  • For evaluating the cigarette smoke quality of nonblended and commercial cigarettes, four modified smoke quality indexes were deduced from considering the reactivity of the thiol group in cystine (SH value) with the cigarette smoke constituents, and from the maximum limited contents of tar. nicotine, and carbon monoxide for the less harmful cigarettes. These results were discussed with respect to correlation coefficients between the indexes and tar/nicotine ratio which had been known reliable for smoke quality evaluation. Among the three indexes, the SH/[(N/O.6) +($\frac{C+T}{8}$)] index was found to be the most reliable and applicable.

  • Tobacco diseases have not been recorded until 1900s in Korea, where tobacco plants were introduced at early 1700s. Practical researches on the disease have been conducted since mid 1960s. Major ten tobacco diseases were mosaic caused by tobacco mosaic virus·potato virus Y·cucumber mosaic virus, bacterial wilt, hollow stalk, wild fire caused by angular leaf spot strain, black shank, brown spot, powdery mildew and fusarium wilt. But their annual occurrences were varied according to changes of tobacco varieties and their cultivating practices. As no useful chemicals, several biological tactics have been developed to control the viral or bacterial diseases that give significant economic damages on sustainable crop yield, but not practicable to field farming condition yet. Transgenic tobacco plants containing foreign disease resistant genes have been developed by current bio-technology, but not released to farmers yet. Though some disease-resistant tobacco varieties have been developed by the conventional breeding technology and currently used by farmers, their disease controlling efficacy have been diminished by occurrence of the new strain or race. Future research on tobacco diseases has been focused on technical development to produce high quality tobacco with less production cost, which leads Korean tobacco industry to keep its competence against foreign industry and decreasing overall market.

  • The goal of refining is to treat fibers so they meet the requirements of the papermaking process. The refining process in papermaking has great influence on the quality of the final product by changing the fiber properties, such as fiber length, shape, fine contents and so on. In this study, the effect on the morphological change of fibers by the refining conditions were investigated using the fiber morphology analyzer. Fiber morphology analyzer used to determine which pulps are suitable for producing particular products. Furthermore it is widely used in paper mills to monitor paper quality. The morphological change of fibers according to refining conditions were evaluated out by measuring fiber, shive and fine. In the fiber morphology, the domestic reconstituted tobacco fiber has the bigger average fiber length value than that of the foreign reconstituted tobacco.

  • This study was implemented to examine the effect of tobacco on operation of a retail store and propose a relevant direction to development of a retail store. In terms of an examination method, the questionnaire was conducted in respect of supermarkets and convenience stores(CVS) around the nation. As a result of analysis based on such questionnaire, although there was a little difference in between a supermarket and a convenience store, a similar result could be found in general. In other words, retailers selling tobacco regarded the tobacco as a medium to solicit customers. Since the significance of tobacco in terms of total sales volume was so high, without the tobacco, they might have suspend the business. Consequently, the effect of tobacco was enormous. In addition, under the premise that many regular customers should be acquired to develop such retail stores, it was found that it would be necessary to increase $15{\sim}20%$ in terms of a margin in tobacco, preserve the profit ratio by the government, make efforts to enhance a quality and design by a tobacco company, actively recommend a particular brand, and actively display a tobacco publicity booklet, etc. Moreover, the proper number of tobacco stores in comparison with habitual smokers was one per 200 persons. In respect of the most unreasonable tobacco policy, a minor-related system and a policy of increasing a tobacco price were named. Thus, under the premise that a medium such as tobacco is highly important with respect to an operation of retail store, it is necessary to pay a more careful attention to an improvement of a reasonable and equitable system to further develop a retail store.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tobacco curing on far infrared light on the quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves. Physicochemical characteristics such as alkaloid, total sugar, total nitrogen, starch, total phenolic compounds, browning degrees, and color differences, in cured tobacco leaves were compared between hot air and far infrared curing methods. There was no significant difference in sugar/nicotine ratio and nitrogen number between the curing methods, while the contents of ether extract and filling capacity were increase by far infrared curing. Therefore, it was expected that far infrared curing might be effective for high aroma and physical properties of the cured tobacco leaves.

  • Lines were developed from the two crosses, BY4 X NC 82 and BY 4 X BY 104, by bulk, backcross and anther-derived dihaploid methods of breeding , and their variations in major agronomic, chemical characters, heritability, and response to selection were compared. 1. The anther-derived dihaploid lines showed a greater genetic variability and heritability in characters investigated than the lines developed by the other two methods of breeding . However, those were Inferior In agronomic characters and yielded 15.4% less leaf tobacco than the lines developed by the bulk method. 2. The lines developed by bulk method were higher In the frequency of lines resistant to bacterial wilt and in the yield, but Its lines appeared later flowering. inferior leaf Quality, and higher total nitrogen contents than those developed by the backcross method of breeding. 3. In the population of the lines developed by the backcross method, bacterial wilt resistant lines were less frequent, but the lines with a good leaf quality were more frequent.

  • A personal computer based color machine vision system with video camera and fluorescent lighting system was used to generate images of stationary tobacco leaves. Image processing algorithms were developed to extract both the geometric and the color features of tobacco leaves. Geometric features include area, perimeter, centroid, roundness and complex ratio. Color calibration scheme was developed to convert measured pixel values to the standard color unit using both statistics and artificial neural network algorithm. Improved back propagation algorithm showed less sum of square errors than multiple linear regression. Color features provide not only quality evaluation quantities but the accurate color measurement. Those quality features would be useful in grading tobacco automatically. This system would also be useful in measuring visual features of other agricultural products.

  • This study was carried out to develop a new stalk curing of the horizontal hanging method that would reduce the harvesting and curing labor, and improve its quality of cured leaf than the conventional stalk curing method in burley tobacco. The horizontal hanging stalk-curing method designed from 1988 was compared with the conventional method. The horizontal method shortened the curing Period for 7 days and reduced to 0.3%, while it occurred 9.4% in the vertical method. In the horizontal method, the quality of cured leaf improved 9%, but the contents of chemical components and physical properties were similar to those of vertical method. The labor of stalk-cut and loading in curing facility reduced 28% by the horizontal method. In harvesting and curing process, the horizontal method resulted 12% of labor saving as compared with the vertical method. Key words : horizontal hanging stalk-curing method, vertical method, stalk-curing.
