Factors Associated with Tobacco Use in Students Attending Local Government Schools in Mumbai, India

  • Purpose: Factors associated with ever-use and differences between ever-users and non-users of tobacco among adolescent school students from low income families in Mumbai were assessed. Materials and Methods: A self-administered questionnaire, completed by 1918 students from grades 7, 8 and 9 in 12 schools managed by the city municipal corporation in July 2015, gathered data on socio-demographic characteristics, tobacco use and tobacco-related knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Results: Although only 1% of respondents thought tobacco was cool, nearly 35% were unaware of associations between tobacco use and health problems. Male students were almost twice as likely (OR=2.5, P <= 0.05) to have ever used tobacco compared to females and Supari (areca nut) users were eight times more likely (OR=8.99, P < 0.001) than Supari non -users. Tobacco-users were more likely to agree with statements: 'People who use tobacco have more friends' (OR=2.8, P = 0.004), 'Smoking relieves stress' (OR=5.6, P = 0.002) and 'It is possible to purchase any tobacco product within 100 yards of school' (OR=10.8, P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study highlights the gains made by tobacco prevention campaigns in that almost all students did not consider tobacco as cool or a stress reliever. However, they still need education about health consequences of tobacco-use. In addition, Supari use has to be addressed in school-based tobacco prevention and cessation initiatives. Furthermore, programs must also address perceptions and norms related to peers and tobacco use and ensure active implementation of existing laws. Such integrated measures will help ensure tobacco-free spaces around schools.

Utilization of Tobacco Sucker Control Agents in China

  • Using sucker agents for tobacco can lead some advantages including saving labor, increasing yield and reducing the spread of diseases. At present, the sucker control agents used in China mainly depended on importing. The agents includes two groups, systemics (Maleic hydrazide: MH, etc) and partial systemics (Butralin, Flumetralin, Pendimethalin, etc). Now, Pendimethalin(a.i. 33%, wp) was used extensively all over the tobacco field in China. Sucker control agents will also be used for tobacco production in China. Because of the high price of the imported agents, China has studied on the domestic production of tobacco sucker control agents and has made some progresses.

  • 담배가격은 담배소비를 조정하여 간접적으로 국민건강에 영향을 준다 이를 총계소비함수와 도시가계자료를 활용한 수요체계의 추정을 통하여 실증적으로 확인한 결과 담배가격의 수요탄력성은 국민일인당의 경우 -0.19, 18세이상 일인당의 경우 -0.176이다. 또 담배가격과 보건의료지출과의 교차가격 탄력성은 -0.2328로 추정되었다. 담배소비는 담배가격에 통계적으로 매우 유의하게 반응하여서 가격조절을 통한 소비억제정책이 효과적으로 작용할 수있음이 확인 되었고 담배가격인상이 국민건강을 증진시킨다는 주장의 실증적 근거가 확인되었다

담배업계의 퍼블리시티 전략 연구: 담배회사 내부문건과 언론보도를 중심으로 (A Study on the Tobacco Industry's Publicity Strategies: Based on the Analysis of Tobacco Company's Documents and the Media Coverage of Tobacco and Tobacco Companies)

  • 본 연구에서는 담배업계가 언론을 통해 담배 및 담배회사를 마케팅하기 위해 어떤 전략을 취해왔는지를 점검하기 위해 담배회사 내부문건을 분석한 일련의 연구들과 담배 및 흡연에 대한 언론보도를 분석한 국내외 문헌들을 점검하였다. 먼저 담배업계 내부 문건을 분석한 연구들을 점검한 결과, 담배회사는 언론을 통해 담배 및 흡연에 우호적인 언론보도를 확보하기 위해, 광고 및 다양한 형태의 협찬을 통해 언론사를 지원함으로써 언론사와 긴밀한 관계를 형성해 왔으며, 언론인을 후원을 하거나 미래 언론인을 양성하는 프로그램을 지원하는 등 언론인과의 유대관계를 형성하는 전략도 취해왔다. 또한, 씽크탱크 집단과 흡연옹호집단을 프론트 그룹으로 내세워 이들이 언론을 통해 담배업계의 입장과 관점을 지지하고 대변하도록 지원해왔으며, 예술 및 문화 활동 후원을 담배회사를 언론에 노출시키기 위한 의사사건으로 활용해왔다. 그리고, 담배 및 흡연에 대한 언론보도에 대한 문헌들을 점검한 결과, 담배 및 흡연 보도에 있어서 언론의 미온적 태도를 볼 수 있었으며, 흡연은 지양해야 하는 것이 아니라 갈등의 여지가 있는 이슈라는 담배업계의 주장과 메시지가 자연스럽게 전달되는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 더불어, 친자본성향 언론과의 우호적인 관계, 씽크탱크 집단 및 프론트 그룹의 활용, 사회공헌활동의 의사사건으로 활용 등 담배회사 내부문건에서 발견되었던 담배업계의 전략이 언론보도에도 반영되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 담배업계가 담배 및 흡연에 대한 긍정적인 이미지와 호의적인 여론을 형성하기 위해 언론에 어떻게 접근하고, 활용하고 있는지를 제시해줌으로써 담배회사 퍼블리시티 활동에 대한 규제의 근거를 제공해 준다.

궐련벌레의 원료 잎담배 식이 선호성에 관한 연구 (The Feeding Preference of Cigarette Beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F., on Cured Tobacco Leaves.)

