationalization seems to have little effect on innovation but it requires further researches with clear criteria and more data.

대학교 급식 식당의 닭고기 메뉴 소비 실태 분석 (An Analysis on Students' Behavior for Consumption of Chicken Meat at the Cafeterias of University)

  • 대학교 급식 식당은 대학생들의 닭고기 소비의 주요 장소임에도 불구하고 이에 대한 연구가 적었다. 본 연구에서는 대학교 급식 식당에서의 닭고기 사용 실태를 분석하고 소비확대 방안을 모색하기 위해, 주 소비자인 대학생들을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하고 결과를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 응답자의 79%가 닭고기를 좋아하는 것으로 나타났고, 수입산 닭고기 대신 국산 닭고기를 사용한 메뉴에 대해 4,426원을 지불할 의향이 있는 것으로 측정되어 기준 값인 3,000원에 비해 1,426원을 더 지불할 것으로 분석되었다. 이상의 결과를 통해 대학교 급식 식당에서의 국산 닭고기 소비 확대를 위해서는 일부 원가 상승으로 인한 가격 인상을 감수하더라도 맛 등의 품질을 높이고, 대학생들이 선호하는 메뉴를 개발할 필요가 있는 것으로 판단된다.

전주지역 자활 관련 조직들의 네트워크 구조에 관한 연구 (Interorganizational Networks of the Self-supporting Service Organizations in Chonju Area)

  • This study analyse interorganizational networks of the self-supporting service organizations using data on the 31 organizations in Chanju area. Interorganizational networks are operationalized in two ways: conference network and referral network. First, this study attempt to examine the characteristics of interorganizational networks of the self-supporting service organizations. Using block model, I can capture some of the structural features of interorganizational networks. Major findings of block modeling are as follows: (1) Public organizations are more inactive to make a connect with other organizations. (2) Most of organizations incline to make a connect with same kind organizations. Namely, employment service organizations incline to flock together, and social welfare organizations are also much the same. Second, this study attempt to examine the determinants of interorganizational networks of the self-supporting service organizations. Relations between pairs of organizations are modeled as a function of dyadic level covariates in accordance with resource dependence, transaction cost, and organizational domain theory. Measure of informal ties between organizations are also included as covariates. Applying logit and tobit regression methods, this study reveals that most variables have effects on the dyadic relations of organizations. Through this empirical analysis, I can suggest policy implications for the self-supporting programs in Korea.

우리나라 서비스부문의 혁신효율성 분석에 관한 연구 (A Study on Analyzing Innovation Efficiency in Service Sector of Korea)

  • One of primary assumptions on DEA is that all DMUs for evaluation should be homogeneous. In comparative analysis among DMUs with relative efficiency measurement, it should be evaluated under identical conditions by ruling out external environmental influences. In this study, a measurement of innovation efficiency using the three-stage approach is performed. The approach employs DEA to measure relative efficiency and Tobit regressions to control external variables affecting innovation activity. The approach applied to firms in Korean Innovation Survey: Service Sector 2003 and 2006. Final efficiency scores of the approach represent net efficiency of the innovation. This study found that there is a increasing on technical efficiency of third stage, and it has difference with first stage significantly. Besides, a decrease on standard deviation of third stage is found. It means DMUs biased lower due to unfavorable condition and ones biased higher due to favorable condition are fallen into an identical operating environment through the approach. A measurement of net efficiency, excluding external effects, ensures the homogeneity of DMUs so that improves the reliability in terms of its analysis results. This study is expected to provide a direction and to be a valuable reference to further evaluation of innovation performance in Korean service sector.

미국 편모가계의 자녀보육비 지출에 영향을 미치는 요인 (Factors that Influence on Child Care Expenses of Single Mother Families in the U. S.)

  • Using the 1999 National Survey of America's Families(NSAF), this study investigated the factors that affect child care expenses and examined financial and social support of single mother families in the U. S. In this study, 4,676 single mother families with children aged twelve and under are included for the analytical sample. About half of all single mother families with children under age 12 had some amount of child care expenses in 1999. Monthly child care expenses for those who had child care expenses was an average of $255 and it accounted for about 15 percent of their family earnings. The profile of financial and social support showed that about one-quarter of single mothers received financial support for child care, one-fifth received free child care by relatives and about 40 percent received child support payments from nonresident fathers. Tobit analysis results showed that the significant factors that affected child care expenses were mother's age, marital status, educational level, employment status, the numbers of children aged 0-5, family income, the receipt of public assistance and financial support for child care.

부모의 양육유형이 사교육비지출과 자녀의 학업성적에 미치는 영향: 사교육비지출의 매개효과를 중심으로 (The Effect of Parenting Styles on Private Educational Expenditure and Academic Performance of Children: Focusing on Mediation Effect of Private Educational Expenditure)

  • Using a sample of third grade middle school students from the forth wave of Children and Youth Panel Survey in 2012, the mediation effects of private educational expenditure between parenting styles and children's academic performance were investigated by applying factor, cluster, tobit, and two stage regression analysis. The major results were as follows. First, four types of parenting style were identified. The most frequent parenting style was ambivalent parenting (tiger parenting) which was followed by authoritative parenting. Second, compared to permissive parenting style, ambivalent, authoritative, and authoritarian parenting styles were significantly associated with more private educational expenditures. Third, more private educational expenditures were significantly associated with higher academic performance of children. I found both a full mediation effect of private educational expenditure for ambivalent and authoritarian parenting styles, and a partial mediation effect for authoritative parents. Authoritative parenting style has a negative moderating effect on the relationship between household income and private educational expenditure, along with a positive direct effect on the academic performance of children. The results suggested that an authoritative parenting style was related with higher academic performance of children with less private educational expenditures compared to other parenting styles. The results also implied that the public policies to enhance authoritative parenting style among parents would be effective to reduce household's private educational expenditures.

DEA를 이용한 보건의료기술 R&D 사업의 효율성 분석과 전략적 포트폴리오 모형 : 중개연구를 중심으로 (Efficiency Analysis and Strategic Portfolio Model of National Health Technology R&D Program Using DEA : Focused on Translational Research)

  • This paper measures and compares the efficiency of national health technology R&D programs focused on translational research program increasing importance using data envelopment analysis (DEA). Three input variables and three output variables are selected for DEA. Inputs are funds, researchers, and project period and outputs are SCI (E) papers, applied and granted patents, and impact factor. This study uses a three-stage approach. In the first stage, output-based DEA model is applied to evaluate the efficiency of decision making unit (DMU). In the second stage, based on efficiency scores of target diseases high-efficiency group and low-efficiency group are classified. And then strategic portfolio matrix of translational research program is composed of four dimensions combining research types. Mann-Whitney U test is then run to compare average efficiency scores among four groups. In the final stage, Tobit regression model is used to estimate factors likely to influence the efficiency. The results are expected to provide policy implications for effectively establishing investment strategy and managing performance of R&D program.

Expatriate CEOs and Local CSR Strategy: Evidence from Foreign Subsidiaries of MNCs in Korea

  • Purpose - This study empirically investigates the relationship between expatriate CEOs of multinational corporation (MNC) foreign subsidiaries and local philanthropy. Since corporate social responsibility (CSR) enables MNCs to achieve local legitimacy, this research argues that local philanthropy is a valuable strategic means for expatriate CEOs of foreign subsidiaries to secure local legitimacy. Design/methodology - To investigate our argument, we use a sample of 5,459 observations from 576 foreign subsidiaries of MNCs in Korea between 2002 and 2016. We conduct a random-effects panel Tobit regression with subsidiary CEO having foreign nationality as the independent variable and local philanthropy as the dependent variable. Findings - Our main findings are that expatriate CEOs of foreign subsidiaries are more actively engaged in local philanthropy. In addition, the positive relationship between expatriate CEOs and local philanthropy is weaker as their tenure increases. Originality/value - How expatriate CEOs overcome their weak local legitimacy as foreigners in a host country has remained unclear because existing studies mainly focused on the control and coordination aspects of staffing expatriates in CEO positions of foreign subsidiaries. This study broadens the literature on subsidiary CEO staffing and CSR activities of MNCs by identifying complementary relationships between expatriate CEOs and corporate philanthropy in the host country.