  • Feeding preference of cigarette beetle, Lasioderma sewicorne F., on cured tobacco leaves was investigated to obtain basic information on ecological management of the insect pest in tobacco storage warehouses. About 3, 000-4, 000 adults of the insect were released in a warehouse in which groud tobacco leaves were placed on the bottom and at 3m above the floor level, and numbers of insects attracted were examined. There was no significant difference on feeding preference between the two tobacco varieties, flue-cured(NC82) and air-cured(Br3l) tobacco leaves. However, significant differences were noted in feeding preference between thick and thin leaves and among different quality grades within a tobacco variety. Feeding preferences of cigarette beetle between flue- and air- cured tobacco varieties showed significant differences on the lower position, though there were no differences on the 3m upper position. On the 3m upper position, feeding preferences were different between thick and thin leaves of tobacco varieties, and variety X thickness and variety X thickness equality grades showed statistically significant differences. Significantly higher feeding preference by cigarette beetle adults was observed for the food placed on the 3m upper than on the lower position. There were negative correlations between quality grades of cured tobacco leaves and feeding preference on the lower position, and the regression equation was Y(feeding preference)=4.050-0.683 X (degree).

Predictors of Tobacco-Control Activities of Community Health Practitioners: Report from a National Survey

  • The involvement of health-care professionals in tobacco-control activities is essential to prevent smoking-related morbidity and mortality. The purposes of this predictive correlational study were to examine tobacco-control activities and to identify the predictors of such activities of community health practitioners (CHPs). Of the 1,813 members of the Korean Association of CHP, 1,247 participated in this study. A mailed survey was conducted to collect data. The majority of CHPs supported tobacco-control policies and recognized tobacco-control activities as an important role for them. Only $44.3\%$ of CHPs were confident in their knowledge and skills regarding tobacco-control activities, and only $30.8\%$ had received professional tobacco-control education. While the majority of the CHPs 'asked, advised, and assessed' their clients, only a small number 'assisted or arranged'. The tobacco-control activities of CHPs were predicted by their attitude toward it, age, experience of tobacco-control education, educational level, and general perception of the risk of smoking; these variables accounted $13.5\%$ of variance in the tobacco-control activities of CHPs. These findings provide the basis for developing a continuing education program for CHPs. CHPs should be encouraged to integrate tobacco-control activities into their routine practice, and CHP education programs should be adjusted to increase the time spent on the tobacco-control intervention techniques.

Scopoletin Production Related to Induced Resistance of Tobacco Plants Against Tobacco mosaic virus

  • A fluorescent material was accumulated in inoculated leaves showing necrotic local lesions of tobacco plants with N gene, Nicotiana tabacum cvs. Xanthi-nc NN, Samsun NN, Burley 21 and KF 114, and N. glutinosa, and Datura stramonium at the early growth stages by the inoculation of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). It was identified as a coumarin phytoalexin, scopoletin. Although the material was most prominently produced in TMV-inoculated tobacco leaves with local necrotic lesions, its accumulation was also noted in uninoculated leaves of TMV-inoculated plants. Its accumulation was somewhat greater in high resistance-induced leaves than low resistance-induced and intact leaves. Scopoletin treatment induced the expression of a pathogenesis-related protein, PR-1, prominently at the concentration of 500 or 1000 ${\mu}$g/ml. This suggests that scopoletin is a phytoalexin abundantly accumulating in N gene-containing resistant plants in response to TMV infection, and may be related to hypersensitive responses (HR) and systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in the resistant tobacco plants.

  • The significance of soil and/or rhisosphere populations of Erwinia carotovora sobsp. carotovora (Ecc) as a source of primary inoculum for tobacco hollow stalk disease has been demonstrated conclusively. The survival of Ecc in field soils fter overwintering was estimated by using the enrichment technique. The population number of pectolytic erwinia (PE) in field soils relatively decreased at the rate of 102-104 colony forming unit(CFU) per g of soil after overwintering. Higher level of PE population overwintered in the rhlzosphere foils of tobacco stubbles and detected more frequently in rhizosphere soils of weed plants than in those of bare fields. All of the tobacco stubbles collected from fields where tobacco had been grown the previous year contained Ecc. The more survived population number of PE at the 30cm depth of artifitiany infested soils than at the upper of those by introducing with diseased tobacco plant tissue after overwintering. Ecc overwintered effectively in rhizosphere soils of tobacco stubbles, overwintered weeds and tobacco debris in field soils.

$CO_2$를 이용하여 팽화된 각초배합율이 제조담배 물성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Dry Ice Expanded Tobacco Blending Ratio on the Physical Properties of Cigarettes)

  • The experiment was carried out to study the effect of dry ice expanded tobacco (DIET) blending ratio on the physical properties of cigarettes. Vnencapsulated pressure drop (UPD) of the cigarette decreased from 85 mmWG to 78 mWG when the DIET blending ratio increased from 0% to 60%, but it increased in the range of over 60% blending ratio. But the overall UPD/EPD ratio of these cigarettes showed a decreasing tendency. Cigarette ventilation rate increased from 55% to 66% with the increased blending ratio of expanded tobacco and loose ends also showed the same tendency. The higher the blending ratio of expanded tobacco, the faster became the static burning time from 7' 34" to 5' 02". However, the cigarette hardness was almost not affected by the blending ratio.ing ratio.
